Biography

Phebe ("Phebe Briggs, a bad rememberance of Joseph Woolsey.") Bailey was born about 1787 in , New York. She and Amos Halstead Woolsey were married in 1806 in , New York.1 She died between 1832 and 1840 in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio.
Her married name was Phebe ("Phebe Briggs, a bad rememberance of Joseph Woolsey.") Woolsey. Amos Woolsey (about 1784-1860), is said to have first married a Phebe Briggs. This statement is found in his son Joseph Benjamin Woolsey's biography, printed in The History of Greene and Jersey Counties, Illinois; published in 1885. Joseph died in 1881, and the statement is not attributed to anyone, although it was likely Joseph's son, George who reported it to the publishers, as he was living in Jersey County, when the book was published. Aside from this there is no other source for Amos marrying a Phebe Briggs.

But there is another possibility for Amos' wife - Joseph's mother. It was published in 1903 in the Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine. In it, is a list showing Amos Woolsey married a Phebe Bailey, whose father is Jacob Bailey and mother is Bathsheba Brush. They were from Long Island, New York, and moved to Delaware County, New York.

Only one of these statements can be correct, and to paraphrase Woolsey researcher, Wilford Whitaker, "Not all MYTHS can be proven wrong, but the preponderance of the latest evidence indicates an alternative explanation. "

Let's compare the two sources.
George Woolsey's statement: - his Grandmother was Phebe Briggs. Was this from memory? Who's, George's or Joseph's? If it was George, he was likely told by his aging Father, Joseph, because Phebe died at least forty years before, (around 1840) and George never even met his Grandmother Phebe.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine: It was actually an inquiry of Jacob Bailey in the Revolutionary War, made by H.M.G. In it the author states, (paraphrased):
Jacob Bailey of Long Island.
He was a tanner and furnished leather for the soldiers.
His wife was Bathsheba Brush.
They moved to Delaware Co., N. Y.

Their children were:
1: Hannah, married . Beardsley
2: John, married Hannah Brush
3: Freelove, married William Teed
4: Phebe, married Amos Woolsey
5: Doshea, married Benjamin Barlow
6: Polly, married Aaron Gregory
7: Nancy, married John Briggs
—H. M. G.
It wasn't too difficult to attribute it to Helen Martha Gregory, a descendant of Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey through Aaron Gregory. In the inquiry there are about eleven assertions, and though we may never know if Jacob Bailey furnished leather for the soldiers, all of the rest of the statements have proven true. Except for a couple of partial first names, it has proven 100% accurate! Further since Jacob and Bathsheba had, in addition to their one son, six daughters, whose ancestral pedigree was lost to their descendants because of losing their maiden name, it has filled in a huge gap in the genealogical record!

Who is Helen Gregory? How did she learn this? Helen Martha Gregory (1859 -1927) (Find A Grave Memorial # 12784421), is the daughter of James Orlando Gregory, a granddaughter to Aaron and Mary Bailey Gregory and great granddaughter of Jacob Bailey also a first cousin to Joseph Woolsey (once removed). Helen was a College Professor and High School History Teacher for many years and a noted member of the DAR. In fact she was a trained historian and an avid genealogist who was researching well before 1903. Her accuracy, is undeniable, as all of the seven children are proven independently, with the correct spouses and descendants.

Still not sure? Then look at information in the Census Records.

In the 1800 Census in Stamford, Delaware, New York, we find Amos' father Daniel Woolsey. Also present are Amos' uncles, William and Nicholas Halstead. About fifteen miles away in Delhi (now Bovina) are Jacob Bailey, future father in law; Abijah Gregory (Helen's Great Grandfather), father of future brother-in-law, Aaron; Daniel Beardsley, future brother in-law, as well as other Beardsleys. There are no Briggs.

By the 1810 Census, Amos and brother, Richard, had moved to Delhi. Amos and Phebe's cabin (most are described as cabins) is almost surrounded by Phebe Bailey's family - at least nine households. Amos and Phebe are only two doors away from Mary Bailey, her sister, and her husband, Aaron Gregory's cabin, and are next door to Aaron's brother, Abijah. Her parents, Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey and other Bailey descendants are also nearby, so Phebe obviously enjoyed being close to her family. But in 1810 there was only one Briggs in Delhi, a Banks Briggs, (1786-1832), whose wife was Lovisa, with one boy under 10. Also, there is a Joshua Briggs (found as Brigs) in Kortright, who's son, John B. Briggs, later married Nancy Bailey (Phebe's sister).

The 1810 Delhi Census

Household #157 Abel Beardsley - Phebe's brother in law - Daniel Beardsley's brother (Daniel married Phebe's oldest sister Hannah)
Household #164 John O. Beardsley - Phebe's brother in law - Daniel Beardsley's brother
Household #178 Joel Brush - Phebe's first cousin
Household #179 Alexander Brush - Phebe's Uncle: started Brushland, became, Bovina Center, his mother Bathsheba moved from Long Island, with him.
Household #181 John Bailey - Phebe's Brother
Household #182 Jacob Bailey - Phebe's Father
Household #212 Richard Wolsy - Amos' brother
Household #220 Abijah Gregory - Aaron's brother
Household #221 Amos Woolsy - Amos with 2 boys, 1 girl under 10 and Phebe
Household #224 Aaron Gregory - Phebe's brother in law and her sister, Mary Bailey
Household #259 William Hulsted - Amos' Uncle - his mother, Anna's Brother
Household #303 Ezra Bardsley - Husband of Phebe's first cousin, Nancy Brush
Household #369 Banks Briggs - The only one, this Banks Briggs (1786-1832) had a wife, Lovisa, and 1 boy under 10
Household #371 Joseph Tidd - Phebe's brother in law and her sister, Freelove Bailey

How could the mistake have happened? Was the name of Briggs given, from memory? Did Joseph get confused with Phebe's sister, Nancy Baily Briggs? Even though his own sister, Bathsheba Woolsey Adams, was named after their Grandmother, Bathsheba Bailey? Maybe, since according to the Joseph Woolsey bio, at about age 14 or in about 1823, he moved to Syracuse, and since his Aunt Nancy, had moved, by 1825, to Preble, Cortland County, just some 23 miles away (Nancy's daughter, Lucy was born in 1825 in Preble), he mixed up the names? Because Phebe and her sister would have kept in touch. It is quite probable that his Aunt Nancy would have traveled to Syracuse or Phebe to Preble, so the sisters could see each other and the families visit. Aunt Nancy likely attended Joseph's wedding on May 4, 1831. Then at about age 23 or 24, in 1833, Joseph moved to Illinois, and probably never saw his Aunt Nancy Bailey Briggs again. A few years later Phebe died. But the name stuck and over fifty years later, George repeated it for "The History of Greene and Jersey Counties, Illinois". Could Joseph or George have just been confused?

Compare the two possible ancestors, both from secondary sources....

For Phebe Briggs
Published in 1885
Statement made from memory?
Source: Secondary - George Woolsey?.
Researcher: None
Quality of the information: Unknown - no parents no ancestors.
Briggs in the Census? no possible Briggs

For Phebe Bailey
Published in 1903.
Statements made from research.
Source: Secondary - unknown, a family Bible and other documents?
Researcher: A trained historian and genealogist.
Quality of the information: Extremely accurate, proven with at least 110 ancestors and hundreds of descendants.
Baileys in the Census? Bailey family all around.

So, it boils down to two of Jacob and Bathsheba's Great Grandchildren, two second-cousins, which one do you believe? With Joseph's son, the Woolsey Line is dead ended at a Phebe Briggs, who can't be found anywhere except for Joseph's biography. With Helen Gregory, the Woolsey Line no longer stops at Phebe, but goes on for generations, and at least 55 pairs of Great Grandparents, not to mention, thousands of new cousins! Though there is still much to research, many of the new Woolsey ancestors are well documented and interesting too, like the Brushes of Long Island, and names like Gildersleeve, Conklin, Platt and yes Sammis too. Many even attended, along with Amos Woolsey's ancestors, the First Church of Huntington, officiated by the well known, Rev. Ebenezer Prime. With Helen Gregory's research, I find over 140 (including Woolsey), of Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey's Great Grandchildren, who can now be reconnected to their ancestors.

The preponderance of evidence does indeed, suggest an alternative explanation - it's time to fix your lines!

Amos Woolsey married Phebe Bailey.

Sincerely,
Rick Bushong

* The fourth son was named after the father's eldest brother

Source: Daughters of the American Revolution magazine
Published:1903, Volumes 23-24, an inquiry, page 151.

It wasn't too difficulty to attribute the list to Helen Martha Gregory, a descendant of Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey through Aaron Gregory. In the inquiry there are about eleven assertions, and though we may never be able to prove Jacob Bailey furnished leather for the soldiers, all of the rest of the statements have proven true. Except for a couple of partial first names, it has proven 100% accurate! Further since Jacob and Bathsheba had, in addition to the one son, six daughters whose ancestral pedigree was lost to their descendants because of losing their maiden name, it has filled in a huge gap in the genealogical record!

Who is Helen Gregory? How did she learn this? Helen Martha Gregory (1859 -1927) (Find A Grave Memorial # 12784421), is the daughter of James Orlando Gregory and great granddaughter of Jacob Bailey. Helen was a College Professor and High School History Teacher for many years and a noted member of the DAR. In fact she was a trained historian and avid genealogist who was researching well before 1903. Her accuracy, is undeniable, as all of the seven children are proven independently, with the correct spouses and descendants.

Biography

William Joseph ("Tidd") Teed/Tidd, Tidd/, was born Noted as Joseph Tidd. He and Freelove ("Bayley") Bailey/Bayley, Bayley/, were married on 12 September 1799 in Delhi, Delaware, New York.1 He died.
In the 1903 HMG inquiry, Helen M. Gregory identifies William Teed as the husband of Freelove Bailey, but no confirmation or descendants could be found. But now based on information from his son, Phillip N. Teed's 2nd marriage license, it is quite probable that William was his first name, but he went by Joseph Teed.... William Joseph Teed (or maybe Joseph William Teed).

Asside from son Phillip N. Teed's identification of Father, Joseph Teed and mother, Freelove Bayley, there is also, a (as yet unseen) WWW assertion, that a marriage license has been found, for Joseph Teed, who married a Freelove Bailey in Dehli, Delaware Co., New York on 12 Sep 1799.

....this fits.

Ancestor Sketches. Amos Woolsey 1783/4- 16 Sep 1869. by Raymond C. Adams. There is substantial circumstantial evidence to prove that Amos was the son of Daniel Woolsey (1755-1845) b Marlborouogh, NY, the son of Henry(sic) and Abigail Wright Woolsey. (sic-JLM)
Amos m (1st) Phoebe Briggs, 1806, Albany Co, NY. They are listed in the 1810 and 1820 census in Delaware Co, NY. From the biography of their son Joseph B. Woolsey, we learn that they moved to Onondaga County, NY in 1822.
Daniel's Revolutionary War Pension file tells us that in 1834 he moved to Trumbull Township, Ashtabula, OH. The census data is confusing but it appears that Phoebe was alive when the data was taken, probably before mid year. On 10 Dec 1840 Amos m (2nd) Eunice Sayles, a widow with three children. We assume Phoebe died but no record has been found of her birth or burial.
Amos died 16 Sep 1869 in Morgan County, IL. A quit claim deed entered 2 Jan 1871, reveals that six of his children with Phoebe were alive at that time. Other Woolsey researchers claim there were two other children. We assume they died before 1871. Amos had seven children with Eunice. He was age 72 when his last child was born.
Amos' grandmother (my g.g.g.g) Abigail Wright Woolsey was a most remarkable woman. In 1829 she accompanied her invalid daughter in a move by wagon to Ohio, where her daughter's husband, a Methodist minister, had gone ahead to prepare their home. Abigail was 98 years of age at the time. She did her own housework until within a week of her death at 99 plus.

---------------------------------------------------

Both Bathsheba and Nehemiah Brush, were members of the same church with Amos' second cousin, once removed, John Woolsey II. John Woolsey and Mary Sammis were married December 15 1730, in the The First Church of Huntington. Who was Amos Woolsey's first wife - Phebe Bailey or Phebe Briggs???

1. George Woolsey's statement: - his Grandmother was Phebe Briggs. Was this from memory? Who's? George's or Joseph's? If it was George, he was likely told by his aging Father, Joseph, because Phebe died at least forty years before, (around 1840) and George never even met his Grandmother Phebe.

Household #259 William Hulsted - Amos' Uncle - Anna's Brother

Maybe, since according the Joseph Woolsey bio, at about age 14 or in about 1823, he moved to Syracuse, and since his Aunt Nancy, had moved, by 1825, to Preble, Cortland County, just some 23 miles away (Nancy's daughter, Lucy was born in 1825 in Preble), he mixed up the names?

Yes, Bailey family all around.

So, it boils down to two of Jacob and Bathsheba's Great Grandchildren, which one do you believe?

Benjamin B Barlow M 24y NY. In 1789, a company, consisting of twenty heads of families and two single men, principally from Fairfield county, Connecticut, came into Delaware to examine the country and fix upon a favorable situation for a permanent settlement.

The names of the company, so far as I have been able to learn, were Josiah Patchin, Captain Abraham Gould, Colonel John Hubble, Aaron Rollins, Isaac Hubble, Talcott Gould, Isaac Gould, George Squires, Walter and Seth Lyon, John Polly, Stephen Adams, Peter and Eben Jennings, Joseph Hill, and one by the name of Gibson. The two single persons were David Gould and David Squires. 3 The journey at that period was one of imminent danger, the roads were awful beyond description, and it was frequently necessary to clear them of obstructions in order to proceed. After leaving Catskill, there was not a single bridge for their whole journey. The party, after passing several small settlements, arrived at the house of Benjamin Barlow, in Stamford, who had commenced his improvements the preceding year. He had erected a small log-hut, about twelve feet square, and also a barn, in which, as the house was too small, the party received the kind attentions of their host, while, in the absence of pasturage, the teams and horses were turned into the surrounding woods to browse. The third day after the party had arrived at Barlow's, it was discovered that the horses had strayed off in the direction of home; Abraham Gould, George Squires, and Josiah Patchin, were dispatched with three days provisions to follow up and retake the missing animals. (the story goes on)

also we find in 1794

Besides the early settlers mentioned below were, Hezekiah Davis, 1794, whose death four years later was the first death in the town; Nathan Hilton, Robert Moscript, Ebenezer W. Buckley, James Davis, Peter Scutt, William Ormiston, Samuel Ludington, James Kidzie, Andrew Chisholm, Ebenezer W. Buckley, D. Woolsey, John Lines, Benjamin Fuller, Eliphalet Jearoms, Walter Stott, John Tomlin, Benjamin Barlow and James Russell.

Biography

Aaron Gregory was born in 1788 in Fredericktown, Dutchess County, New York. He and Mary ("Polly") Bailey were married in Delaware County, New York.1 He died on 4 October 1842, at age ~54, in Harlem Twp., Winnebago County, Illinois. He was buried after 4 October 1842 in Roscoe Cemetery, Roscoe, Winnebago, Illinois.
Aaron Gregory was a farmer, tanner, miller. AARON GREGORY

Aaron Gregory was born 1788 in Fredericktown, Dutchess, New York and died October 1842 in Illinois. His father was Abijah Gregory, born 1757, and his mother was Molly Thorpe. Aaron married Mary Bailey, (born 1789; died 1861), in Delaware, New York. He was farmer, tanner, and miller, he was also butter merchant in New York City.* Roscoe, Ill., is where both are buried.

Aaron moved as a young boy to Delhi. His Father, Abijah was a noted property owner there as early as 1798, having a 38X20 log house, situated on 160 acres, that was adjoining Jacob Bailey's property.* Aaron later married Mary "Polly" Bailey, Jacob's daughter.****

Aaron owned property, 148 acres, on west bank of the West Branch of the Delaware River, one half mile from Bloomfield, Delaware County, New York. He probably was the the Aaron Gregory, who was made Ensign on July 10, 1811 in Farrington Delaware's Militia Company and Regiment. He was living in Kortright as late as 1841, when his mother, Molly Thorp Gregory died at his home on Sept. 10th 1841. Later, he moved and lived in Roscoe, Winnebago County, Illinois, where he was killed by a falling tree or was run over by a wagon.*

----------------------------------------

Died near Roscoe, Winebago County, Illinois on Oct. 4th last. Late of the
Town of Kortright, Delaware County, he was 54 years old. His death
occurred under afflicting circumstances. Last June he left his former place
of residence with a part of his family and made arrangements to move the
remainder next spring. Four days previous to the time set to commence his
journey east in attempting to stop a pair of horses running with a loaded
wagon, he received a fatal injury. The horses & wagon passed over him
and in a moment he was rendered helpless and totally insensible from his
shoulder to his extremities. In short, he had feeling only in his head, neck
and upper part of his shoulders and yet was blessed with reason. He was
injured on the 22nd of Sept. and died Oct. 4th.

Source Part Two: Delaware Gazette – 1837-1849
From the notes of John Raitt, former Delaware County Historian. A different Aaron Gregory......

AARON GREGORY was a tailor, and resided in the village of Hobart. He would go to the residences of
the farmers when they had got their cloth from the “fulling mill,” as it was then called, and cut and made a year’s clothing for the farmer and his boys, thus going from house to house. He wore a single-breasted coat with a narrow standing collar on it, and his hair was a foot or more in length, and combed back and braided and hung down behind him in a cue. He had a great dislike to cats, and one could enter the room where he was, although it was unseen, but he would instantaneously stamp, and scat! scat! scat! and spit, as though really distressed, and wherever he worked poor puss was kept out during the time. He was a taxpayer in 1815 and after, and died November 18, 1823, at the age of 71 years.

ON-LINE: Posted by Paula Schwartz 28 Jan 2002. "I am researching the possibility of Amos Woolsey having lived in Onondaga Co, NY around 1830 and having a dau named Bathshebia. I am trying to link to Bathshebia's parents, and the family of her husband who I believe owned property near Amos in NY. 31 Jan 2002. Bathshebia Woolsey b 22 Aug 1808 md a George W. Adams b 19 Apr 1807, according to the SYRACUSE REGISTER, md 2 Sep 1829. They both moved and settled in Kane, IL where they both died. She applied for pension from the Civil War. Paula H. Schwartz SUPPOSITION by www as to parents.

ON-LINE: Posted by Paula Schwartz 4 Feb 2002. "Your Amos Woolsey could be the one I'm looking for. A Bathshebia Woolsey from Onondaga, NY md a George W. Adams in 1829, according to the SYRACUSE GAZETTE. In the 1830 census an Amos Woolsey is before George W. Adams in the census order, or next door. This is why I am guessing that he could be her father. He is listed bet 40-50 and George is 20-30. Now here is the strange Part - in 1842-4 George took his family and moved to Kane, Greene, IL. Another NY name is Lucian King who had bordering property with George in Illinois. A lot of coincidences. See, I was hoping to figure out who George's parents were. They had all the children baptized at the Valley Presbyterian Church on 6 Mar 1839. Several families must
have moved there. The Adams bought property from the government. I suppose that they travelled the National Road. If you have any info about why they moved or anything it would be appreciated. Were any of the Woolseys American Indian? Thanks again for the info - your time is appreciated. .
"I have traced the Adams family to Greene and Christian co in IL. There is Charles, Philo, Joseph, James, Phoebe, Emmett, Lansing. . . . Paula Schwartz.

Today, I went to the cemetery in Cardiff, NY, hoping to find John Woolsey b. 1785, brother of Charlotte; but instead I found Henry O. Woolsey (2/14/1814--4/26/1904), stone marked 'father' and wife Sarah A. Woolsey (9/6/1817--10/3/1885) with stone marked 'mother'; and a stone marked 'brother' was Charles W. Woolsey (july 15, 1840... no other date, but the stone was low, and we felt the other date may have been buried and the ground was frozen; or the july 15, 1840 WAS a death date???) Do you have any record of who this Henry O. Woolsey was, or Charles W. ???? One other stone there was for an Augusta Woolsey (1862-1934) who was married to Albert E. BURT 1861-1943.
I then went to the Walnut Grove cemetery and did find Charlotte Woolsey & Jonathan Lownsbery's stones, right next to Angeline McClure. She was a Romer, and the granddaughter of Charlotte Woolsey Lounsbery. I did not find the grave of John Woolsey b. 1785, but will keep looking... I'll send a pic or two. Regards for now, Carole Taylor

The Connecticut Nutmegger, volume unknown, page number unknown, authors unknown:
"Another error that appears in Woolsey research and while not yet widely published, should be corrected. Some researchers contend that Henry O. Woolsey was married twice and had children by both marriages. No evidence has been located that he was, in fact, married twice
and it has been proven that all the childen of Henry's were of his marriage to Sarah (Sally) Abbot. Sarah died 1 Oct. 1883, and is buried next to Henry in the Cardiff Cemetery, Lafayette, New York. In the1900 census Henry is listed as a widower, living with his unmarried son Charles (Lafayette, Onondaga County 73/74). He died 26 Apr 1904. The vital records of Lafayette show that all known children are children of both Henry and Sally (Sarah Abbot), including Augusta, the last born."

Note from Jeff Miller:
Henry's birth year could be 1815 or 1816 based on census records.
Sarah's death I had as 1 Oct 1883; gravestone in email was 3 Oct 1885.

Joseph B. Woolsey, deceased, was born in Delaware Co., NY on the 10th day of August, 1809, his parents being Amos and Phoebe (Briggs) Woolsey. When Joseph had reached his 14th year, his parents removed to a point near Syracuse, where he was reared to manhood and finished his education. he was there united in marriage with Priscilla Ann Barber.

In 1833 Mr. and Mrs. Woolsey started for Illinois and located in what was then a wilderness, but now is the prosperous farming country of Jersey Township, Jersey Co. Mr Woolsey had come out the year before and bought 160 acres of land. On his arrival in this state in 1833, he engaged at his trade, that of a carpenter, which he continued to follow for 4 years at Kane, Greene County. At the expiration of that time he removed to his farm in Jersey township, this county, where he resided until the time of his death December 30, 1881. He was an enterprising citizen and accumulated some 600 acres of land, 160 of which is retained by his wife, the remainder having been sold and the proceeds divided among the children.

Mr. and Mrs. Woolsey were members of the Presbyterian Church, having brought their church letters from their native state. He was an upright and honorable man, kind and courteous, and all his acquaintances were his friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Woolsey were the parents of 8 children, 6 of whom were reared to manhood and 5 of whom are yet living. Names of children and their spouses given.

An offical enquiry into Sing Sing Prison

Isaac Nelson, being duly sworn, deposes and says, that he resides in the village of Sing-Sing; says that he heard Joseph Hunt say, yesterday, he did not know until about three months ago that the agent was appointed by the Inspectors, and the way he got the information was owing to a dispute arising about the appointment of agent.

Said he thought it was not necessary for him to inform himself, as Mr. Voris was here and understood it.

Said as for his part he did not know much about the management of the prison; had been an Inspector about three years. This testimony taken on the 7th day of March, 1839.

ISAAC NELSON, Jr.

Joseph B. Woolsey, being duly sworn, says, that he is one of the guard, and knows nothing improper in relation to the State Prison, or any of its affairs, or any thing relating to it.

Thomas Foster, of Sing-Sing, being duly sworn, says, that he has been employed as one of the guard at the Mount-Pleasant State Prison for several years; that he left that employment about the first of June last past; that within the last two years he frequently saw convicts at the prison endeavoring to get food, such as pieces of potatoes and fragments of meat from the swill tubs, and saw them eating what they so obtained; thinks he has seen convicts so employed four or five years ago.
