Biography

John Adam Lake was born on 30 March 1839 in Riley Twp., Putnam County, Ohio. He and Rachel Powell were married about 1858. He and Adeline St Clair Cole were married on 27 September 1885 in Fulton County, Ohio. He died on 10 January 1921, at age 81, in Morgan County, Alabama. He was buried in Hartselle City Cemetery, Hartselle, Morgan County, Alabama.
JOHN LAKE, b. Bet. 1839 - 1840, Ohio.
Notes for JOHN LAKE:
Civil War:
John A Lake age 22, Mustered in Aug 26, 1861 (49th Reg O.V.I., Company I), at Camp Noble, Tiffin, Ohio. "Detached with Artillery from May 1 to Dec 31, 1862; captured Dec 31, 1862, at battle of Stones River, Tenn.; returned to company June 1863; mustered out with company Nov. 30, 1865; veteran."

According to John's pension file, he was in prison in VA. While a group were being marched to an exchange, a bridge across a creek collapsed, and he ended up with back injuries from several men falling on top of him. When he returned to duty, he was assigned to an artillery battery and a shell fragment hit him on the side of his head and he lost the hearing in one ear. In 1920, he had requested an increase in his pension to $100 a month. Apparently, the response was not fast enough, so he wrote another letter, saying that his grandfather had fought to free this country from Old England and he and three brothers had fought in the "recent War Between the States" and he saw no reason why he shouldn't be entitiled to the same money as the young men who had recently returned from France! John Adam Lake, born March 30, 1839, in Riley Township, Putnam County, Ohio, did serve in the civil war. He married twice, to Rachel Powell (about 1858), they had 9 children and to Adeline St Clair Cole, (Sep 27 1885)and they had 7 children.

ALEXANDER WAMSLEY
"Alexander Wamsley died at 6:30 this morning at his home in the north part
of town. The funeral will be held at the Christian Church at 2 o'clock p. m.
tomorrow, and will be in charge of Col. Jacob Smith Post G. A. R., of which
the deceased was a member. He was also a devoted and consistent member of the
Christian Church. The deceased has been more or less affecte with weak lungs
ever since his service in the army, and was drawing a small pension. About
two weeks ago he received a severe hurt from the falling of a stick of wood
striking him on the head cutting quite a gash; and from this erysipelas set in.
He also had a slight touch of the Grippe, but had gone to work afterwards,
but after the accident on his head and the erysipelas took hold of him,. his
lungs gave him great trouble--more than his physical condition could bear. He
was devoted to the G. A. R. and about the last words he said was :"Give me my
bugle and let me blow the last call. Keep up the right." He leaves a wife and
two children to mourn his loss. He will be buried in Maple Grove cemetery."

ATTENTION SOLDIERS
"The members of Col. Jacob Smith's Post G. A. R. and all old soldiers are
requested to meet at the Post room at 10 'clock a. m. tomorrow to make
arrangements for attending the funeral services of Comrade Alexander Wamsley. Also
to reassemble at 10 'clock p. m. to form a procession and attend the
services."

Biography

Gideon Beardsley was born on 22 August 1809 in Harpersfield Center, Delaware, New York. He and Ann Titus were married. He died on 18 June 1852, at age 42, in Dugway, Schoharie County, New York. He was buried in North Harpersfield Cemetery, Harpersfield, Delaware, New York.
GIDEON B. Beardsley (Gaylord Gideon Obadiah John Samuel William'),
b. Aug-. 22. 1809, about one mile north-east of
Harperslield Center, Delaware co., N. Y. ; m. (1) Ann Titus Nov. 11,
1840. and settled on a farm at North Harpersfield, where four sons
were b. to them. Mie d. Aug. 26, 1846. He often taught the District School dtiring the winter.

One incident, illustrative of his character, will be oiven. In
the fall of 1839, when the author was a lad of eight years, he ac-
companied his father to call on the minister, Rev. Arad S. Lakin.
An hour or more passed quickly. Tea was ready, and we were
cordially invited to participate. Father politely declined. His
eyes moistened when the devout minister and his little family
sat down to their frugal meal of baked potatoes and salt, and in-
voked the Divine blessing.

After the tallow candle had ceased to burn in the parsonage,
which was just across the street, a short, heavy-set man might
have been seen marching toward the "Dominie's," carrying a
heavy load of provisions, with an eight-year-old boy by his side,
equally well loaded. At the parsonage the pantry window was
gently raised, the sacks were carefully and noiseless!y placed in-
side, the window closed, when two light hearts returned home to
rest easily. On the following morning, as we were sitting down
to breakfast, the minister came hurriedly in, and after a pleasant
"good morning," picked up the family Bible and read a chapter,
then knelt and offered a most fervent prayer. All were in tears.
Without another word he replaced the dear old book and returned
to his home.

About this time my parents were converted. Father realized
a call to the work of the ministry, but feeling, like many others,
wholly unqualified for so important a work, he failed to respond.
Mother's conversion was remarkable for its clearness and spirit-
ual assurance. Years after, an aged Christian who was present,
said to the writer, "Your mother's face shone as that of an angel."
She lived her religion and taught her sons to fear God and love
the Lord Jesus Christ. Her prayers were ever ascending that her
sons might become useful ministers of the Gospel. Though she
never lived to see her prayers answered, yet two of them have
spent, combined, nearly a century in the ministry of the Word.
