J.O. Gregory Dead; Aged 92
Pioneer And Old Time Hardware Dealer Yields To Attack Of Grip.
In Illinois 73 Years
Native of New York - Member of Court Street Church More Than Forty Years.
James O. Gregory, a real pioneer to Illinois, and an old time hardware merchant, died Monday afternoon at his home, 602 North Horsman street. Mr. Gregory suffered an attack of grip in the winter, but he rallied well for a man of his advanced years. Last Thursday he gave evidence of rapid decline. He improved Friday and Saturday, but Saturday night he sank into coma in which he continued until the end.
Mr. Gregory had passed his ninety-second year, and his well-ordered life enabled him to spend his sunset years in serenity and comfort. He was born in Bloomville, Delaware county, New York, January 4, 1821. Mr. Gregory made his first trip to the west in 1840. His first stop was at West Camp, on the Hudson, where he was a salesman in a brother's store. After a brief experience in this capacity he again resolved to follow the westward course of empire, and with his brother Harvey he came to Illinois, where he was destined to spend more than seventy years. The trip was made by way of the great lakes to Chicago. From that city Mr. Gregory traveled with a livery team to Belvidere, and from there he went to the home of Joseph Richardson, near Argyle, who had been a friend of the family in New York. Mr. Gregory knew Rockford in the days of Germanicus Kent, Daniel S. Haight and Thatcher Blake when East Rockford was the larger division of the city.
Mr. Gregory entered government land near the village of Harlem, where he resided until 1868. He then purchased an interest in a hardware store in Belvidere. His associates were his brothers-in-law, John and Charles Greenlee, an the firm name was Greenlee Brothers & Company, which did a large business in the old First National bank building on North State street. This partnership was dissolved in 1871, when Mr. Gregory disposed of his interest and removed to Rockford. In 1872 he opened a hardware store in the old Browns's half block, now occupied by the Charles V. Weise company. He continued in business twelve years, and then retired to private life.
Mr. Gregory's financial interests were not confined to the hardware trade. He was a diretor and stockholder in the Rockford Woolen mills and of the Rockford Watch company. He was also a promoter of the Chicago & Iowa railroad which is now a part of the Burlington system. In all his business affairs he was guided by the time-honored principles of integrity and prudence.
There were six sons and three daughters in the family of Mr. Gregory's father, and Mr. Gregory was the last survivor. Aaron Gregory followed his sons to Illinois in 1842, and was killed the next summer while attempting to stop a runaway.
The marriage of James O. Gregory and Janette Greenlee was solemnized April 19, 1855. Mrs. Gregory's father, John Greenlee, came from Argyleshire, Scotland, and was one of the founders of the Scotch settlement. Mrs. Gregory survives, with two daughters and one son. The children are Helen Gregory, who was for many years a teacher in the public schools at Manistee, Michigan; Elizabeth Greenlee Gregory, and Wilbur J. Gregory, a banker of Manistee. Mr. Gregory arrived in Rockford at 4 o'clock this morning. Two children are deceased.
Methodism found in Mr. Gregory a life-long supporter. He was one of the oldest members of Court Street church. He had previously been a trustee of the Methodist church in Belvidere, and one of the founders of the church in Roscoe.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the home, and interment will be in the West Side cemetery.

JAMES O. GREGORY, a retired hardware merchant of Rockford, is a native of Delaware County, N.Y. He was born in 1821, and was the fourth in a family of six sons and three daughters, but he and Jehiel, a retired druggist of St. Paul, Minn., are the only two brothers now living. The parents were Aaron and Mary (Bailey) Gregory, the former a native of the Empire State, and the latter of Connevticut. The grandfather, Abijah Gregory, was born in Connecticut and was of English descent. He married Miss Mollie Thorp and afterward removed to New York, where he died at an advanced age. His wife survived him some years and passed away at the age of eighty-seven. Both were members of the Baptist church.
The father of our subject was a farmer in early life and afterwards carried on business in New York City as a butter commission merchant. In 1842, he emigrated to Illinois, whither his sons had come the year previous, and located in Harlem Township. During the succeeding summer, he was accidently killed while trying to stop a run-away team. He was then fifty-three years of age. His wife survived him some nineteen years and died in Roscoe, Ill., at the age of seventy-two. They held membership with the Methodist Church and were a worthy and respected couple.
The subject of this sketch spent his boyhood days upon his father's farm in Delaware and Ulster Counties, N.Y., and was subsequently employed for three years as a salesman. He first came to Winnebago County when eighteen years of age, with his brother Harvey. They entered land from the Government in Harlem Township, built a small log cabin and began to make improvements, subsequently converting it into a fine farm. In 1868, however, our subject abandoned agriculture and with two brothers-in-law, John and Charles Greenlee, purchased a stock of goods and established a hardware store in Belvidere, under the firm name of Greenlee Brothers & Co. They continued business until 1871, when Mr. Gregory sold out and the following year came to Rockford. In 1873, he began business as a hardware merchant of this city on West State Street, where he carried on operations for twelve years, when he was succeeded by Mr. Van Arnham, an old settler, still engaged in that trade. Mr. Gregory is now a stockholder, and was formerly a Director, of the Rockford Woolen Mills; he also owned stock in the Rockford Watch Compny and was one of the promoters of the Chicago & Iowa Railroad, now owned by the Chicago, Burlingon & Quincy Railroad, but does now own stock in that enterprise.
Mr. Gregory was married in this county to Miss Janet Greenlee, a native of Argyleshire, Scotland, born near Campbelltown, in 1832. She is a daughter of John Greenlee, who was born at Kintyre, Argyleshire. The grandfather, George Greenlee, spent his entire life on a farm in that county and died at the advanced age of eighty years. His father, John Greenlee, reached the advanced age of ninety years. The family was one of prominence and had the coat of arms of a baron. In the fifteenth century, the ancestors emigrated from France to Scotland, and then became Presbyterians.
John Greenlee was the only son of a family of five children. He became a well-informed man and throughout his life followed faming. He married Miss Helen Brown, of the same county, and after the birth of most of their children they emigrated to America. In 1836, sailing from Liverpool to New York. They came to Illinois and purchased unbroken land on the dividing line between Winnebago and Boones Counties, in Caledonia Township. Mr. Greenlee built a log cabin and became the founder of the Scotch settlement in this community. He was very prominent in public affairs and proved himself a valued and highly-respected citizen. He did much for the development and upbuilding of the county and well deserves mention in this volume. He and his wife were among the founders, and were charter members, of the Willow Creek Presbyterian Church. Mr. Greenlee was an Abolitionist and a Republican and took an active interest in political affairs, but never sought preferment for himself. His high Christian character and sterling worth won him the love of all. He died December 30, 1883, at the age of ninety-one years and four months, leaving a host of freinds. His wife died in March, 1865, at an advanced age.
Unto Mr. and Mrs. Gregory have been born five children, but two are now deceased. John, a promising young man, was employed as a commercial traveler for a large wholesale house in Chicago at the time of his death; Mary died in childhood; Helen M. is a graduate of Rockford Seminary; Wilbur J., a graduate of the Rockford High School, and also of the classical department of the Michigan State University, was Cashier of a bank in Arapahoe, Neb. for four years and is now cashier of the Manistee County Savings Bank of Manistee, Mich.; Elizabeth Greenlee, the youngest, a graduate of the Musical Conservatory of Rockford, is now engaged in teaching music. The Gregory family is one prominent in social circles, and the young people take quite an active part in society matters. The parents are both members of the Court Street Methodist Church, and in politics, Mr. Gregory is a Republican. They reside at their pleasnat home at No. 601 N. Horsman Street, and are highly esteemed people of this city.

J.O. Gregory Dead; Aged 92
Pioneer And Old Time Hardware Dealer Yield To Attack Of Grip
In Illinois 73 years
Native of New York - Member of Court Street Church More Than Forty Years
James O. Gregory, a real pioneer in Illinois, and an old-time hardware merchant, died Monday afternoon at his home 601 North Horsman street. Mr. Gregory suffered an attack of grip in the winter, but he rallied well for a man of his advanced years. Last Thursday he gave evidence of rapid decline. He improved Friday and Saturday, but Saturday night he sank ino coma in which he continued until the end.
Mr. Gregory had passed his ninety-second year, and his well-ordered life enabled him to spend his sunset years in serenity and comfort. He was born in Bloomville, Delaware county, New York, January 4, 1821. Mr. Gregory made his first trip to the west in 1840. His first stop was at West Camp on the Hudson, where he was a salesman in a brother's store.
His associates were his brothers-in-law, John and Charles Greenlee, and the firm name was Greenlee Brothers & Company, which did a large business in the old First National bank building on North State street. This partnership was dissolved in 1871, when Mr. Gregory disposed of his interest and removed to Rockford. In 1873 he opened a hardware store in the old Browns's hall block, now occupied by the Charles V. Weise company. He continued in business twelve years, and then retired to private life.
Mr. Gregory's financial interests were not confined to the hardware trade. He was a director and stockholder in the Rockford Wollen mills and of the Rockford Watch company.
Aaron Gregory followed his sons to Illinois in 1842 and was killed the next summer while attempting to stop a runaway.
The marriage of James O. Gregory and Janette Greenlee was solemnized April 19, 1855. Mrs. Gregory's father, John Greenlee, came from Argyleshire, Scotland, and was one of the founders of the Scotch settlement. Mrs. Gregory susrvives with two daughters and one son. The children are Helen Gregory, who was for many years a teacher in the public schools at Mainistee, Michigan; Elizabeth Greenlee Gregory, and Wilbur J. Gregory, a banker of Manistee. Mr Gregory arrived in Rockford at 4 o'clock this morning. Two children are deceased.
Methodism found in Mr. Gregory a life-long supporter. He was one of the oldest members of the Court Street church. He had previously been a trustee of the Methodist church in Belvidere, and one of the founders of the church in Roscoe.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the home, and intement will be in the West Side cemetery.
