Horning, David David J. Horning, MD, died peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Dave was predeceased by his wife Jill Bushong Horning, his wife Betsy Richards Horning, his grandson Daniel David Horning II and his son-in-law Juan-Miguel (JM) Elizalde. He is survived by his children Sarah Jackoboice (John), Daniel Horning (Julie) and Susan Elizalde; grandchildren Ashley Horning Gasper (Daniel), Jill Horning Margulis (Bruce), John Mikel Elizalde and Cecilia Jill Elizalde, nieces and nephews and his devoted special friend, Mary White. David was born in Grand Rapids, MI on March 1,1929. He was educated in the public systems including Grand Rapids Junior College. He transferred to the University of Michigan with a bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine degree. Following his internship at Mercy Health St. Mary's, he had his residency training in surgery at the University of Michigan and Urology at the University of Kansas. Dave's residency training was interrupted by his service in the US Navy as a Flight Surgeon assigned to the First Marine Aircraft Wing with duty in Korea, Japan and Okinawa and aboard aircraft carriers in the Western Pacific. Dr. Horning returned to Grand Rapids to practice until his retirement in 1998. He was on the Consulting Staff at St. Mary's Hospital, Butterworth Hospital, Blodgett Hospital, Ferguson-Droste-Ferguson Hospital and Mary Free Bed Hospital and was the Chief of Urology at Butterworth in the late 1960's and at St. Mary's from the early 1970's until his retirement. During his career, he was certified by the American Board of Urology and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the American Urological Society of Michigan and the Transplantation Society of Michigan. Dave was a founding member of the William L Valk Society for Urological Education. While practicing at St. Mary's, he was a founding member of the surgical team of the Renal Transplant Program at St. Mary's. He was also active in the House Staff training programs. A sailor, hunter and fisherman, Dave alway took time to enjoy outdoor activities with his family and many friends at the Kinne Creek Club. He was also known to play bridge and golf several times a week in his retirement at Kent Country Club. He loved to read, listen to his many jazz CD's and filled his calendar with dinner and play dates with his many friends to Circle Theater, Civic Theater, Broadway Theater and to the University of Michigan performances. He would also be very disappointed if his obituary didn't shout out a big "GO BLUE!!" A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 29th at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 134 S. Division Avenue, Grand Rapids, MI. ADRIAN - Howard Lester Van Gorder, age 88, of Adrian passed away on April 17, 2018.
Howard will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Cynthia Jean (Bushong); daughters, Brenda and Chuck Wagner, Sue and Clifford Yeider; grandchildren, Samantha, Bill, Dawn, Jacob, Andrew, Stacy, Matthew, Joshua; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ethel and Bruce Osgood, Joyce (Moline) Jones; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Flossie (Weldon) Van Gorder; granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth and Rebekah; nephew, Virgil; sister, MaryAnn and Pete Ruble; and brother-in-law, Harry Moline.
Howard's first job was at age 6 selling corn cobs door-to-door from his wagon to Clinton housewives to use to start their wood burning stoves. It meant a lot to him that he was always able to find work - including farming, stock boy, building, roofing, and he retired from Tecumseh Products after 34 years. He loved country music, woodworking, square dancing, camping, and living on his parents' farm. But, most of all, he loved his family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Wagley Funeral Home, 1501 W. Maumee St., Adrian. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
