On or about May 7, 1751, James had a second marriage to a widow Sarah McMurtry. They entered into a marriage contract, which was witnessed by James' son Patrick Young who would have been at least 14 at the time to be an offical witness: Chalkley's VIII, page 340: Deed Book 7, Page 252. 7th May, 1751. James Young, miller and plantationer, to Sarah McMurtry, £400, marriage contract. To be married according to rules of Church of Scotland. Sarah was a widow with children. Patrick, son of James. Teste: John Collyer, Wm. Brown. Proved and recorded, 20th November, 1755. Delivered: John Low, May, 1758.
*Chalkley's VIII, page 315: Deed Book 4, Page 379. 10th August, 1753. James Young and Sarah to Patrick Young. 340 acres on Whistle Creek in Forks of James, cor. Joseph Walker, North Branch James; cor. tract surveyed for Sarah Young. Teste: John Low, Francis McCown.
"Patrick apparently received the property where the mill was located or was given the rights to operate the mill, because he gave a bond to his stepmother, Sarah Young, to guaranty her right to receive a share of the
income from the mill" (McAlpine) as displayed by the following abstract:
*Chalkley's VIII, page 319, Deed Book 4, Page 525. Patrick Young to Sarah Young, bond 1753. Condition that [she] be allowed to use and enjoy part of the profits of the mill and appurtenances for her lifetime, which were conveyed to Patrick by James Young. Teste: Wm. Walker and John Low.
*Chalkley's VIII, page 342: Deed Book 7, Page 309. 15th May, 1756. James Young and Sarah, Patrick Young and Isabell to Andrew Hall, £50, 110 acres being the tract where James Young now liveth, including James Young's mill in the Fork of James River, crossing Whistle Creek, cor. Patrick Young. Teste: Jno. Lapesley, Samuel McCluer. Delivered: Wm. Bowyer, August, 1758.

So the final conclusion here is that James C. had (at least) 3 sons. James, Matthew and Patrick. It is possible he had others since he did not leave a will naming them. We also now know that James and John were likely siblings of Hugh, and Robert also early in the Augusta area with the most important find being that John was not their father. He was their sibling instead.

Slaying of the Halbert McClure Family

By Emory L. Hamilton
From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, pages 111-113.

On the 20th of September, 1782, Colonel Arthur Campbell wrote to Colonel William Davies (1), saying:

On the 11th instant a party of Northward Indians penetrated as far in this county as the settlements on the head of Moccasin Creek, which is within ten or twelve miles of Abingdon, attacked a family of fourteen in number, (of course secured in the interior part), killed the husband on the spot, captivated the wife and six (6) of the children, three of whom, after being a short space in the enemies hands, was most inhumanely murdered. One, a young woman, so long survived the blows as told the tragic tale. Two made their escape the first day and night. The old woman and one child, with a considerable booty in horses, household goods, etc., was carried forward three days, some distance down the Sandy River. When part of our duty, with a perseverance in purpose, through a most rugged and difficult way that does them honor, overtook the Indians and wounded several of them; recovered unhurt, the two remaining captives, with the Indian’s baggage and plunder they had taken.

Just seven days before the above letter was written, Campbell, had on the 13th of September, 1782, written to Col. Preston thusly: (2)

By a few lines received from Major Dysart, (3) I am informed that the Indians have murdered Halbert McClure’s family, near our Courthouse, and some other persons, the number there unknown.

Captain John Carr, who was born on Carr’s Creek in Russell Co., VA, September 6, 1773, and once lived as a boy on Moccasin Creek, wrote to Dr. Lyman C. Draper, in 1854 from Sumner Co., TN (4) saying:

...After that time (1776) my father moved near the head of Moccasin Creek. The Indians came and killed part of a family and carried off others as prisoners. This family lived within about two miles of my father. Their names were McClure. Sally, the oldest daughter was to be married the next day after the attack was made by the Indians. The father McClure was killed, also a son of his by the name of Moses, and Katherine, a grown girl, and John McClure, his oldest son was wounded, but afterwards recovered.

Sally McClure made her escape from the Indians the first night. She met the party who were in pursuit of the Indians, as might be expected, her intended husband was among them. His name was Kincaid, who married her shortly after her return.

James Oxer, who once lived on the Clinch, filed a Revolutinary War pension claim as the only living heir of his father, George Oxer, who was an Indian spy on the Clinch and who died in Montgomery Co., KY, in October 1809. In the claim filed in Warren Co., Indiana, in 1858, he states:

That his father served on the Clinch and was married to Dorcas Shelby (Shelley) who died in Kentucky in 1824; that his father was in a skirmish with the Indians in which Captain (Alexander) Barnett (5) recaptured the McClure family of Virginia, and placed them in the care of his father George Oxer.

Joseph Smathers who once lived in this vicinity before emigrating to Kentucky, tells a very confused version of this incident to the Rev. John D. Shane, (6) in which he says:

McClure’s lived at the head of Little Moccasin Gap. McClure’s cabin had a wooden chimney (7) on it. They (Indians) had gotten between the chimney and cabin. They had learned to say the old man’s grace. (Perhaps a table grace or prayer they overheard). His daughter was to have been married in a few days. He (the father McClure) came and fell on his knee and begged them to desist and was shot dead. They tomahawked and scalped a daughter and tread on her, and left her for dead, but she came to and lived. Two other daughters were taken off. One was the bride. They taunted her about her groom and mocked the grace the old man said. There never was half as much mischief done (by Indians) on Holston as on Clinch.

Halbert McClure had settled in 1773, near the head of Moccasin Creek in Washington Co., in Rich Valley, on a 400 acre tract of land opposite and a little east of Cabin Creek Ford and Bromley Gap on the southside of the North fork of Holston River. He assigned this tract of land to John Kinkead in 1781. (8) He was one of the appraisers of the estate of Benjamin Estill on April 17, 1782, and was a Juror in Botetourt Co., at a court on 15th of May, 1771.

In the early 1900s, pellagra reached epidemic proportions in the American South. There were 1,306 reported pellagra deaths in South Carolina during the first ten months of 1915; 100,000 Southerners were affected in 1916.

The traditional food preparation method of corn (maize), nixtamalization, by native New World cultivators who had domesticated corn required treatment of the grain with lime, an alkali. It has now been shown that the lime treatment makes niacin nutritionally available and reduces the chance of developing pellagra.[4] When corn cultivation was adopted worldwide, this preparation method was not accepted because the benefit was not understood. The original cultivators, often heavily dependent on corn, did not suffer from pellagra. Pellagra became common only when corn became a staple that was eaten without the traditional treatment . Third wife.. was Mary I. Smith. She had been married
previously to a Levitt and was a widow with 3 children when she married
John Stout Bushong.

Son of James S and Drusilla Bushong

Hiram first married Mary Ann "Naamah" Salsberry and they had four children. After Naamah died, he married Frances Reed Stansell.

Hiram was born in Ohio, but lived many other places. He is found in Celina, Collin County, Texas; Hunt, Kerr, Texas: Portales, Roosevelt County, New Mexico: and was last noted in South Bend, St Joseph, Indiana.

When he was a boy, he had an accordion with him in photos taken over the years. He lived at home with his parents, James and Drusilla Bushong in Columbus Grove, Ohio, until 1871 when he married Naamah Salsberry.

Sometime in the 1890's Hiram went into business with his nephew, John Chester Bushong. This was Chester's (and probably Hiram's)first business venture, which followed his attendance at an itinerant magic lantern exhibition, in which he was greatly interested. Although Chester's father (Hiram's older brother John Stout Bushong) objected to the project he still helped him, and Hiram Bushong, purchase the necessary outfit. Hiram being the older partner in the show business was the advance agent, the younger worked the lantern at the village school houses and other halls on that circuit. When about a hundred miles from home, Celina, Texas, after two particularly bad weeks of rather slim business, Hiram must have done a good job, drumming up customers, because Bushong's Magic Lantern Show, packed a crowded house and the future looked promising. But during the exhibition a couple of wild and drunken cowboys started in to "shoot up" the show, and before they left the hall the audience had retired in haste. Every window in the room was smashed as well as the magic lantern. Even the receipts at the box office disappeared during the melee. There was nothing for Hiram and young Chester to do but to start for home.

Obituary: [Gladwin County Record] Jun 12, 1924 - Page 1

James Wilson Bushong was born Oct 23, 1859 in Putnam county, Ohio and departed this life at his farm home in Hay township, Saturday, June 7, 1924 at the age of 64 years, seven months and fifteen days. He was married to Mary C. Klein June 26, 1888 [?] in Putnam county, Ohio and to this union were born six children, four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Maidow, Otaawa, Ohio; Mrs. Margaret Casselman, Flint; Mrs. Virgie Oard, Buckeye township, Gladwin county and Mrs. Anna Smith, Pewamo, Mich.; two sons, Robert of Hay township, Gladwin county and Thomas of Pewamo, Mich., who with the widow survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Boaz of Ohio, one brother, Henry Bushong of Gladwin township and 15 grandchildren.

Mr. Bushong had been ill only a week and it was thought he was improving and he had been up and around the house the day of his death. It is thought the immediate cause of his death was heart failure as he had been bothered with this affliction in the past.

Mr and Mrs Bushong came to Gladwin county from Ohio about 1910 and settled on the farm where they still live. Mr. Bushong was a faithful worker and was liked by all who knew him. He was a good citizen and will be missed in the community in which he lived.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, June 10 at the family home conducted by Rev. Charles Peterson of Wagarville M.E. church and interment took place in Highland cemetery, Gladwin.

The pallbearers were his sons, son-in-laws and one nephew. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. All the children excepting Mrs Margaret Casselman, who is ill at her home in Flint, were in attendance at the funeral. Others who attended the funeral from a distance were: Emerson Vanscoder, Harry Vanscoder, and Benj. Eisenbach of Pandora, Ohio.

FORMER VAN WERT MAN SAYS
HIS WIFE WOULDN'T COOK
--------------------------------------

Gross neglect of duty, extreme cruelty, and willful abandonment are the grounds named for a divorce in a petition filed in Common Pleas Court on Friday afternoon by Hannibal F. Bushong, against his wife Mary F, Bushong. The couple were married at Van Wert on January 21, 1885 and have five children. Two are minors and the husband asks for the custody of these.

Bushong claims that his wife frequently refused to cook his meals, that she would remain away from home until late at night at frequent intervals and would sometimes stay away all night. He claims that on August 19, 1911 she left his home and refused to return, while for a period of three years she has been willfully absent, so far as the duties of a wife are concerned. Attorney H.D. Crandle (?) brings the suit. Date of birth calculates to Oct 10 1863

Obituary was very scant, it only mentioned that he'd passed at the "county farm" which usually meant a nursing home or poor house.

I found record that he'd been buried in Ridge Cemetery, and a record of his son John L Bushong buying a plot there in the year of his fathers death. I have walked the cemetery and not found a headstone, but did find plots next to where he is supposedly buried.

I like the Household department very much. My papa was in the war four years. He belonged to Company D, 21st Regiment, O. V. V. I. He likes to read the letters from the old soldiers. We moved here from Ohio a year ago last September. We have Union and ex-Confederate neighbors, and like both. The people here are great lovers of flowers, especially house plants. Many of them have "pits", with sash covers to keep them in through the cold weather; they bloom all winter, and are more healthy than if kept in the house all the time. I have some I brought from Ohio that I prize very highly on account of associations connected with them. Some of these and some of the plants I have gotten since we came here are infested with small white worms at the roots. Will some one who knows please tell me a remedy.
