OBITUARIES

DONALD C. BUSHONG
Donald C. Bushong, 64, 1214 W. Havens Street, died at 11:20 a.m.
Friday, 16 July 1993, at the home of a daughter, 4508 E. Road 200 South.
Born 18 April 1929, in Tompkinsville, Kentucky, he was a son of Cleo
and Ida (Humes) Bushong. He was married 30 June 1953, in Tompkinsville, to
Rebecca L. Harlan, who survives.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired in 1991 after 11
years of employment at Todd Uniform in Indianapolis. He also had worked in
maintenance at Hardee's Restaurant, 214 N. Dixon Road. He was a member of
Temple Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a son, Don C. Bushong of Kokomo; three daughters,
Palma Ward and Beverly Norris, both of Kokomo, and Debra Rosenbush of
Bringhurst; a brother, William Bushong of Hamlet; six sisters, Nina Tradewell of
Fairburg, Illinois, Mayme Conwell of Hammond, Illinois, Ruennel Shrum of
North Salem. Rowena Cooper of New Market, Nola Frazier of Darlington, and
Christene Johnson of Kingsford Heights; nine grandchildren; and two
step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ellers Mortuary Main Street
chapel. The Rev. Mike Holloway will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery. A military service will be conducted at the cemetery by the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152, Kokomo.
Friends may call from 2-4 and from 6-8 p.m. today at the mortuary.
The family would like to thank the Howard County Cancer Society and

William E. ("Willie E.") Bushong was born on 29 July 1896 in Summer Shade, Metcalfe County, Kentucky. He and Beulah May White were married on 21 January 1922 in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky. He and Gertie Frances ("Gertie") Matthews were married on 23 May 1923 in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky. He died on 2 March 1971, at age 74, in Crawford, Montgomery County, Indiana. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana.

William E. ("Willie E.") Bushong was also known as Willie Uptigrove. *vetting Indicates an interest in confirmation or additional research proving the ancestors of this individual.

It looks like Mary, aka Polly and Mollie could have been pregnant when she married Robert Uptigrove in Dec 26 1895, as son William "Willie" was born 8 months later, (this could be proven with a DNA test for male descendants). Willie is first listed as an Uptigrove in the 1900 census, there after he is listed as a Bushong. In his obituary, his parents are listed as Montgomery Bushong and mother Mollie. Further, In the 1900 census, Willie is also likely listed as the William A, age 7, grandson to Henry and Lucy Bushong. If so, Willie would have been enumerated first with Robert and Mollie Uptegrove on June 8 1900, in Temple Hill (west part), Barren, Kentucky, and would have traveled to Brush, Monroe, Kentucky, by June 18th to be enumerated second with his grandparents. Also with his grandparents was William's cousin, Oscar Green Bushong, who's mother Malinda Bushong married George Uptigrove an uncle of William's. Further, in 1900, Robert Uptegrove and family were listed amongst many Matthew, who are most likely related to Willie's future wife, Gertie Frances Matthew or her parents James D Matthew and Lougenia Bell Harvey Matthew.

Further about the Uptigroves...

Two Bushong sisters, Mary Ann and Malinda married two Uptigrove brothers, Robert Uptigrove and George F. Uptigrove, respectively. George and Robert were the sons of Elmus Uptegrow and Judy E. Meadon. George and Malinda Uptigrove had a son, also named Robert Uptigrove. It is interesting to note that both sisters, Malinda and Mary married Uptigroves, and both apparently had illegitimate children, Oscar and Willie. This taken from the fact that neither child carried the Uptigrove name.

In the 1920 census, Samuel Bushong is listed with wife Mary Ann Bushong, so before then and after the marriage between Robert Uptigrove and Mary dissolved, she married Samuel Montgomery Bushong, who is a 3rd cousin once removed, a son of John Newton Bushong and Nancy Harvey Bushong.

Sam's sister, Deborah Catherine Bushong, married a Mr. Aterburn, but was listed as divorced in the 1930 census.

Willie E Bushong, 74, died at 1:55 am Tuesday at Lane House.
He was a member of Coral Hill Baptist Church in Kentucky.
Born July 29, 1896, at Summer Shade, KY, he was the son of Montgomery and Mollie Bushong. He was married May 5, 1923 at Glasgow, Ky, to Gertie Frances Matthews.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas and Leo both of Crawfordsville; three daughters, Mrs. Marie Gavens of Crawfordsville, Mrs. Lue Etta Poore of Waveland, Mrs. Elizabeth Winegar of Batavia, Ill 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sons and two grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday at Hunt and son funeral home with Rev Edward Summerfield officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 pm Wednesday. Viewed death certificate...
