Son of Jesse Gilbert and Sarah Harding. Husband of Sarah Kirk whom he married on 22 Oct 1807 per the family bible.

Amos was a prominent teacher in Lancaster County, PA, and briefly wrote with his son Howard the educational periodical, "The Inciter." In the summer of 1834, he moved to Salem County, OH continuing his teaching and taking with him his printing press.

At some point prior to 1848, he would return to Pennsylvania and can be found living with his daughter Abana and son-in-law Lewis Peart in 1850. His wife Sarah remained in Ohio living with their son Barclay.

Both Amos and son-in-law Lewis were ardent Quaker Abolotionists and active with the Underground railroad.

A passage from the memoirs of Oliver Cromwell Gilbert, an escaped slave assisted by Amos Gilbert, compliments of a descendant:

"My brother was tall and stately fine looking. He wore a heavy beard. He got a razor and shaved to disguise himself. He hid away among some colored people for a few days then worked his way to a Quaker friend, who lived in Little Briton Lancaster Co. by the name of Amos Gilbert. And form there we met at Bart Township. I began to work for James Jackson Friday morning 1848, the later part of August.

One day she, Mrs. Jackson came to me and told me to go over and see my brother laying sick unto death. We were surprised to meet each other again and it was a very pleasant meeting. Here came the change in our names. Mrs. Jackson and the Quaker friends in the section advised us to take a new name. Brother Reuben changed his from Reuben to Amos Gilbert. I changed only a part of my name. Gilbert was added to Oliver which made my name Oliver Cromwell Gilbert."

Jesse Gilbert was born in Lancaster County and
is a son of Joshua and Elizabeth (Valentine)
Gilbert; his mother, a native of Chester County,
and his father of Lancaster County. He grew to
manhood in his native county, At the age of
twenty-eight years he removed to Chester County
and engaged in farming in connection with which
he carried on pump making for three years. At the
expiration of that time he came to Lower
Chanceford, purchased a farm of 167 acres, which
he has since cultivated, and in the meantime has
been engaged in selling fruit trees and
ornamental shrubbery. He has held the office of
township auditor. January 3, 1861, he was married
to D. Anna Hunter, daughter of Alexander and Mary
P. Hunter, of Lancaster County. Mr. Gilbert is a
member of the Society of Friends, and belongs to the Meeting at Fawn Grove.
