-----------------------------

Arnoul was the 29th. Bishop of Metz, in 612. He was canonized by the Church, Saint Arnoul. He became the Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, and tutor of Dagobert. In the year 614, when Clotaire II hadhad Brunehaut killed, he remained the only descendant of the sons of Clovis alive. But he is only a toy in the hands of the Franc aristocracy both lay and ecclesiastic. At the head of each of the three ancient kingdoms, Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy, the Major Domus [Mayor of the Palace] gains progressively greater importance. On 18 October 614, Clotaire II signed the Edict of Paris which in27 articles, essentially formed the basic power structure for the Council of Bishops and the Assembly of the Greats [nobles].

In 623, Clotaire II was pushed by the Bishop of Metz and also Pepin [Le Vieux de Landen] , the Mayor of the Palace to give Austrasia its own King. Thus, Clotaire II's son Dagobert became King of Austrasia and under the tutelage of Arnoul. 1 _UID E29AF144-222E-46DD-9E19-19E4E7F148AE. Ancestral Roots (line 190-9) states that Itta is supposed daughter of Arnoldus Bishop of Metz. Obviously there is no convincing evidence, one way or the other, just hints & estimations. I had previously determined that Dode was possibly/probably daughter of Arnoldus, which (if Itta were her sister) would make Saint Begga and her husband Ansgise/Ansgisel 1st cousins. While marriages between 1stcousins were not uncommon during this era, these people were supposedly close to the church and may not have countenanced such a marriage.

Thus I have decided to adopt the following ancestry for Itta, given below in a post to SGM, 18 Feb 2003, by David Hughes (nothing is sure):

am curious about the sudden interest in Attila The Hun & the genealogy of his house. . . for what it is worth here are my notes on the subject for consideration:

[note: the sons of ATTILA quarreled after his death over the chieftainship, during which, Ardaric, the Gepidae king, rallied the Germans against their Hunnish masters and utterly defeated the Huns atthe Battle of Nedao, 456, after which the remnant of the Huns gathered around the sons & grandsons of Attila "the Hun", creating several groups, of which some remained in Germany and Central Europe while others retreated to Scythia-Minor and became the Magyars, Bulgars, & Mongols]

note: the descent-line from Attila The Hun to Charlemagne posted recently on the net is incorrect, however, the descent can be made through the wife of Pepin of Landen rather than through his mother, which then would be:

Clovis The Riparian, Frankish King of Cologne, living 420, kinsman of Clovis I. [Ancestral Roots]

Note: As Clovis I (Ruled 481-511) killed his great grandson Cloderic in 509, the term "kinsman", which to me means cousin or brother, seems a little wrong. 1 _UID 1D8DD39E-3139-4E17-B0B2-5125A36FF9F1. Clovis the Riparian King of Cologne had person sources.1

Governed the Salic Franks
Defeated "Attila the Hun" in 451
Was son or son-in-law of Clodion

Before 430, the Salic Francs traverse the Escaut, and settle north of Gand [Gant] and also into Courtrai. Their chief, Clodion, takes Cambrai in 430. When Clodion died in 448, Merovee would succeed him as chief. Merovee was a Frankish Prince who ruled over the Saliennes [thus, this Merovee is King of the Salic Francs] from 452-458. He was the commander of the Francs in the great Battle of the Catalonic Fields, where he defeated Attila the Hun in 451. It is from his name that the kings of the First Race derived their name. The Huns had steadily increased their domination from humble beginningsoff the Caspian sea from Caucase to the Elbe, from Muldavia to Hungary in the later part of the Fourth Century.

(Andre Castelot, Histoire de La France, Pages, 176, 200). Born: before 390, son of Arcadios Claudius Claudianus and Eudoxie, Merovee is presumed to have been at least 15 years of age by the time his son Childeric I was born. Married before 405: She was a concubine. Note - between 451 and 458:

During his reign the Empress of the Roman Empire, Galla Placidia, in 423 governed in the name of her 4-year old son, Valentinius III. She put the Gallo-Roman Aetius [who really came from Bulgaria [originally Silistria] in charge of maintaining the Roman authority over Gaule.

Although he was unsuccessful against the Wisigoths, he pushed the Riparian Francs beyond the Rhine. In 440, the Riparians would return and take over Cologne and Treves. In the meantime, the Burgundians settle in what would become Bourgogne and in Savoie. In 443, they are camped around Worms and Mayence under the command of their King, Gonthier.
