When the Baptist Church in Columbia Village, Hopewell Township, NJ was orga

s. The church was held at Jonathan's home and then at other Stout homes f
or about 41 years. From first to last, half the members were Stouts - 2
00 of that name being added in those 41 years - besides all the Stout fami
ly members with other surnames. The two deacons and four elders in the fir
st church building were Stouts. Zebulon and David (grandsons of Richard St
out through Jonathan Stout) were two of it's main pillars. David liv
ed to see 117 offspring.
Jonathan Stout, the Hopewell pioneer, died in 1723, and in his will prov
ed March 25, 1723, he bequeathed to his two youngest sons, Samuel and Davi
d, (who were at that time aged 14 and 17 respectively) the tract on whi
ch Jonathan resided at the time of his death. This was the tract lying sou
th of the Col. Joseph Stout farm, now George E. Weart's, and extended sou
th about one mile along the Province line, and west to the mountain roa
d. This tract now includes the farms of P. W. Sheppard, Harry Van Dyke, Da
vid Moore, Miss Sarah Stout, Peter O. Voorhees, and the northern half at l
east of the David Stout and Amos Bond farms. The will states that these t
wo sons were left "one full equal undivided sixteenth part of a proprietar
y," and one standing on the hill near Mr. George E. Weart's dwelling and v
iewing this whole tract spread out like a panorama at his feet can but exc
laim in admiration, "What a magnificent inheritance was theirs!"

History of Stouts and Hopewell
From wiki
Other early settlers in Hopewell are said to be the Stouts, who immigrated from Holmdel to Hopewell in 1706.
On April 23, 1715, the settlers who stayed in Hopewell, most notably the Stout family, organized the Old School Baptist Church, and what is now known as Hopewell was then referred to as "Baptist Meetinghouse".
One of the most valued members of the meeting house was Declaration of Independence signer John Hart who in 1740 purchased 193 acres (0.78 km2) of land in the north of current day Hopewell, and in 1747 as a sign of Hart's devotion to the Church, donated a plot of his land to the Baptists.
The very next year the Baptists made good use of this land and in 1748 erected their Old School Baptist Church meeting house on West Broad Street. The meeting house brought in Baptists from miles around to Hopewell and encouraged Hopewell's early growth.

FatherJonathan Stout (b. 1658, d. before 25 March 1723)

Biography

Joseph Stout was born on 25 October 1686 in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He died on 22 October 1767, at age 80, in Hopewell Twp., Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
On the historic spot where the First Baptist church of Hopewell was firsto
rganized in April 23, 1715, Col. Joseph Stout had his heart set on havi
ng the first meeting house erected in 1747; it to be built on the site whe
re the church was organized. But the original site was not centrally locat
ed, and would be very inconvenient for the great majority of the congregat
ion to reach and his proposition was overwhelmingly defeated.
The old Colonel felt so humiliated at his defeat, and so indignant and dis
appointed that he resolved to build a house larger than the whole congrega
tion could build. In 1752 he carried out his resolution, and built a sto
ne mansion five feet larger each way than the meeting house, making it thi
rty-five by forty-five, with two stories and a basement, giving it a ve
ry imposing appearance from the south. In 1782, Col. Stout's son, Josep
h, offered this fine property for sale with the following advertiseme
nt as it appeared in the Trenton Gazette.
"TO BE SOLD, at public vendue, on Wednesday the 27th day of March 178
2, on the premises, a very valuable plantation on which Col. Joseph Sto
ut deceased, dwelt, now in tenure of Mr. John P. Hunt, situated in Hopewe
ll Township, Hunterdon County, containing by estimation 296 acres of go
od land, 200 or more of which are cleared, the rest well timbered and wate
red with a number of good springs, has a quantity of good mowing ground, a
nd more could be made with a little expense."
"On the premises are a large stone house two stories with nine rooms, we
ll finished, six fireplaces and a large entry through the centre."
"A cellar and a cellar kitchen, a well of excellent water at the door, a s
tone barn, and other outbuildings, an orchard of grafted fruit, apples, pe
aches, pears, cherries of the best kind, and a variety of other fruits."
"The situation is very healthy and pleasant and would suit a gentlem
an or farmer."
"The vendue will begin at twelve of the clock on said day, when attendan
ce will be given and conditions made known by Joseph Stout."

David Stout, Capt.

M, #995, b. 1706, d. about 26 December 1788

Parents

FatherJonathan Stout (b. 1658, d. before 25 March 1723)
MotherAnna Bollen (b. about 1665, d. about 1749)

Biography

David Stout, Capt., was born in 1706 in Hopewell, Hunterdon, New Jersey. He died about 26 December 1788, at age ~82.
David, the oldest of these two sons, settled on the north side of thero
ad where P. W. Sheppard now lives, and Samuel in the old house which sto
od a few yards west of the residence of Mr. Peter O. Voorhees.
Capt. David Stout, son of Jonathan the pioneer, who as stated in article n
umber 45 was left in 1722 the half share of the undivided one sixteen
th of a whole proprietary, had the farm on the north side of the road oppo
site his brother Samuel. David's tract extended from the first cross roa
ds east of Hopewell Borough to the Province line at Stoutsburg, and was bo
unded on the north by the Col. Joseph Stout tract, now occupied by Mr. Geo
rge E. Weart. It is a fact worthy of note that these two brothers had divi
ded this tract so evenly between them, that in 1753, thirty years after th
ey had inherited it, when an assessment was made to create a fund for t
he extermination of wolves and panthers, there was a difference of only se
ven pence in the amount of their assessment.
The residence of David Stout stood on the road between Hopewell and Stouts
burg, a little southeast of the present brick mansion of Peter W. Sheppar
d. The old house was the home of three generations of the family, until Da
vid Stout, Esq., grandson of the first David, built in 1822, the mansion n
ow standing.
David Stout senior was born in 1706, and in 1726, married Elizabeth Laris
on as we have stated in previous articles. Captain Nathan Stout, the auth
or of the "History of the Stout Family," was very sparing in his complimen
ts, but passes a glowing eulogy on David Stout as an honest man and a Chri
stian. In Dr. Benjamin Van Kirk's Ledgers he is called Captain David, a
nd he was doubtless a Captain with Colonial militia.
His will is dated May 28, 1779, which probably marks about the beginni
ng of his disability. The will is proved December 26, 1788, and during th
is long period he was probably a paralytic, as tradition says that he w
as unable to walk.

The passenger list for the ship Lyon 1630-1631
Information about the ship LYON in an article written about Roger Willia

Unfortunately it doesn't list any Sacketts but then again it doesn't li

In December of 1630, a small, one hundred ton boat, the "Lyon" (which beca

The Lyon
The LYON. This ship was famous in the history of the early emigration to M

mand with the regularity and safety of a ferry, and on one of them saved t
he new settlement from starvation and death by her timely arrival with pro

Husband of Rebecca. Sailed from England to Massachusetts aboard the ship 'Lyon' arriving on February 5, 1631 on the same ship as Roger Williams. The two became friends.

About 1643, John received a grant from the Dutch and established Throckmorton's Neck (today Throg's Neck, NY), but an Indian massacre forced him back to Providence.

After 1665, John bought shares in the new settlement authorized under Colonel Nicolls in the Monmouth Patent. He never lived there, but gave the land to his sons John, Jr. and Job. He died about 1684 while visiting them and was the first person buried in these grounds.
