I like the Household department very much. My papa was in the war four years. He belonged to Company D, 21st Regiment, O. V. V. I. He likes to read the letters from the old soldiers. We moved here from Ohio a year ago last September. We have Union and ex-Confederate neighbors, and like both. The people here are great lovers of flowers, especially house plants. Many of them have "pits", with sash covers to keep them in through the cold weather; they bloom all winter, and are more healthy than if kept in the house all the time. I have some I brought from Ohio that I prize very highly on account of associations connected with them. Some of these and some of the plants I have gotten since we came here are infested with small white worms at the roots. Will some one who knows please tell me a remedy.

Joseph H Bushong's Obituary

J.H. Bushong Dead---The announcement of the death of Mr. Joseph H. Bushong, which
occurred at his residence three miles west of Sweetwater, Tuesday night, at twelve o'clock, was
received with much surprise, and with sincere sorrow, by his many friends in this community.
Very few had even heard of his illness, which was of short duration, and to the members of his
family, the end came with a suddenness and force impossible to realize. The cause of his death
was peritonitis.
Deceased was born in Ohio and removed to Tennessee about fifteen years ago, and has since
been engaged in farming. He was a man of great industry, good habits and sound judgment. In all
his dealings he was governed by just and honorable principles. He was a member of the
Cumberland Presbyterian church at Small's, McMinn County.
He leaves a devoted wife and seven children, four sons and three daughters, besides a large
circle of relatives and friends, in this and other states, who will be deeply grieved on account of
his death. Two of his sons, Joe and Charles are in Ohio, and will not reach here for the funeral
services, which will be held this morning at County Line. Rev. M.A. Hunt will conduct the
services at nine o'clock, after which the interment will take place in the County Line Cemetery.
We join with the community in the general sorrow felt over his death.

Joseph H Bushong was the son of James S and Drusilla Stout Bushong, born 1844 in Columbus Grove, Putnam County Ohio.

August 26, 1861, during the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in Co. D of the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was captured in The Battle of Stones River, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The battle was the 21st Ohio's seventh engagement, beginning Dec 31 1862. On the morning of the first day of battle, as the Union right wing defenses were over-run and collapsed, Joseph and twenty-five other men from the 21st Ohio were captured. That night, out in the cold sleeting rain, Joseph was penned up with the other prisoners of war, but on New Year's day, 1863, he was "paroled on the field", by the Confederates. This obligated him, not to fight for one year. Others captured were not so lucky, Joseph's company sergeant, Alexander G. Anderson (also from Putnam County) was sent to the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Sgt Anderson survived and was later exchanged, but a full 38% of those in captivity perished. In the 21st Ohio, for the battle, along with the twenty-six captured, there were twenty-four killed one hundred and nine wounded. Joseph's cousin Cpl. William Bunn, was shot in the leg, he survived and rejoined the regiment. After spending a year of non-combatant duty, Joseph rejoined the regiment and participated, in General Sherman's infamous March to the Sea. Joseph was mustered out, with his regiment July 25, 1865 at Columbus Ohio.

Following the war, Joseph used part of the four hundred dollar bounty, received for his 1864 reenlistment, and bought a seventy five acre farm near Columbus Grove. On August 30, 1866, thirteen months after his discharge, Joseph married Anna J. Beardsley, in Findlay, Putnam County, Ohio. Anna was born January 17, 1845 in Putnam County. Her parents were Charles Alfred and Margaret Simpson Beardsley. Joseph and Annie had seven children together.

Often thinking of the beautiful and fertile land, he had seen and fought on, in Tennessee, Joseph and Annie moved by train, from Ohio to McMinn County, Tennessee, on September 26, 1882, where they bought a farm, just south of Sweetwater. Here, they farmed and lived, and daughter, Annie Frank and son Benjamin H. were born.

Joseph died in 1900, almost as a direct result of waving the flag, when he re-aggravated a war injury, hoisting a large sapling with a flag, for troops on a passing train, returning from the Spanish American War. A session later, behind the plow, was the final straw, and Joseph Hill Bushong was laid to rest in the County Line Cemetery, July 12 1900.

She was possessed of a remarkable intellect and was liked for her saintly character and gentleness. As the end of her long life drew near she gave explicit directions regarding her funeral and burial. She requested that her old neighbors send to her funeral, only home grown flowers and the request was complied with in every way.

Homeobox protein Hox-D13 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HOXD13 gene.[1][2][3]

This gene belongs to the homeobox family of genes. The homeobox genes encode a highly conserved family of transcription factors that play an important role in morphogenesis in all multicellular organisms. Mammals possess four similar homeobox gene clusters, HOXA, HOXB, HOXC and HOXD, located on different chromosomes, consisting of 9 to 11 genes arranged in tandem. This gene is one of several homeobox HOXD genes located in a cluster on chromosome 2. Deletions that remove the entire HOXD gene cluster or the 5' end of this cluster have been associated with severe limb and genital abnormalities. Mutations in this particular gene cause synpolydactyly and Brachydactyly.[3] The product of the mouse Hoxd13 gene plays a role in axial skeleton development and forelimb morphogenesis.[4]

Summary

This syndrome is characterised by the association of arthropathy of interphalangeal, metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints with brachydactyly of the middle and distal phalanges. It has been described in numerous members from five generations of one large family. Inheritance is autosomal dominant.

This article is about a type of chromosome. For the ancestral discovery method using autosomal DNA, see Genealogical DNA test#Geographic origin tests.

An autosome is a chromosome that is not an allosome.[1] (An allosome is also called a sex chromosome). For example, typically in humans there are 22 pairs of autosomes and one allosome pair.

A supernumerary kidney is an additional kidney to the number usually present in an organism. This often develops as the result of splitting of the nephrogenic blastema, or from separate metanephric blastemas into which partially or completely reduplicated ureteral stalks enter to form separate capsulated kidneys; in some cases the separation of the reduplicated organ is incomplete (fused supernumerary kidney).
----------------------

Supernumerary kidney is an extremely rare renal anomaly, which affects both males and females equally. Lynn P-H introduced our guest speaker, Colonel Richard Bushong of the 390th Bomb Squadron Memorial Museum. Col. Bushong is USAF retired, a former pilot of B17s during WWII.

Colonel Bushong gave a lively, detailed recap of his service during WWII. When he entered the war, he started as GS0 and had secret clearance. To get the clearance, he was investigated by FBI, including questioning his mother. His job was to deliver classified materials to chiefs of staff of the air command. Encouraged to take the cadet exam at Patterson field, he passed, was sworn in at Patterson and informed “you are now a private in the Army”. He had to quit his job, was paid $21/month, went to the aviation cadet’s program, and graduated July 1943.

During basic flight training, his group was lined up in single line by height. Four squadrons were formed, the “little ones” sent to fly fighter planes and the taller to fly the twin engine bombers. He requested a B17. There were 35 crews trained together in Washington and they subsequently boarded Queen Elizabeth to Scotland. This luxury liner had been converted to a troop ship with 17,000 on board. His “luxury” quarters were a stateroom intended for 1-2 with 18 stacked in bunks. They ate two meals a day when told, no matter what time of day it was.

Today, Bushong is the “only 390th guy left” working at the Museum. On arrival at the base in England, Bushong took sick and was sent to the hospital. When he returned to his to hut on Christmas Eve, where there should have been 11 of his crew, he found bunks rolled up because the crew had been shot down while he was in hospital. His first escape.

His second crew was a daylight precision bombing crew, which meant that you were bombing when all the enemy fighters were in air. He flew “Dolly” on his first 7 missions. There were several targets, hit several times. The intent was to bomb something adjacent to the cities, not the cities themselves, factories usually. On the Brunswick raid, 60 bombers were lost. The 8th AF had been recalled, so he stayed behind, but some didn’t get the word and went on.

After 7 missions he was given a three-day pass to London. When he came back, “Dolly” had been used by another crew and shot down. His second escape.

He continued to fly several other planes during WWII. In February 1944, he flew as part of “The Big Week,” 7 days in a row that the 8th AF was to fly. During that time, 3 missions were scrubbed before they left. On the 7th day, his commander told them they were wearing down the Luftwaffe. On that day, the 390th shot down 62 enemy planes, having 18 planes up, 8 of which were lost.

Guerig had said they would never get to Berlin but they did. They destroyed factories therel On March 6, 800 bombers launched and 775 got to continent coast. The stream of bombers was 94 miles (in groups) long going into Berlin. German fighters couldn’t protect the whole thing. On that day, the 390th encountered 600 enemy fighters going in and out.

By his 18th mission, they were running out of crews. Though originally slated to fly 26 missions, he was extended to fly 28 missions – he became a first pilot at age 21. Of 35 crews that went in when he did, 12.5 returned. Two-thirds of the crews were shot down, one half of the troops died.

During his time in the 8th AF, Bushong flew seven planes in combat – of these, six were shot down and crews lost or taken prisoner – Dolly, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Glory Ann, Geronimo, Wild Children, Bell of the Ball. ”It was just pure luck to survive there.”

When WWII ended, Bushong was sent to California, to McClelland, to duty in the separation center – discharging returning Veterans. He left active duty, but stayed in the Reserve and flew monthly and 2 weeks in summer.

Bushong was recalled for Korea, went to Alaska, Cape Cod, and HQ in Colorado Springs. With a regular commission, he stayed for career, served in Japan for three years, Nellis AFB in Nevada, and finally in Vietnam for a year as a commander. During his service, he flew 43 types of planes.

It was a pleasure to follow the stories of WWII as told by Colonel Bushong – the perfect program to Salute Veterans on this day.

[lamont 2.GED]

June 3, 1646, Clan Lamont (pronounced Lamb-it) having been under siege by Clan Campbell in its two castles, Toward and Ascog. signed a peace treaty that guaranteed the Lamonts safe passage from the castles. But when the castle gates were thrown open to admit the Campbells, a massacre ensued. Numbers differ on how many Lamonts died that day, but researchers believe as many as 350 Lamont men died and uncounted women and children. Three dozen Lamont clan leaders, were hanged in a tree in the old churchyard that to this day is called Gallows Hill for that event. These men were leaders or sonsof leaders of Lamont family groups or septs. John Lamont, son of Gilbert Lamont, Baron McGorrie, of Inverchaolain, was one of the 36 men hanged in the tree in the churchyard, along with his brother Duncan. Mary Young Lamont fled with her four sons across the 39 miles of ocean from Scotland to a town called Larne in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Those who survived the massacre or were somehow able to get away from the Campbells sought any safe haven they could find. It was common practice by these refugees to change their surnames when they reached safety, fearing that the Campbells would search them down. Mary Young Lamont's four sons changed their names. John, the oldest, took the name Sitlington, which was the name of a "burn" or small stream on their Scotland estates. The two middlesons took the names White and Green. It has been stated that the White son may have been named William. The youngest son, Andrew, took his mother's maiden name of Young for his new surname. It is assumed that all four boys were young children because if they had been teens or older, they would have been fighting with their father and not left behind with their mother.

Our Lamont family remained in County Antrim and never returned to Scotland. Brothers John Sitlington and Andrew Young, along with their sons and grandsons, ran a successful agricultural and linen manufacturing business four miles west of Larne for 90+ years, when they migrated to Augusta Co., VA. The linen mill and John's and Andrew's homes were still standing in the 1960's, in good conditionand being used. The linen mill has since had its roof fall in but the stone walls still stand. Amazingly, in the 1920's, both homes were still occupied by descendants of the families who purchased them from the Sitlington and Young families when they migrated to America. We have Irish genealogist Mary Semple, who was a relative through Sir James Lamont's mother, who was also a Semple, to thank forgiving us the story of this Young family back in the 1920's. This Scots/Irish Young family was devoted Presbyterian

Sir John, the 14th chief, at that time received a letter from Montrose stating he was commanded by King Charles II who had placed himself in the hands of the Scots Army of the Covenant, then in England, to lay down his arms and he was ordering John to do the same. This was no easy decision for Lamont as the castle was under attack by a large force of Campbells thirsting for revenge for the part the Lamonts had played in the Royalist campaign of terror in Argyll. Campbell of Ardlinglas, the commander of the attacking force, incidentally, was the brother of Lady Lamont. Most of the cadets of the Campbells were represented among it's officers and the Rev. Colin MacLachlan, minister of Lochgoilhead was there in the role of the chosen instrument of divine vengeance. After a fortnight, with the Lamonts cut off by land and sea, the Campbells brought up cannon and bombarded the castle for 3 days. Sir John agreed to parlay and signed a capitulation which guaranteed that he, his brothers, soldiers, wives and children would be allowed to go free with their baggage. The ink was scarcely dry when the Campbells with the excuse, "no capitulations should be kept with traitors to God and his covenant" seized and bound the garrison, ill-treated and killed 36 women and children, pillaged and burned the house and it's plantations. The men and boys were taken to Dunoon where 200 of then were slaughtered and the surviving women and children were carried away in boats to beg or starve. The chief's sister, Isobel, stripped to her shift by the covenant soldiery, managed to hide her brother's copy of the surrender document with the signatures in the coils of her hair. The Marquis of Argyll was executed in 1661 with the massacre of Toward being one of his charges.

. It was built in the 12th century, and Mary Stuartis said to have stayed in it for a short while. On Tom-a-Mhoid Road, in West Bay, is theLamont Memorial, erected in 1906 tocommemorate the massacre of the Lamontsby the Campbells in 1646.

The memorial was placed near the spot where so many met their deaths. It can be found near the southern limits of Dunoon, adjacent to route A-815. It is located on the left when headed south, raised above the road, in a small park. Because of it's high location, it is easy to miss, so look sharp. It's weight of over three tons, caused the lorry that was transporting it to Dunoon, to break down, and it finished the trip by ship. The unveiling was done by Chief John Henry Lamount, on September 29, and the principle address was given by Rev. John Lamond. Sir John Lamont had person sources.1

Biography

Mary Young was born in 1623 in Auldbar, Forfarshire, Scotland.1 She and Sir John Lamont were married in 1639.2 She died.
After the massacre on June 3, 1646 at Toward "Mary Young Lamont fled with her four sons across the 39 miles of ocean from Scotland to a town called Larne in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Those whosurvived the massacre or were somehow able to get away from the Campbells sought any safe haven they could find. While no connection has yet been found between Mary and the Young Clan of Auldbar, the following from "A Short History of the Youngs of Scotland" is of interest: "Next to the Border, the highest concentration of Youngs in Scotland was in the Northeast. The Northeast was much more feudal than the Border and it is here that we find Youngs recorded as sheriffs, barons, academics and military leaders. It is here as well, that we find them residing in some of the most beautiful castles in Scotland, such as Durris, Kelly, Auldbar and Mergie.

"The first recorded Young in the Northeast was John Young, of Strachan, in Kincardineshire in the year 1325. A few years later we find mention of William Young of Ochterlony, near of Forfar, who perished in the Battle of Glascune. The Sheriff was warned of 'Thre hundyr, or ma, Hyeland-men' coming to ravage the lands of Angus. Here at Glascune, William and other Angus lairds met the Highlanders ina battle that was so fiercely fought that it is mentioned in the works of Sir Walter Scott.

"After the demise of the Border Clan, the family of the Barons of Auldbar became accepted by many as the chiefly line of the name Young, although not the head of any clan. Of their origins we know that they held property around the town of Forfar, and in 1603, they were said to have been in possession of this land 'past memory of man'.

"Probably the most notable of this family was Sir Peter Young I, born in 1544. Sir Peter held a number of positions with King James VI. He started as the King's tutor and eventually became an ambassador to various European countries, including Denmark where, in 1587, he made arrangements for the King's marriage to Anne, a Danish Princess. Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth of England, Peter traveled south with King James when, in 1603, he assumed the English throne. The next year Peter was knighted by the King at Whitehall, into the Order of the Garter. Sir Peter's portrait is displayed in National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.

"Sir Peter's grandson purchased the Barony of Auldbar, near Brechin, in the year 1670. This purchase made him and his heirs, the Barons of Auldbar. This family of Youngs resided here for another three generations until this line ended and the estate was sold in 1753. Since this time the chiefship of the Youngs has been vacant." George Young posts the following: "Mary Young Lamont's four sons changed their names. The youngest son, Andrew, took his mother's maiden name of Young for his new surname. It is assumed that all fourboys were young children because if they had been teens or older, they would have been fighting with their father and not left behind with their mother.

"Andrew married Mary a descendent of Adair's of Kinhilt, Galloway, Scotland. He took the name of Young, his Mother's Clan. He and his brother John (Lamont) Sitlington, farmed and manufactured linen onthe Larne river in Antrim County, North Ireland."

Sharon Young Jebavy posts the following: "John Young (Andrew Lamont Young, Sir John Lamont) m. Annie Houston in County Antrim before 1695. He is the only known son of Andrew and Mary Adair Young, butthere were probably others. Possible siblings for John include: James, Robert, Matthew, Charles and William, as found in the Carmoney Church records in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. There were possibly others. Many Youngs still live in the Larne area who probably descend from Andrew Young." Andrew Lamont ("Andrew Lamont") Young had person sources.3

Biography

Mary Adair was born about 1650 in Ballyclare, County Antrim, Ireland.1 She and Andrew Lamont ("Andrew Lamont") Young were married in 1670 in County Antrim, Ireland. She died in County Antrim, Ireland.1
From "My Clan": "The origin of this Gaelic name appears to be a variation of Edzaer and the first of the name is generally believed to have been a son of Duvenald, a leader at the Battle of the Standard in 1138 and grandson of Donegal of Morton Castle, a descendent of whose had a charter from Robert the Bruce of the lands of Kildonan.

"Sir Andrew Agnew states, in his work on the hereditary sheriffs of Galloway, that in the Lochnaw charter chest various deeds prove the name Edzaer and Adair to have been interchangeable with the Galloway Adairs.

"In a charter dated 1625 the name is spelt in both forms on the same page. Many of the Galloway Adairs went to Ulster during the time of the Elizabethan Plantation and settled mainly in County Antrim.

"One Patrick Adair who settled in Antrim around 1641 became famous as the author of a major work on the rise of the presbyterian church in Ireland."

Some on-line researchers show Mary as the daugter of Patrick but the connection is weak. Mary Adair had person sources.1
