Miss Helen Marttha Gregory, 68 years old, died Wednesday morning at 2:45 o'clock at her home, 603 North Horsman street. Her health had been precarious for five years and an attack of leakage of the heart hastened her demise.
Miss Gregory was born near Roscoe Sept. 16, 1859, the daughter of James O. and Jeanette Greenlee Gregory. She had resided at the old family home at 603 North Horsman street for 55 years.
She was educated in the Rockford schools and at Rockford college, of which she was a graduate. She took post-graduate work in pedagogy at Alma college, Alma, Mich., and also post-graduate courses at the University of Chicago and University of Wisconsin, specializing in history and English literature. She taught these subjects in Charles City college, Charles City, Iowa, in Onarga seminary, Onarga, Ill., and in the high school at Manistee, Mich., where she lived 14 years.
Since early girlhood she had been a member of Court Street M.E. church. She also was a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving her are a sister, Miss Elizabeth Gregory, with whom she had been living, and a brother. W. J. Gregory, of Manistee, Mich.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home, the Rev. G.W. Stafford officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

From a 1903 DAR Magazine inquiry, trying to establish service in the Revolutionary War. No response is found.....
Jacob Bailey of Long Island.
He was a tanner and furnished leather for the soldiers.
His wife was Bathsheba Brush.
They moved to Delaware Co., N. Y.
Their children were:

This early list is obviously taken from an old family Bible or family records. The author of the "Inquiry" - HMG- is undoubtedly Helen Martha Gregory b 1859 d 1927, daughter of James Orlando Gregory and great granddaughter of Jacob Bailey. Helen was a College and High School history teacher for many years and a noted member of the DAR*. The accuracy, is undeniable, as all of the seven children are proven independently, with the correct spouses and descendants. All shown in this line. -
*Helen's Great grandfather, Abijah Gregory (b 1757 - d 1806) served in the Revolution as a private, May 25 to Sept. 23, 1775, in the10th Company, 5th Regiment, Connecticut. Militia, under Capt. Talman Read and Col. David Waterbury.

It is not certain he was 878 since the 1790 Cens. has Abijahs in Frederickstown, N.Y. (this man) and in Fairfield co., Ct.; perhaps 392 is one. Abijah, 878, lived in Trumbull, Ct., Dutchess (now Putnam) co. and Delhi tp., Delaware co., N.Y. He and Molly, 1804, conveyed Greenfield, Ct., land to David B. Thorp. Helen Martha Gregory was a History and English Literature in Onarga seminary, Onarga, Illinois. She was a History and English Literature in Charles City College, Charles City, Iowa.
