Mrs. Laura Catherine Hitchings, widow of John W. Hitchings, who observed the ninety-first anniversary of her birth on May 26, and a resident of the Rensselaer area since 1889 and of the city proper since 1920, died at the family home at 206 S. Front Street at 12:20 o'clock this morning.
The death of one of the city's few nonagenarians came in the wake of a general decline extended over a four year period. Her health began to slowly break soon after she suffered a hip fracture resulting from a fall at her home in 1949.
Mrs. Hitchings was born northeast of Brookston in White county on May 26, 1862, a daughter of Joseph Garriott and Mary Elizabeth Garriott. It was in that home she was married to John W. Hitchings on February 14, 1883, The couple spent their first five years in Illinois, after which they moved to Newton county, remaining there for one year before moving to Jasper county. Until thirty-three years ago they lived southwest of Rensselaer, after which they came to Rensselaer to spend their remaining years. Mr. Hitchings passed away September 16, 1952. She was a member of the Universalist church.
Mr. and Mrs. Hitchings became the parents of four children, three of whom survive. The surviving children are Orville Hitchings of Rensselaer, Ray Hitchings of Jordan township and Mrs. William Johnson of Morocco. Other immediate survivors are nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bertie, who passed away in 1917, one brother and six sisters.
The funeral services will be held from Jackson Funeral Chapel at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. Earl Moore of Dayton, former Methodist church pastor here, will officiate. Interment will be at Weston cemetery.
