Johannes John Bushong had person sources.2 John recieves land (along with his brother, Jacob) in Allegany County, in 1793....

"The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,

will dated Feb 7 1785 and recorded Feb 26 1785? BUSHONG LINEAGE: Philip Bushong Jr. / Hans Philip Bushong Sr. and Anna Eve Hergard /Hans Bushong and Barbara Bushong, the immigrants.

First of all, was Philip really the son of Hans Philip Sr? For this, Philip Senior's Will and Guardianship papers, from 1785 provide the necessary sources to prove this and several other things.

..."I leave and bequeath unto my nine children viz. as follows except sundry legacies here unto mentioned. John Bushong, Barbara wife of Henry Hardman, PHILLIP Bushong, Peter Bushong, Henry Bushong, Mary Bushong, Jacob Bushong, David Bushong, Elizabeth Bushong, to be equally divided between them"...

Source: Philip Bushong Sr. Will (1785), Washington County Will Book A, pages 107-109, Washington County Orphans Court, Hagerstown, Maryland.

It's plain, the will establishes Philip as a son, and it also establishes Philip Sr's family.
It should be noted, that Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland is only a hundred miles or so from East Lampeter.

Another thing the will illustrates is, it quite likely that the order of the nine children is an indicator of their age, with John the oldest and Elizabeth the youngest. This was common in wills and when reenforced with the subsequent Guardianship proceedings in Lancaster County, in 1785, seems to be the case.

From the 1785 Lancaster Guardianship Proceedings...

Jacob Bushung a minor son of Philip Bushung deceased being above the Age of fourteen Years comes into Court and chooses his Brother John Bushung of Lampeter Township Guardian over his Estate...
David Bushung a minor son of Philip Bushung deceased being above the Age of fourteen Years comes into Court & chooses Henry Witmer of Lampeter Township Guardian over his Estate ....
The Court appoints Christian Hartman of Lampeter Township Guardian over the Estate of Elizabeth Bushung a minor Child of Philip Bushung deceased she being under the Age of fourteen year during her Minority.

Source: Miscellaneous Books, volume 1742-1767, part 2: 14-15, Lancaster County Orphans Court, Lancaster, Pennsylvania;

The guardianship records mentions four of Philip Sr's heirs and it shows, John is old enough - over 21 - to be guardian for Jacob. Further, Jacob and David are over 14 years old but less than 21. Elizabeth is under age 14. Also by inference the ages of other children, not mentioned, Barbara wife of Henry Hardman, PHILLIP Bushong, Peter Bushong, Henry Bushong, Mary Bushong are all above 21.

Establishing ranges for the dates of birth from the guardianship records, the year 1764 is 21 years before 1785, and year 1771 is 14 years before, as follows...

John Bushong: born before 1764
Barbara wife of Henry Hardman: born before 1764
PHILIP Bushong: born before 1764
Peter Bushong: born before 1764
Henry Bushong: born before 1764
Mary Bushong: born before 1764
Jacob Bushong: born between 1771 and 1764
David Bushong: born between 1771 and 1764
Elizabeth Bushong: born after 1771

Comparing this with any dates noted, results in this...

John Bushong: born before 1764 (actual: December 2 1750 from tombstone)
Barbara wife of Henry Hardman: born before 1764 (1752 unsourced)
PHILIP Bushong: born before 1764 (Aug 1761 unsourced)
Peter Bushong: born before 1764 (1762 unsourced)
Henry Bushong: born before 1764 (May 18 1763 unsourced)
Mary Bushong: born before 1764 (Apr 25 1776 unsourced)
Jacob Bushong: born between 1771 and 1764 (actual: 1767 from tombstone)
David Bushong: born between 1771 and 1764 (actual: Aug., 1767 from tombstone)
Elizabeth Bushong : born after 1771 (Jun 3 1778 )

Philip Sr's children's birth dates, a mixture of sourced and WWW unsourced all fit into the given time frames and his son Philip was born at least before 1764.

But Philip Bushong in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is enumerated in the 1790 and 1800 census, and one researcher believes, it is a different Philip and not the son of Philip Sr. This was discussed in 2007 by Adam Boyd and should have been settled, so this is an attempt to further vet his census records.

In the 1800 census Philip, as head of household, is listed as over 45 which puts his date of birth as before 1755, which still works with the date range from the guardianship papers. Further, a search for Bushong in Pennsylvania at Familysearch.org in the 1800 census reveals these heads of households...

United States Census, 1800
Jacob Bushong United States Census, 1800 residence: 4 August 1800 Lebanon, Dauphin, Pennsylvania
John Bushung United States Census, 1800 residence: 4 August 1800 Lampeter, Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Philip Bushing United States Census, 1800 residence: 4 August 1800 Lampeter, Lancaster, Pennsylvania

In 1800, three of Philip Sr's sons, Philip, John and Jacob are still living in Pennsylvania, as is correct. As such, there is no reason to doubt that the Philip Bushong, who was living in Lancaster County in 1785, is the same one found there, five years later for the 1790 census, and subsequently is there for the 1800 census, with two brothers. So, three of Philip Sr's, sons never left Pennsylvania and three of them did....

Brothers, Henry and David moved away and are not counted in Pennsylvania in 1800. They were probably in Virginia or Tennessee. By 1798, David was buying property in Sullivan County, Tennessee. and in August of 1802, both were already buying and selling land in Sullivan County, Tennessee...

"David Bushong of the County of Sullivan and State of Tennessee of the one part and Henry Bushong of the County of Shenandoah State of Virginia" August 16, 1798

Brother Peter is not listed either, because before the 1800 census, he had left. and he ended up in Virginia, too. He is enumerated in Virginia in the 1810 census and one of his children (Peter Jr. born 1792) always claimed he was born in Virginia.

So Philip Jr. and his five brothers, the sons of Philip Bushong and Anna Eva Hergard, and grandsons of Hans and Barbara Bushong, are all accounted for. Philip is living along with two brothers in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There is no other possible conclusion except that the Philip Bushong counted in the 1790 and 1800 census is the son of Hans Philip Bushong and Anna Eve Hergard.

To be continued. Next, the family of Philip Bushong Jr.

The above record shows that the above referenced Philip Bushong had at least four children: John, Jacob, David, and Elizabeth. Probably Jacob, David, and Elizabeth were the youngest as John is old enough to be the guardian over his brother Jacob's estate. A look at an excerpt from the will of Philip Bushong (Last Will and Testament of Phillip Bushong. 7 Feb 1785. Proven 26 Feb 1785. Register of Wills, Washington County Courthouse, Maryland. Will Book A, Pages 107-9) records his children:
-----
I leave and bequeath unto my nine children viz as follows except sundry legacies hereto mentioned. John Bushong, Barbary wife of Henry Hardman, Phillip Bushong, Peter Bushong, Henry Bushong, Mary Bushong, Jacob Bushong, David Bushong, Elizabeth Bushong to be equal divided between them.
-----
So we learn that Philip Bushong who died in Washington County, Maryland, did indeed have four children named John, Jacob, David, and Elizabeth. It seems that Philip listed his children in order of their birth because Jacob, David, and Elizabeth are listed last. It would be very unlikely that there were two Philip Bushong's who both died in 1785 with their youngest three children named Jacob, David, and Elizabeth. These two references to Philip Bushong are almost certainly one and the same. The
reference in the 1800 census is probably to Philip Bushong's (d. 1785) son Philip. Who is listed as the third child in his father's will.

Subject : The Bushong Family John Bushong, a French Huguenot, arrived in Philadelphia in September, 1731, and immediately came to Lancaster County and took up land near what is now Heller's Church. The Bushongs who reside in this township are the descendants of this John Bushong, who had a family of six boys--John, Philip, Peter, Henry, Jacob, and David--and three girls,--Mary, Barbara, and Elizabeth. In 1737 Mrs. John Bushong died, and Mr. Bushong married a second time. His son Peter emigrated to Virginia, where a prominent branch of this family still resides. Jacob went to what is now BerksCounty, and the noted bankers of Reading--the Bushongs--are the descendants of Jacob Bushong. David went to Illinois. Philip Bushong inherited his father's estate. John Bushong, son of Philip, is the grandfather of Isaac Bushong, Esq., an influential citizen of this township and county. Amos Bushong, miller, of East Lampeter, and Dr. Bushong, New Holland, are of this family. Isaac Bushong, of thistownship, has in his possession a copy of the will written by John Bushong, bearing date June 5, 1749.

lawilliams693093. Underground Railroad

Robert Clemen Smedley’s “History of the Underground Railroad in Chester and the Neighboring Counties of Pennsylvania” records the following incidents:

Jacob Bushong, of Bart, Lancaster County, a quiet but devoted laborer in the cause of freedom, relates the case of one Hamilton Moore who settled in his neighborhood. He was peaceable and respected, and to all appearances a white man. Not a tinge of African blood was discernible in his complexion, nor had any one the least suspicion that there was any. He married a white woman and became the father of three children. After the lapse of several years a number of men came to his dwelling and claimed him as a runaway slave; the leader of this gang being Hamilton Moore’s father.

Although that was a pro-slavery community, the man’s purely Anglo-Saxon appearance and good character had so won the esteem of his neighbors that they would not submit to what they termed an outrage upon him, but arose en masse and rescued him from his captors. He was then taken to the house of Henry Bushong, Jacob’s father, in Adams County, who assisted him to a place of greater security.

About the year 1831, a person calling himself William Wallace, but whose slave name was “Snow,” came to Wm. Kirk’s in West Lampeter township, Lancaster county. Here he worked for some time, then went to Joshua Gilbert’s in Bart township, and afterwards was employed by Henry Bushong, who had now removed to Bart township, and whose place became one of the Underground Railroad stations. After remaining there two years, his wife and child were brought to him from one of the Carolinas …

In the summer of 1835 while he and Jacob Bushong were at work in the barn, they observed four men in a two-horse wagon drive into the lane, accompanied by two men on horseback. Jacob thought them a “suspicious looking crowd,” and told Wallace to keep out of sight while he went out to meet them. They inquired if Mr. Wallace lived there. Jacob replied in the negative, satisfying his conscience by means of the fact that William lived at a tenement house, but worked for him. Pointing towards Wallace’s house they asked if his family lived there; to which he made no reply. Leaving their horses in charge of two of the men, they went to the house, tied his wife, brought her and the oldest child to the wagon, loaded them in, took them to the Lancaster county jail, and lodged them there. The youngest child being born on free soil was left with a colored woman who happened to be in the house at the time. From there they went to John Urick’s, a colored man, whose wife had escaped from slavery with Wallace’s wife. They bound her, took her to jail also, and had the two women placed in the same cell while they started out on another hunt.

The startling news soon spread throughout the country, and was immediately carried to that foremost friend of the slave, Daniel Gibbons. Very early next morning the two women came to his house. The family would not have been more surprised had an apparition come suddenly into their midst. When asked how they came, one of them said, “I broke jail.”

“How did you do it?”

“I found a case-knife, and got up from one room to another until I got next the roof, when I cut the lath and shingles and broke through; got out and down to the roof of an adjoining house, and thence from one house to another until I came to one that was low enough, and then I jumped from it to the ground.”

They were taken to the wheat field and provided with blankets and food, and next night were taken by Dr. Joseph Gibbons, Daniel’s son, and Thomas Peart, several miles to the house of Jesse Webster. From there they were taken to Thomas Bonsall’s, thence to John Vicker’s, and thus on to other stations.

The account given by the women seemed so strange and incredible that Dr. Gibbons interviewed that eccentric character “Devil-Dave” Miller, who was then sheriff, and lived in the jail. When asked how it happened that he allowed two negro women to slip through his fingers, he winked and laughed. It was afterwards discovered that he opened the jail door and let them walk out. This was the only black woman known to Daniel and his son who persisted in keeping her own secret.

In 1832, a colored (sic) woman and her daughter came to Henry Bushong’s. The back of this poor woman was a most revolting spectacle for Christian eyes to behold. It had been cut into gashes with the master’s whip until it was a mass of lacerated flesh and running sores. Her owner was exasperated to this deed of cruelty on account of one of her children having successfully escaped, and she, knowing its whereabouts, refused to tell. To compel her to reveal this secret, they bound her down in a bent position, and five hundred lashes with a cat-o-nine-tails were inflicted upon her naked back. Yet with the faithfulness and devotion of a mother’s love she endured it all. Seeing that no amount of whipping could induce her to betray her child and thus return it from freedom to slavery, and fearing her own life might be lost by further infliction, they ceased plying the lash upon that quivering back, which was now a mass of mangled flesh and jellied blood. As soon as she had sufficiently recovered, she determined to risk her life in an attempt to free herself from the cruelty and tortures of a slavery like this. After being kindly and tenderly cared for in the home of Henry Bushong, she was taken to a station further east.

Part 2 of the story of the Bushong family will appear next week on WND. Read the full account of “A House Divided” on the Leben website.

THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY IN LANCASTER COUNTYThe information available would indicate that the Underground Railroad in Lancaster County began to operate soon afterthe beginning of the nineteenth century and continued beyond theclose of the Civil War.Three main routes passed through Lancaster County, all ofthem leading eventually in the direction of Christiana, which seemed to be the point of crossing over into Chest~r County for the continued journey north in the direction of Canada. There were manystations available in Chester County. The fugitives from Frederick, Maryland; Winchester, Virginia;and parts farther south; came through Frankifn, Adams, and YorkCounties, entering Lancaster County at Columbia, where WilliamWright was an active agent; he may have begun to operate as earlyas 1804. From the Wright home fugitives were sent to the Gibbonshome near Bird-in-Hand, and then to homes of Dr. J. K. Eshleman in Strasburg, Thomas Whitson at Bart, Jeremiah Moore near Chris tiana, and others.A second route was used by the fugitives who came from Baltimore. They came to the banks of the Susquehanna River at PeachBottom, where they were met by a Negro, who rowed them acrossthe river at night, and directed them to the home of Joseph Smithnear Liberty Square. Smith directed many to the homes of ThomasWhitson and Lindley Coates, who lived near Christiana. Otherswere sent to the John N. Russell farm near Unicorn, who in turndirected them to the Bushong and Hood farms in Bart Township, and then towards Christiana. The route from the river, at PeachBottom, to the Russell farm can still be followed-part of it is onlya path, and part is hard-top. This is still known locally as the Pilgrim's Pathway.

STATION TEN -HENRY BUSHONG (1783-1870) The home of Henry Bushong was one of the busiest stations inBart Township. Fugitive slaves were sent there by Daniel Gibbonsof Bird-in-Hand, Dr. J. H. Eshleman of Strasburg, Joseph Smith andJohn N. Russell of Drumore, and others. In 1832 a Negro woman and her daughter came to the Bushong place. The back of this poor woman was a revolting sight. It hadbeen cut into gashes with the master's whip until it was a mass oflacerated flesh and running sores. Her owner was exasperated bythe fact that one of her children had escaped and that she knewwhere the child was but refused to tell the owner. To compel herto tell she was bound down in a bent position and five hundredlashes with. a cat-o-nine tails were inflicted upon her bared back.No amount of whipping would induce her to betray her child. Assoon as she had sufficiently recovered she determined to risk herlife and escape, ultimately landing at the home of Henry Bushong, who sent her to a station farther east. There is a small stone house on the Bushong farm which wasbuilt by a free slave, Moses Johnson, and was probably a refuge forescaping slaves. One of the fugitives who was being chased by hisowners moved from the stone house into the hay mow when hispursuers were reported to be in the neighborhood. The presentowner of the Bushong farm, Mrs. H. C. Kreisle, great granddaughterof Henry Bushong, reports that she used this small stone house asa play-house during her childhood. This house has been renovatedand enlarged and is now occupied by the Walter F. Koch Jr. family.Henry Bushong first lived in Adams County, along the CodorusCreek. He married a Quaker and became a Quaker himself, withstrong abolitionist feeling. His great-granddaughter reports that
when he moved from Adams to Lancaster County his possessions consisted of a grain sack and $1200. According to family traditions, on a certain occasion he was accosted by one of the enemies of the abolitionists, who threatened his life, to which he replied, "Burnme if thee will, but thee cannot hurt me."Henry Bushong was a big and powerful man, unafraid of anyone. Later in life he was elected President of the Farmers Loan Co.,which became the Lancaster County National Bank. After organizing the farm work he would frequently walk to Lancaster, a distance of 21 miles, in order to attend to Bank business. The present house is very large as the result of many additions. The original part was a log house, which contains a small closet onthe attic, with a half door, and may have been used asa hide-a-way for fugitive slaves, who were later moved into Chester County inwagons, with hay covered over the fugitives

Dr. Bushong Dies
A prominent citizen of New Holland succumbs to grip.

A Graduate of Jefferson Medical College -- An Odd Fellows pin once saved his life.

Dr. Israel Bushong died at his residence in New Holland, on Wednesday, in his 58th years, after an illness of ten weeks. He was attacked with the grip and a complication of diseases followed which resulted in his death. he was critically ill the past few weeks, and his death was not unexpected. Deceased was the son of John Bushong, a prominent farmer living near Heller's church. He learned the molding trade, and worked at it for some time in distant cities. While in New Orleans the yellow fever was epidemic, and he was attacked with it and dropped over unconscious in the shop. It was thought he was dead, and his body was about to be taken to the morgue, when his fellow workmen believing that there was life in him objected and said they would care for him. In opening his clothes there was found in his vest an Odd Fellow's pin. His fellow workmen were members of the same order, and they felt a greater interest in him. They finally succeeded in restoring him to consciousness, and in a short time he entirely recovered. He attributed the saving of his life to the exertion of his brother Odd Fellows. After his recovery he returned to the North and decided to study medicine. He became a student of Dr. John L. Atlee and attended Jefferson Medical College. He graduated from that institution and began the practice of medicine in Mifflin County. He gave up his practice there to enter the army as a regimental surgeon. while in the army his regiment participated in the Second Battle of Bull Run. Subsequently he was transferred to the Navy, and was present at the Naval Battle at Port Royal. After the war he decided to enter the Navy, and was appointed Surgeon of the United States steamer Augusta. He tired of this service and returned to this county. He opened an office at Bareville, and after practicing a year there removed to New Holland and continued in active practice up to his final illness. His wife was Miss Frances A. Ball, and she and their children survive; Miss Augusta M., a teacher in the public schools of this city; William B., foreman of the Clarion Printing Office, New Holland; Misses Helen, Frederick and Jeanette at home. Miss Augusta was born on the vessel on which her father was Surgeon, and she was named Augusta in honor of that boat. Dr. Bushong was prominent in society circles. He was a member of Lancaster Lodge No 43, of Masons, Chapter 243, Lancaster Commandery Knights Templar and Goodwin Council, New Holland Lodge of Odd Fellows, Ridgely Encampment of which he was a charter member, Admiral Reynolds Post No. 405 G. A. R., and the Lancaster City and County Medical Society. he took an active interest in all the organizations to which he belonged, and was a progressive, enterprising citizen. He had many friends in this city and county, who will regret to hear of his death.

with it and dropped over unconscious in the shop. It was thought he was
dead, and his body was about to be taken to the morgue, when his fellow
workmen believing that there was life in him objected and said they would care for him. In opening his clothes there was found in his vest an Odd Fellow's pin. His fellow workmen were members of the same order, and they felt a greater interest in him. They finally succeeded in restoring him to
consciousness, and in a short time he entirely recovered.

Battle at Port Royal. After the war he decided to enter the Navy, and was
appointed Surgeon of the United States steamer Augusta. He tired of this
service and returned to this county. He opened an office at Bareville, and after practicing a year there removed to New Holland and continued in active practice up to his final illness.

and their children survive; Miss Augusta M., a teacher in the public schools
