DANIEL BEARDSLEY

Daniel Beardsley was born in 1773, Litchfield County, Connecticut, his father was Benajah Beardsley and his mother was Rebecca Taylor. He married Hannah Brush Bailey (born 1776) and they had nine children.

Daniel Beardsley moved ninety-six miles from Litchfield Connecticut to Delaware County, New York, probably some time around 1794 with his father and brother, as both were there then, and settled near the town of Delhi. It was there, he met and married Hannah Brush Bailey, daughter of Jacob Bailey and Bathsheba Brush. He is noted, in early 1798 as owning an 18X18 log house, situated on 100 acres, in the mountains, along the Little Delaware River, near the Village of Delhi (first settled in the late 1780's and later called Bovina). His oldest son Barna, was born March 1797, in Delhi. Also living, in Delhi, in 1798, were his first cousin, Elijah Beardsley (son of Phineas) and his father, Benajah and brother, Abel Beardsley. *

It is through his brother that Daniel probably met Hannah Bailey, as Abel Beardsley had property adjoining Alexander Brush, who is Hannah's Uncle.

Daniel and Hannah moved to Ohio. Daniel's is noted as a First Family of Ohio, in 1803, from a land purchase, there. He may have left to build his cabin, sometime around Oct. 20, 1808, when he defaulted on a court appearance, resulting in a $63.90 judgment against him*, then as family lore states, returned for his family in November 1810.

From family lore we hear .... In the winter of 1809 Daniel with his father and eldest son, Barna, traveled over rough roads, with a team and wagon, from Delhi, Delaware County, New York, to Licking County, Ohio, locating six miles east of Newark, the county seat, on the Rock Fork of the Licking River. Here they built a double log cabin suitable for two families and made a "clearing" by grubbing out the small trees and underbrush, girdling the larger trees. Then they planted corn and potatoes, on which to live the coming winter. In August, 1810, Benajah, his father, died. Daniel returned to Delhi, New York, November 1810, for his family, and probably waited for spring to return to Ohio. **

Later, possibly in 1834, when son, Barna is noted to have moved, Daniel and Hannah moved to Hancock County. Daniel died there in August 1849. ***

On Sept 2 1850 Hannah Bailey Beardsley participated in the 1850 Census, of Liberty Township, Hancock County, Ohio. For the census, she states she was born in New York and her age is 74. But her birthday is Sept 26 1776 and it's three weeks until then, (this would make her birth year 1775?) did she just round up? At the time she was living with son Hial Beardsley and his family. Hannah died sometime after that, the date is uncertain. ****

Did Daniel Beardsley marry Hanna Brush or Hannah Bailey??

He married Hannah Bailey........
1: According to The History of Putnam County, 1880.
2: According to Annie B.Bushong, 1930.
3: According to National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution., H.M.G. inquiry, 1903.
4: According to Hannah's son Barna, who named a son Daniel Bailey Beardsley.
5: Hannah's son was named Daniel B. most probably for Bailey.
6. Hannah's son, Hiel (aka Hial, Hart) named his first born Jacob after Hannah's father Jacob Bailey.
7: They were neighbors in Delhi - Hannah Bailey and Daniel Beardsley, all most certainly met because of the proximity of her Uncle Alexander Brush's and Daniel's brother, Abel Beardsley's property.

The Hanna Brush myth began is 1903 when "Genealogical history of the Beardsley-lee family in America", the monumental (for Beardsleys) book, Published in 1903, by Isaac H. Beardsley, a great but sometimes inaccurate resource for Beardsley researchers. And it has a least one mistake.... In editing and reading the thousands of circulars he mailed out and received back, Isaac either misread the scribbled name and maiden name for Hanna Bailey, or he just made a mistake and said the Daniel Beardsley who married Hannah Brush (born 1747, our Hannah's aunt - Bathsheba's sister) was our Daniel. Or possible, since the book was published posthumously, some one else finished up the book. Even if the mistake was spotted after the book was published there was no one to make the corrections.

Then in 1951 the myth was further promoted by Nellie Beardsley Holt, in her book, "Beardsley Genealogy-The Family of William Beardsley: One of the first settlers of Stratford, Ct." She must have just accepted Isaac's mistake.

Look at the given facts and sources then choose, stay with the 107 year old mistake in Isaac's and Holt's books (both the same source) and a line that dead-ends? Or update your lines and you get some great new ancestors and lots of cousins!

There are at least twelve Daniel Beardsleys found in this line - one of them married a Hannah Brush b:1747.

About Daniel Beardsley's photograph....

There is a set of photographs of Daniel and Hannah Beardsley, they are two full-plate tintypes, approximately 6.5" X 8.5" . These are copies made of daguerreotypes taken earlier, because the "Tintype" process, was not known in Ohio until after 1854, Daniel died 1849 and Hannah about 1855.

Tintypes were first described by Adolphe-Alexandre Martin in France in 1853, later in Knox County, Ohio, Hamilton Smith, a professor at Kenyon College, patented his process February 19, 1856, although Smith's invention is usually dated as 1854.

The large pair of tintypes are a very early style, with no protective lacquer on the surface, so they were probably made around 1855 or 1856. Probably after Hannah died, with the sense of loss, a family member took in the daguerreotypes to a portrait studio to make copies, so other members could have their portraits. There is retouching on the hair and eyes done, by the photographer to add back detail lost in copying.

Somewhere, out there is the original set of daguerreotypes, and one of our descendants has it.... If it's you, I'd love to see a copy of the originals. Please email me [email protected]

There are restored copies available too.

Did Daniel Beardsley (1773-1849) marry Hannah Brush, as most WWW family lines show?
No, but a Daniel Beardsley, did marry a Hannah Brush (b:1747) but this is an Aunt to our Hannah Bailey.

Is Hannah's maiden name Brush or Bailey?

It's Bailey........
1: According to History of Putnam County Ohio 1880, H.H.Hardesty & Co., Publishers, Chicago and Toledo

Hannah Brush Bailey Beardsley lived with her son, Alfred and granddaughter, Annie B., for several years. Annie transcribed the name probably from an old bible and later in the early 1930's into the "Family Record". In the Record, it states Hannah Bailey born Sep 24 1776. was the wife of Daniel Beardsley and the mother of Alfred Beardsley. Besides, Annie B would have known her Grandmother's maiden name.

So... Brush was her mother's (Bathsheba) maiden name. Hence - Hannah Brush Bailey.

To add to the confusion, there are at least twelve Daniel Beardsleys found in this line - one, as stated, married a Hannah Brush b:1747, (our Hannah's aunt - Bathsheba's sister). And at least four other Hannah Brushs, one of whom married her first cousin, John Bailey.

Hannah Bailey Beardsley's grandparents - Nehemiah Brush and Bathsheba Brush....

Of Bathsheba and Nehemiah Brush's descendants.........

1: One of her daughters married a Daniel Beardsley......
Hannah Brush (b 1747 d ?) married Daniel Beardsley (b? d?).
2: Two of her granddaughters married Beardsley cousins.....
Nancy Brush (b 1784 d 1818) spouse: Ezra Beardsley (b 1781 d 1842).
Hanna Brush Bailey (b 1776 d 1855), spouse: Daniel Beardsley (b 1773 d 1849).
3: Two grandchildren (first cousins) married,.....
Hannah Brush (b:Jan 29 1782 d:Mar 1 1862) spouse: John Bailey (b? d?).

Bathsheba Brush Bailey's brother, Alexander Brush came to Bovina in 1794 from Flatbush, Long Island, NY
Brushland (now Bovina) was named for him. Their Mother, Bathsheba Brush's husband, Nehemiah, died in 1786, and in his will he stipulated that his wife, Bathsheba was to stay with Alexander and he was to take care of her, so she probably moved there with of her children, including daughter Bathsheba and her husband, Jacob Bailey, shortly after 1794. She died there in Delhi, (later called Bovina) in 1803.

The HMG Inquiry (paraphrased)

From a 1903 DAR Magazine inquiry, trying to establish service in the Revolutionary War. No response is found.....

Jacob Bailey of Long Island.
He was a tanner and furnished leather for the soldiers.
His wife was Bathsheba Brush.
They moved to Delaware Co., N. Y.

Their children were:
1: Hannah, married . Beardsley
2:John, married Hannah Brush
3: Freelove, married William Teed
4: Phebe, married Amos Woolsey
5: Doshea, married Benjamin Barlow
6: Polly, married Aaron Gregory
7: Nancy, married John Briggs
—H. M. G.

Source: Daughters of the American Revolution magazine
Published:1903, Volumes 23-24, an inquiry, page 151.

It wasn't too difficulty to attribute the list to Helen Martha Gregory, a descendant of Jacob and Bathsheba Bailey through Aaron Gregory. In the inquiry there are about eleven assertions, and though we may never be able to prove Jacob Bailey furnished leather for the soldiers, all of the rest of the statements have proven true. Except for a couple of partial first names, it has proven 100% accurate! Further since Jacob and Bathsheba had, in addition to the one son, six daughters whose ancestral pedigree was lost to their descendants because of losing their maiden name, it has filled in a huge gap in the genealogical record!

Who is Helen Gregory? How did she learn this? Helen Martha Gregory (1859 -1927) (Find A Grave Memorial # 12784421), is the daughter of James Orlando Gregory and great granddaughter of Jacob Bailey. Helen was a College Professor and High School History Teacher for many years and a noted member of the DAR. In fact she was a trained historian and avid genealogist who was researching well before 1903. Her accuracy, is undeniable, as all of the seven children are proven independently, with the correct spouses and descendants.

The Bovina of 1995 was formed from parts of Delhi, Stamford, and Middletown by an act of the state legislature on February 25, 1820. The name, Bovina, comes from the Latin word bovinus, meaning cattle. It was suggested by Gen. Erastus Root because it was a pioneer town in the dairy industry. The area known as Bovina lay first in Albany County. Later, it was Ulster County, and finally, in 1797 became part of Delaware County. Orlando M. Beardsley, "Ohio, Marriages, 1800-1958"

Mr. Orland Beardsley of Virginia township, died on the 6th. He was an old resident of the township and a very old man having been in the first year of the century, when the first John Adams was President. He had lived through the stirring event of three war, had seen the coming of the steam boat, the railroad, the telegraph, had noted the gradual extinction of the Indian, and the liberation of the slave. There are but few living here to remind us of the good old time in the beginning of the century. We have a few yet, however, among them old Uncle Johnnie Chalfant, Mr. Joseph Crout, and Mr. Thomas Hardesty, who were born before Washington died. Mr. Beardsley was a very jovial man who feared nothing, not even the King of Terror. He was noted for his jokes and joviality through life, and even in death he said, "these doctors don't know how to doctor a Yankee, the can't even tell what is the matter with one." He always prided himself on being a Yankee. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Roberts at Chalfant's church on the 11th and were largely attended. Orlando M. Beardsley
