Adam ("Adam Linehart, Adam Lynhart") Lenhart
M, #1056, b. 26 February 1814, d. 6 August 1886
Parents
Biography
Adam ("Adam Linehart, Adam Lynhart") Lenhart was born on 26 February 1814 in Wingen-sur-Moder, Departement du Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. He and
Mathilda ("Tildie") Barbee were married on 11 May 1841 in Shelby County, Ohio. He and
Katherina ("Katherna") Dietz were married on 21 November 1853 in Shelby County, Ohio. He died on 6 August 1886, at age 72, in Jackson, Shelby County, Ohio. He was buried in Saint Lawrence Cemetery, Botkins, Shelby County, Ohio.
Photograph available. The Rick Bushong Collection.
Cause of Death: Stomach Cancer
Religion: Catholic
Nickname: Adam Linehart, Adam Lynhart
Adam emigrated by 16 Aug 1816, when he was 2 or 3 years old, from Eisenburg, Germany to Pennsylvania. Perhaps the family left the border region of Alsace-Lorraine to escape the young men from being drafted into Napoleon III's army.
On September 25, 1845 - Adam Lenhart paid $150 to Peter and Melvina Miller for the following land: Lot #10 in New Palestine, Green Township, OH (near Tawawa) located on the extreme SE edge of Shelby County near Miami County. (There is no mention of Matilda in this land record although they were married in 1841.)
In the 1850 Federal Census, the value of Adam's land is recorded at $300 and Adam stated that he is a farmer from France, that his wife, Matilda, is the same age as he, but born in Ohio. This is the first census to list a wife and the first time children's names appear on a census. There are five children listed, including Adam (Jr.), who was two years old in 1850.
May 1857 - Copy of affidavit* sworn by Adam Lenhart (Lehanhart) at the court, which reads as follows: "Native of France and subject to Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France, the above named AdamLehanhart appeared before one Samuel McConan?, Clerk of Court of Common Pleas within and for the County of Shelby and State of Ohio who made solemn oath it was his bona fide intention to become a citizen of the United States of America that he will ____ renounce all allegiance to every foreign Prince, Potentate, Sovereignty and particularly to Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France. Thereupon his first certificate was issued the 29 day of May 1857. Signed, ___Clerk, ____, Deputy" (*a photocopy of the above affidavit is in photo album #1 along with a letter from Marie Luise Lenhart datedJune 1985.)
Note: Napoleon Bonaparte III reigned over Eisenberg, France (Pfaltz) from 1852 to 1870. This Napoleon was defeated by Prussia in the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War.
In 1859 Adam paid $80 for 49 acres of land, possibly purchased from someone named Daure (this record not clear). This land is located in Jackson Township and was recorded in the tax record as SectionRTS 7E/6S/31, which is on the extreme northern edge of Shelby County. Adam paid .66 for road taxes this year, as well as $1.05 for general tax.
In the 1860 Federal Census, it states that Adam's real estate is valued at $1,800, and again states that he was born in France (P. 396). An 1860 map, located at the Sidney County library on the wall halfway up the steps to the second floor, shows Adam's land. (People who owned the land on either side of Adam's property declared that they were from the region of Baden. From this, it's probably reasonable to figure that Adam was also from Baden.)
On September 3, 1861 Adam purchased Lot 474 in the town of Wapakoneta from Michael and Mary Grusi for $32.50. This is recorded in Book 1, Vol. 19, Pg. 378.
On June 20, 1862, Adam paid $600 for an additional 49 acres of land to the heirs of J. Merrimon (Merryman), alias John Scherter. It was signed by John Jacob Voegelin and Rosina Barbara Voegelin and others. (These heirs came from the Grand Duchy of Baden.) The record states that Adam already owned the N1/2 and SE 1/4 of 640 acres of land.
On September 24, 1862 Adam Lenhart purchased 93 acres from John Frey for $100, recorded in Book 1, Vol. 20, Pg. 135. The land is described as follows: Auglaize County, east half of the northwest quarter of Section 26. Town six south of range seven east, containing 64 acres, also the south fractional part of the northwest fractional quarter, Section 26, town 6 south of range 7 east, containing 29 and 83/100 acres, more or less.
On September 24, 1862 Adam also purchased (for $100) another 80 acres from John Frey, which is recorded in Book 1, Vol. 20, page 135-136, and described as follows: Auglaize Co., east half of the northwest quarter of Section 29, Town 6, south of range 7 east.
On February 27, 1863, Adam and Catharina Lenhart sold to Nicholas Frey the following: Auglaize Co., Township of Clay, undivided 1/5 part of the east half of the northwest quarter of Section 29, town 6, south of range 7, east, 80 acres for the sum of $200. Recorded in Book 1, Vol 20, pages 324-325. (for a profit of $100)
On February 27, 1863, Adam and Catharina also sold to Nicholas Frey the following: Auglaize Co., Township of Clay, the east half of the northwest quarter of Section 26, town 6, south of range 7 east, containing 64 acres, also the south fractional part of northwest fractional quarter Section 26, town 6, south of range 7, east containing 29 86/100 acres for the some of $400. Recorded in Book 1, Vol20, pages 325-326. (for a profit of $300)
On November 18, 1867, Adam and Catharine Lenhart of Shelby Co. sold the following to Henry Keller/Heller: Lot #484 in the town of Wapakoneta, Auglaize Co., OH for the sum of $200. Recorded in Book 1,Vol 25, page 414. (for a profit of $167.50)

1886 - Below is Adam's Obituary published August 12, 1886 in the Auglaize Republican:
"Died. - Adam Lenhart, Sr., at his residence 4 1/2 miles S.E. of Freyburg, on last Friday evening, at 5 P.M., aged 72 years 5 months and 9 days.
When a boy quite young he came from Wengau, Germany, and landed at New York without a friend in the United States. From thence he went to Palestine, O., where he worked by the month for a year, afterwhich he entered a section of government land [in Clay Twp., Auglaize Co., OH] and erected a little log hut. Soon after he took unto himself a better half to partake of the bitter and sweet of this newly settled country. They lived happily through toil and care, and were blessed with 3 children, soon to become motherless, and he to mourn the loss of his beloved wife. He shortly after took unto himself a second mate who remained by him unto his death. They were also blessed with a full dozen of children, and 32 grandchildren to mourn his loss. He has lived in our vicinity for the last 40 years.
He was a good neighbor and always ready to lend a helping hand to the needful.
About 7 years ago he visited the land of his birth. He safely made the journey there and back in 20 days, feeling very much fatigued. About a year ago he commenced complaining with trouble of his stomach, and for the last 60 days was entirely unable to eat a meal, living wholly from wine and soups.
His remains were interred in the cemetery at Rina, O., last Sabbath at 2 o'clock P.M. Rev. Eylerman officiating. He leaves many friends and relatives to mourn his loss."

Wife were married. He died in.
Immigrated 16 AUG 1816 Eisenburg, Germany > Pennsylvania, USA; the family sailed on the ship Borderschap
The following information was received from Laura Agnes Lenhart Fisher in 2002.
THE LENHART FAMILY
Early Family History...
A 48-year-old man and his family from Eisenburg, Germany set sail on the ship Borderschap. They landed in America on or before August 16, 1816. 12 years later this German immigrant, then age 60, signed his naturalization papers to become a citizen of the United States. He signed these papers in New Philadelphia [Tuscarawas County], Ohio. His name was John LENHART. John and his family lived in Pennsylvania.
Adam, one of John's sons, left Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio. He homesteaded on a farm in Shelby County on the Montra-Pasco Road. He married Matilda [Barbee]. They had three children. At the age of 34, Matilda died. She is buried at St. John's [actually St. Jacob] Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jackson Township. Adam married Catherine Dietz of Botkins and started a second family. At that time the Lenhart family became Catholic.
John, a son from the first marriage, grew up in the Jackson Center area. He married Magdalena Reinhart from Auglaize County. They lived in a log house west of Jackson Center. They had 10 children.
Lenharts on the Move...
Jacob William Lenhart was one of these 10 children. He was born June 6, 1882. He married Ersa Aleatha Crothers who was born October 1, 1883. Jake and Ersa, in the early years of their marriage, livedon a farm close to Botkins. Later they moved east of Jackson Center near Bloome Center. They had nine children: Vergil, Lauren, Nora, Carl, Frank, Fred, Dorothy, Agnes and Mary.
In 1933, they purchased land in Logan County. They had a public auction and moved to Belle Center, Ohio. Six years later, Jake passed away leaving Ersa a widow with four children still at home.
In 1943, Frank Lenhart left Ohio and moved to Arizona. Later Vergil and his family followed. Carl moved his family to Arizona in 1857, and Mary and her family joined them later. At one time there werefour of the nine Lenhart children living in Arizona, as well as an uncle, Charlie Lenhart, and a cousin, Hubert Lenhart.
Vergil later moved to Oklahoma, while Mary and her family returned to Ohio.
Marriage and Children...
Nora married Guilford Carnes and had two children, Jennie Marie and Milan Guilford. She had four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Lauren lived all his life on a farm in Jackson Center, Ohio. He married Avanelle Ambos. They had four children: Doris Ann, Bill, Janet and John. They had nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Fred married Ruth Terrill. They have two children: Nancy and Cindy and four grandchildren. They live on the family farm in Logan County.
Agnes married Dwight Fisher. They have three children: Paul, Jane and David. They reside in Westerville, Ohio. They have seven grandchildren.
Dorothy married Victor Sullivan and lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. They had three children: Tom, Wanda and John David and three grandchildren.
Mary married Jay Hastings and they had three boys: Philip, Howard and Keith. At the time of her passing, she lived on a dairy farm in Hardin County. There are two grandchildren.
Carl and Frank still live in Arizona. Carl has one daughter, Amy, and five sons: Jim, Don, David, Chuck and Dick. He has six grandchildren. We helped Carl celebrate his 75th birthday three years ago.
Frank has one daughter, Joyce, and three sons: Ken, Dennis and Eldon and 10 grandchildren.
Together, the nine Lenhart children have produced 29 children, numerous grandchildren and still more numerous great grandchildren.
In the 176 years since the Lenharts first landed in the new country, they have traveled far and wide and reproduced abundantly. ??? date of birth is close....
