ODESSA--Jason Randall Bushong was born October 26, 1987 in Odessa, Texas. He joined Jesus and others he loved on May 8, 2011.

Jason graduated from Levelland High School with honors in 2006 where he played varsity basketball and golf. He attended Frank Phillips College on a golf scholarship, and worked as an Independent Petroleum Landman for the past two years.

Jason was a member of Ranchland Heights Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was active with the youth group. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jim Bushong, and maternal grandparents Don and Fay Allison.

Known as a caring and compassionate person, Jason was a kind soul who never met a stranger. He was a "gentle giant" with a sweet spirit who hugged freely and loved deeply. A loyal friend to many and a dependable caregiver to his family, Jason was a "rock" in times of need and was always willing to help. His smile could light up the room, while his wit and humor brought laughter to many.

He loved the Lord, his family (especially his niece Mallary), his friends whom he considered his family, and his dog Daisy. His happiest times were spent with his love Kaleigh, playing basketball and golf, coaching Little Dribblers Basketball, helping the youth at church and church camp, working on cars and stereos, and spending time with friends. Jason's ministry, testimony, and memory will live on, as he lives in our hearts forever.

Jason is survived by his father, Randy Bushong; mother, Kitrena Bushong; sister, Renee Pettigrew and husband, Shae; niece, Mallary; and grandmother, Shirley Bushong; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; and a multitude of friends.

The family will receive friends at Acres West Funeral Home on Friday, May 13, 2011, from 6p.m. to 8p.m. A memorial service to honor Jason's life will be on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 10a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 8644 Andrews Highway, Odessa, Texas, with Pastor Gary Douglas officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and online condolences may be sent at acreswestfuneral.com.

Man dies; was charged in friend's 2008 traffic death

An Odessa man charged in the traffic death of his friend is dead of what
investigators have initially determined to be a self-inflicted head injury.

Jason Randall Bushong was 23.

According to the Odessa police incident report, Bushong was transported
from his residence in the 1500 block of East 52nd Street to Medical Center
Hospital after a call came in at 12:55 p.m. Forensic death investigator
Sondra Woolf said Bushong was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 1:35 p.m.
and his body has been sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy. The incident
report, however, stated Bushong was found already dead in his residence.

Bushong had been facing an intoxication manslaughter charge in connection
with a Nov. 17, 2008, accident that killed a Permian High School senior
near Del Rio.

In an earlier Odessa American article, Department of Public Safety Trooper
Ramiro Nava said Bushong, then 21, was heading east on U.S. Highway 90
early Nov. 17 when the trooper saw Bushong’s pickup swerving. The pickup
struck a guardrail, rolled over and landed on its passenger side.

Nava said that then 17-year-old Kaleigh Renee Dunn was thrown out of the
truck and pinned underneath it, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bushong was arrested and jailed before being released quickly on a $100,000
bond.

Dunn and Bushong were described as close friends in previous interviews
with people who knew them.

A representative with the Val Verde County District Clerk’s office said
Bushong’s last hearing date was set Oct. 1, 2010, but a motion Sept. 30
continued it and there had been no hearings since.

Calls to the Val Verde County’s District Attorney’s office were not
returned Monday.

Dunn was the granddaughter of Odessans Merle and Brenda Dunn. The couple
became guardians of Kaleigh after the girl’s father died.

Merle Dunn is a former Ector County deputy and a former longtime ECISD
employee. Merle Dunn taught at Odessa High School and was also involved in
student-support services. Odessa American news archives identify Merle Dunn as
a 2004 supervisor of Shattered Dreams, a program that set up staged drunk
driving crashes for students.

Attempts to reach family of Bushong and Dunn were unsuccessful Monday.
