CLAIR B. DIFFENBAUGH, 89, RETIRED INSURANCE AGENT

Former Lancaster resident Clair B. Diffenbaugh, who worked in his family insurance business for 57 years, died Tuesday at Genesee Hospital, Rochester, New York. He was 89.
Diffenbaugh was a resident of Penfield, New York. The husband of Elizabeth Haas Diffenbaugh, he was known for entertaining is family, friends and clients with his puns and jokes.
Diffenbaugh was a licensed agent of Travelers Insurance Companies, which had named him one of its leading accident and health insurance agents at one time. The agency that carried his family named was started by his father in 1904. In 1973, Diffenbaugh sold the agency to insurance Management Inc. He continued to serve the company, retiring in 1981.
Diffenbaugh was known for his humor, and he enjoyed making puns and other jokes. Under the pseudonym of "The Smiling Deacon," he sold numerous one-liners to "Captain Billy's Whiz Bang," a humor magazine of the 1920s and 1930s.
Later, he contributed humor to The Scribbler column in the Lancaster New Era. Difffenbaugh also was an after-dinner speaker at meetings of insurance managers.
"I've had fun all my life - nothing but fun," he said in a 1981 interview. "I only stayed in the insurance business because I'd rather do that than work."
His love of puns was sparked while he was a student at Lancaster Boys High School, Diffenbaugh recalled in a 1981 interview. He and some schoolmates convinced the principal to teach them classical Greek, and Diffenbaugh discovered that the early Greeks frequently used puns in their writing. Decades later at his insurance office, Diffenbaugh still left notes to himself in Greek.
Diffenbaugh also studied the English language, and he once read the two-volume Oxford English Dictionary from cover to cover.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Milton H. and Jeanette Bushong Diffenbaugh.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Elaine D., wife of James O. Case, Pittsford, New York; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Stone photo present - double with Milton

EARLY CALLED
UNEXPECTED DEATH OF WILLIAM B. BUSHONG, ESQ. OF THIS BOROUGH
Like a flash of lightning in a thunderstorm, the startling news spread
early last Tuesday morning that William B. Bushong, Esq. a well known
resident of our borough, had passed beyond the portals of time into eternity.
Although effected for several years with dyspepsia and liver troubles,
from which he was occasionally indisposed for a few days, during the past
summer and fall he said he felt better than usual. Up to Friday evening he
was at work, although he complained during the afternoon of feeling unwell.
Friday night about ten o'clock he was seized with a violet pain in the
abdomen, and Dr. Kohler, his family physician was summoned. After administering
some medicine he felt easier and during Saturday he seemed to be getting
along favorably. On Sunday he was much worse all the symptoms of
appendicitis, appearing and nothing but a continuous use of opiates gave him relief.
On Monday afternoon Dr. M. H. Davis of Lancaster, was called in and he
agreed with Dr. Kohler's diagnosis of the case and said that the only hope for
saving his life was a surgical operation. Accordingly, he was taken to
Lancaster on the evening train leaving here at 7:07 and conveyed to St. Joseph's
Hospital where the medical staff was in readiness to perform the
operation. The appendix was very much inflamed and greatly enlarged and beside it a
large abscess had formed, which evidently had opened that afternoon and
discharged over a pint of pus. His liver was also in bad condition and the
physicians all said it was a marvel that he was able to work as long as he
did, without suffering much more. The operation was performed successfully by
nine o'clock and at ten o'clock when the influence of the ether was gone,
he seemed quite cheerful and there was fair hopes for his recovery. But an
hour later he began to sink and shortly after one o'clock he died.
William Ball Bushong was a son of Dr. Israel and Frances Ball Bushong,
and was born in Bareville on 21 March 1868, so that his age was thirty-one
years and eight months. He was educated in the public schools of this town
and in August 1883, he entered the Clarion office to learn the trade of
printing, and since that time had been continuously employed here, except about
six months in the year 1889, when he was at work on the Legislative
Record. In 1890, on the death of Mr. I. V. Miller, he was made foreman of the
office and held that position to the time of his death. In 1892 he was elected
a Justice of the Peace for Earl township, when not quite twenty-four years
of age. On the expiration of his term in 1897, he was re-elected to the
same office for this borough. He was gifted with more than ordinary
intelligence, was a skillful and efficient workman, always faithful in the discharge
of his duties, and with his more than sixteen years service we feel as
though one of our own household had been taken from us, while to all those who
have been working with him here at the case nearly all of these years, his
death has been a great shock also. Cut down at a time when he should have
been in the full vigor of manhood, we are most impressively reminded that
while:
Leaves have their time to fall
And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath,
And stars to set, but all
Thou has't all seasons for thine own, O Death.
Mr. Bushong was a past grand in Earl Lodge, No. 413, I. O. O. F., and a
past chief in New Holland Castle, No. 157, K. G. E. He was also a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church. Nine years ago he was married to Lillian
Shiffer, widow of Jacob F. Shiffer, who survives him with three children by her
first husband, Roy of Philadelphia, and Anna and Mary at home. His mother, now
residing in Lancaster, one brother Fred; and four sisters; Augusta M.,
Helen and Jeanette, all of Lancaster and Bertha who holds a position in Mount
Airy deaf and dumb asylum, Philadelphia, also survives him. In their
unexpected sorrow these bereft ones have the sincere sympathy of a large circle
of friends.
The funeral of the deceased was held yesterday morning at eleven
o'clock from his late residence in the bank building, and was in Trinity Lutheran
Church and the pastor, Rev. Albert Steinhaeuser, preached an excellent and
very consolatory sermon on the words of the prophet Samuel: "It is the
Lord; let him do what seemeth him good." Both the fraternal orders of which he
was a member, attended the funeral, six members from each serving as
bearers. At the grave the I. O. O. F. burial service was read by Past Grand J. H.
Weaver and Chaplain George H. Ranck.
There were several very pretty floral tributes comprising bouquets of
pink roses, white carnations and chrysanthemums by members of the family and
a floral piece from the Clarion office representing a broke column
entwined with smilnx and surrounded with roses. etc. etc. etc. The New Holland Clarion
