Biography of Jean George Bachmann
Jean George Bachmann discovered the function of the intraauricular Bundle. Born in Germany, he studied at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, where he was conferred doctor of medicine in 1907. He worked as a resident in physiology at the Jefferson Hospital, and was demonstrator of physiology at the college. He was professor of physiology at the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons 1910-1915, and in 1915 followed a call to the Emory University, School of Medicine in Georgia. ]can George Bachmann (FiguR I), Professor and Chairnlan,
Department of Physiology at Emory University
School of Medicine from 1910 to 1947, was among the
fiat to do medical research in Atlanta, Georgia....
...
Jean George Bachmann was born in Mulhouse, Alsace
Province on July 18, 1877, and was raised in Nancy,
France. He ran away from home at the age of 20 and
joined the merchant marines. He made more than 20 trips
across the Pacific Ocean in this service. Obviously, he
was an individualist.
He finally settled in the United States in 1902 and taught
French and German in the Pennsylvania school system
beforc entering Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.
He graduated from Jefferson at the top of his class in 1907.
He won the Phillips Award as the “most worthy student.”
Following graduation he became an intern and then resident
physiologist and demonstrator at Jefferson Medical
School. He moved to Atlanta in 19 I0 to become Professor
and Chairman of the Department of Physiology in the
Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons. This was five
years before that school became a part of Emory University
School of Medicine. He continued in that role until
1947.
He wrote many articles on the electrophysiology of the
heart (see References). The textbook he coauthored with
A. Richard Bliss, Jr., Essentials of Physiology und Pharmacodyriamics.
was widely used in the United States and
Europe. He was a medical officer in the U.S. Arniy during
1917-1918.
Dr. Bachmann had many intercsts. He was an acconiplished
artist. He painted landscapes and drew scientific
charts and illustrations. He was a linguist, speaking
French, Gernian, Spanish, and perfect English. He was
a culinary expert. He revealed that his ambition during
his youth was to manage a grand hotel. He occasionally
worked as a chef in French. Swiss, British, and Irish
hotels. He actually paid his tuition at Jefferson Medical
College by working in Eastern hotels. Dinner in his home
was, by reputation, a great delight. He was witty and possessed
a great sense of humor. Hc was called “George”
by his students and a “great physiologist” by medical men
on two continents. He owned a copy of Dr. Paul White’s '
first book Heart Disease (1 931); I have it with his (Bachniann's)
signature on the first page.
He retired from Emory in 1947 at the age of 70, but
continued to practice medicine for a number of years. He
died at Emory University Hospital in November 1959.
