CLINT BUSHONG
Clint B. Bushong, 90, a farmer who had lived in Ozark and Douglas
counties all of his life, died Saturday at his home at Drury.
Mr. Bushong was the son of the late William and Pricilla Amyx Bushong
and was born 8 August 1871 at Zanoni. He was married on 7 April 1901 to
Josephine Bell who survives him. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
In addition to his widow, Mr. Bushong is survived by three sons, Floyd
Othel Bushong of Brixey, and Jessie Orvil and Frank Lester Bushong of
Drury; two brothers, Math Bushong of Sycamore and Lander Bushong of West Plains;
two sisters, MRS. NETTIE SCRIBNER of Gainesville and Mrs. Mittie Price of
Tarkio, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

James Newton Bushong was born on 15 February 1873 in Missouri. He and Samantha Ann Gallatin were married on 26 July 1904 in Vinita, Craig County, Oklahoma. He died on 2 February 1960, at age 86, in Vinita, Craig County, Oklahoma. He was buried in Chelsea Cemetery, Chelsea, Rogers County, Oklahoma.

James Newton Bushong was second child of Bill & Priscilla Bushong and the only child of that family who left Missouri. James married Samantha Ann Gallatin, born in 1867 in Illinois, the daughter of Levi Gallatin & Rose Ann Fearnot, on July 26, 1904, in Vinita, Oklahoma by L.L. Thurston. They raised a son and the two daughters' of Samantha's. Not much is known of this couple other than they were members of the Church of Christ and both loved fishing.

Bushong. I have searched and searched. Yes, they were married on July 26,
1904, in Vinita, Craig County, Indian Territory Northern District
(Oklahoma) by L.L. Thurston. I have a copy of their marriage license and indeed it’s from USA Indian Territory. My husband and I have come up with a theory as to why there are no 1900 census records of James. Sometime after he
left Missouri and before marrying Samantha, James had an altercation with the
law. He shot and killed a sheriff. From that time on he moved from place
to place never settling long in one area, fearing the law would find him.
The sad part of the story is that the town’s people (name of place has been
lost to history) hated their sheriff and was glad he was dead. There was
never a warrant for James arrest. Therefore our theory is that since he
was “on-the-run” he didn’t allow himself to be enumerated in 1900. However
the next census in 1910 he was listed with his family in Delaware County,
Oklahoma." Samantha Gallatin, was thirty-six years old when she married James
Newton Bushong. Samantha had two daughters from a previous marriage, Dessie
Little born in 1888, and Delia (Dellie) Little born in 1896. (I only have
years, nothing more specific). The only indication I have so far in
reference to Samantha’s daughter’s surname being “Little” is on the back of a
family photo. James either gave Samantha’s daughter’s the Bushong name, or
he simply told the census enumerator they were his daughters, since all
the census records of the family lists all their children under surname
Bushong. This was James’ only marriage.

Funeral Services Friday for Mrs. Geneva Haney

Funeral services were conducted at Daugherty Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ed Davis for Mrs. Geneva B. Haney Friday, September 9 at 4:30 p.m. Death occurred at Horizon Manor Nursing Home Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. Mrs. Haney was born Nov. 16, 1874 at Gainesville, Mo. Her maiden name was Precilla Amex Bushong. Surviving are three sons, W.D. Scrogum of Bowie; Edgar Scrogum of Jean, Texas and Elmer Haney of Nocona; two daughters Nellie Austin of Madill, Okla., Marie Brown, Barstow, Texas, one brother, Math Bushong of Gainesville, Mo. and one sister, Mittie Price of Atroka, Mo. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. Burial was in Greenbriar Cemetery with Daugherty Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Ernest Thomas, Dovle Thomas, Elmer Adkins, Charles Milburn, Roy Davenport and Hassell Reynolds.

Funeral services for Floyd O. Bushong, 91, of Brixey, were held
Saturday, 18 December, at Smith Chapel in Ava, under the direction of Harlan
Howerton. Burial was in Smith Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Bushong died at 7:30 a.m. 16 December 1993, at .......Manor in Ava.
He was born 27 February 1902 in Douglas County, the son of Clint B. and
Josie (Bell) Bushong.
He was married to Ola Agnes Scott, who preceded him in death on 3
January 1979.
A farmer, he had been a lifelong resident of Brixey and had been a
member of the Church of Christ since 1953.
He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Bushong of Brixey and William
Bushong of Springfield; three grandchildren; one great grandchild, and two
brothers, Orville Bushong of Mountain grove and Frank Bushong of Gainesville.

The killing of Bye Bell last November at a country dance near Bertha, in
the western part of Douglas county by Orville Bushong, has been avenged in
the courts, relatives of the slain youth declared, and a family feud that
would have cost many lives in the hill country has been averted. Bushong was
tried in the Douglas county circuit court at Ava before Judge Fred Stewart
last week and the jury found him guilty of murder and fixed the punishment
at ten years in the penitentiary.
