Reference Number: v A p 310. A descendant of John Calvin Bushong and Marcella Devlin sent documents and how Henry went to Virginia to join the Confederate army and spy for the North. He was caught, sent to prison and then was pardoned by the governor after the war was over. According to his military paperwork this Henry Bushong, (Son of John of the 1869 Will) enlisted 7 May 1861 in Company A, 5th Calvary. John W. Puller was the Captain of the Regiment. This later became the 26th Regiment, Virginia Infantry known as the Black Horse Calvary. He was 35 years old when he enlisted, had dark complexion, black hair, gray eyes, and was 6 feet 2 inches tall. His occupation was that of a Miller and his residence was Lancaster, Pennsylvania. On the Company Muster Roll for May and June 1861 he was Present, for July, August he was Present, for September and October he was Present and then in November and December 1861 he was absent and sick with leave. In January and February of 1862 he was Present, then it jumps to November and December 1863 where he is Absent without leave. January and February 1864 he is noted as Prisoner in hands of enemy and in March and April, no notation. Then on the roll of Prisoners of War received at Fort Mifflin, (Philadelphia) Pennsylvania from Provost Marshall, 9 district Pennsylvania, 17 November 1863, it is noted Henry Bushong, Private Company A, 5th Regiment Virginia Calvary was arrested at Lancaster, Pennsylvania on 16 November 1863. It is noted that Henry said that he was a Captain of Black Horse Calvary and spy. The strange part is that he was released by Order of General Cadwalader and took the oath of Allegiance on 25 November 1863 at Ft. Mifflin, Pennsylvania. He then lived in Virginia until returning to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by 1880.
The land referred to in the Swope family history was actually land that was
owned by the father John Bushong and given to son Henry and daughter Anna
at some point in time before he died. Evidently Anna filed a lawsuit
against Aaron Glockey in 1885 to obtain the right to own the land given to her by
her father. BUSHONG-SWOPE.-On the 14th ult., by the same (Rev. Samuel Trumbauer), Henry BUSHONG, of East Lampeter, to Catharine SWOPE, of Upper Leacock.[The Lancaster Intelligencer: Tues. 2 Jan. 1849: Marriages: Page 3]. United States Census, 1880 for Henry Bushong

A SERIOUS LOSS
On the 12th ult. the large Steam Grist and Saw Mills, situated in
Gloucester county, Va., about 50 miles below Richmond, and owned by Henry
Bushong and John G. Landis, of Lancaster County, were totally consumed by fire,
together with about $3000 worth of lumber.
About two years ago these gentlemen purchased a tract of woodland
containing some 1500 acres, on which they built these mills, at a cost of
$30,000. Their total loss is estimated at upwards of $50,000, as there was no
insurance on either the mills or lumber. The fire was the work of
incendiaries, as it is supposed it was done by some of the creditors of the firm who
sought this plan of revenging themselves. Stone photo present
