Biography

Coel Hen ("King Cole") Godhebog King Cole was born about 080.1 He died about 170, at age ~90.1
Coel Hen ("King Cole") Godhebog King Cole was King of Britain. He was King of the Britains. Coilus, his son, then ruled. He had been raised and educated as a Roman. Coilus was to rule his kingdom in peace and prosperity, being succeeded by his son Lucius. Taking up the crown on his father Coilus' death,

Romano-British ruler of Eboracum
founder of the city of Colchester in Essex, England. "Colchester" means "Cole's castle." king of the Britons following the reign of King Asclepiodotus. Yet another possibility is that Cole is the Celtic deity Camulus, god of war.

Geoffrey of Monmouth lists a King Cole in his Historia Regum Britanniae as a king of the Britons following the reign of King Asclepiodotus. The Welsh chronicles state further that his name was Coel Hen Godhebog, which would integrate the two possible names together. Monmouth states that Coel, upset with Asclepiodotus's handling of Diocletian's massacres, began a rebellion in the duchy of Kaelcolim(Colchester), of which he was duke. He met Asclepiodotus in battle and killed him, thus taking the kingship of Britain upon himself. Rome, apparently, was thrilled that Britain had a new king and sent a senator, Constantius Chlorus, to act as a diplomat to Coel. Afraid of the Romans, Coel met Constantius and agreed to pay tribute and submit to Roman laws as long as he was allowed to retain the kingship of Britain. Constantius agreed to these terms but one month later, Coel died. Constantius took Coel's daughter, Helena, and crowned himself as Coel's successor. Helen later gave birth to a sonwho became Emperor Constantine the Great.

Note that the Historia Regum Britanniae is not generally considered historically accurate.

OIJD KING COLE
Old King Cole
Was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he; He called for his pipe,

And he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three! And every fiddler, he had a fine
fiddle,
And a very fine fiddle had he. "Twee tweedle dee, twiddle dee, "
went the fiddlers.
Oh, there's none so rare As can compare
With King Cole and his fiddlers three.

Old King Cole, made famous through history, was found to have ascended his throne about 238 A.D., even then a hereditary king of Britain. He reigned over that portion of territory known today as Essex and Hertfordshire, and vicinity, with his capital at Colnaecester, formerly the Roman city of Camulodunum, and the present town of Colchester. He very shortly added to his holdings the principality of North Wales, through his marriage to Seradwin, its heiress, a princess descended from the royal house of Eudda, whence came the line:
"Pendragon Kings of Uther's royal race,"

among them the celebrated King Arthur.

The wife of King Cole was the only daughter of Cadfan, son of Conan ap Eudda, King of Wales.

Three children were born to them; the oldest, Tiboen, later famous as Helena; Guala or Julia; and the third, a prince who bore the maternal family designation of Conan or Cenan ap Coel. (Rowland's Mona Antiqua.)

The Prince, on his father's death, retired to rule over the northern territories acquired by his mother Seradwin, which are placed by one of the historians at the wall of Antoninus. (Carte.) His career has been lost sight of to a great extent through the difficulties of the language and the brilliant fate of his two sisters, which had taken the attention of historians since. It will be an interesting search for someone later, who knows the language and will take the time to go through all the old documents available, especially those of Wales.

Of his two sisters, one, the eldest, was destined to create a new line of Emperors of Roman territory, and the other to transmit to her descendants that imperial dignity, which, through the royal blood of the Pendragon family, descended to Cadwallader, the last British Prince of Wales of Roman descent, and then went on to the Tudors, of whom Henry the Seventh was the first, and Queen Victoria a most recent distinguished member. (Gibbon.)

It is in the life of Tiboen or Helena the eldest, that we have much of interest to relate. She was educated and fitted by her father to succeed him. Beautiful and brilliant though she was, she was destined to be the storm center and target for political attack much of her life; and as such, to be the victim later of the pens of more than seventy historians, most of whom, apparently, failed to seethe source of the attacks made upon her, or the reason for them. So clearly do these facts stand out before the unbiased reader of today, that one marvels at the thinness of the mists which were permitted to obscure them at all. He was born in 100 in Britain. He died in 170, at age ~90.2

DaughterIsabelle Summers+ (b. 27 January 1770, d. 11 September 1850)
SonSamuel Summers (b. 21 October 1771, d. August 1847)

Biography

John W. Summers was born about 1731. He and Isabella ("Esibala") Todd were married about 1762 in Augusta County, Virginia. He died on 27 March 1806, at age ~75, in Barren County, Kentucky.
Will of John Summers, Barren Co, KY, written 11 March 1806, Probated, April Court 1806,

Wife Isabel Summers
Son: John Summers, daughter Isabel Bushong, son: Samuel Summers
(These above shown as legally begotten)
Daughter: Mary Clark, son: William Summers, Other names James Young,

Witnesses Solomon Dickerson, Julius Marshall,

Barren Co Will Book 1, pg 57.

Summers, John W: 11 March 1806/ P: April 1806 Wife, Isabel; My three children: John Summers, Isabel Bushong, and Samuel Summers; My five children: John Summers, Mary Clark, Isabelle Bushong, Samuel Summers, and William Summers Witnesses: Soloman Dickerson and Julius Marshall Pg57. John Summers married, second, Isabella Young, Jun 1762, in Augusta Co, VA. Born, circa 1738. Died, after 1806, in Barren Co, KY. She appears to have been the widow of Patrick Young who dated his will April 4, 1761 in Augusta County, Virginia. It was probated May 19, 1761 and named as executor his wife, Isabella.

(Chronicles of Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Records of Augusta Co, VA 1745 - 1800 b y Chalkley Vol. III, p.62.) In Patrick's will he names his wife, ISABELLA, and son, JAMES, and daughters, SARAH,JANNET, and ALEXANDRIA. In the same source in Vol. II p. 342 is a lawsuit of Summers vs Campbell where John Summers and wife, Isabella, late Isabella Young, complain of James Campbell and Richard Woods, dated June 23, 1761.

So, between May 19, 1761 and June 23, 1761 John Summers must have married the widow Isabell a Young. *WRONG. John Summers was born ca 1730, place Unknown but possibly VA or PA. He was married once to an Unknown about 1755. This was determined by the Revolutionary War Pension Application of John Summers Jr. John Summers Jr, states he was born in 1760.

John Summers Sr. married Isabella Young in 1762. She was the widow of Patrick Young. Isabella had 4 children, James, Sarah, Jannet and Alice. John had one son, John Jr. they married very shortly after the death of Patrick Young. As the counties changed they went from Augusta Co. to Botetourt Co., then Rockbridge Co. Later in 1773 they made a physical move to Washington Co, VA. In 1779-80 John Summers and family migrated to KY. Some of the counties we find John in is Fayette, Mercer, Clark, Green and Barren County.

John Summers Sr. died in Barren County KY, in 1806. The 1806 date has caused some confusion with the German Line of Summers they also have an 1806 date and a John.

The Will of our John Summers Barren County, KY, Will Book 1 page 57 names:
His wife Isabel
His Children:
John Summers - m. Nancy Ann McMurtrey
Mary Summers - m. James Clark
Isabel Summers - m. Henry Bushong
Samuel Summers - m. Nancy Middleton
William Summers - m. Sarah Burcham

John lists the married names of his daughter in his Will.
I have seen the above children listed in other Summers lines this is an error. Also I have seen a William Summers as father of Samuel Summers this is an error that hopefully now will be changed. There is a large amount of documentation on John Summers Sr. and John Summers Jr.

Ellen. The date of Isabelle and John's marriage isn't known, but a listing in Chronicles of Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Records of Augusta Co, VA 1745 - 1800, Volume 1 on page 342, has caused much confusion.....

Chapter titled: County Court Judgements. Aug 1801 (M-Z) (page 327)
Page heading: November 1766 (A)

"Summers vs. Campbell, -John Summers and Issabella, his wife, late Isabella Young, complain of James Campbell and Richard Woods. Bond dated 23d June 1761."

....The case was settled November 1766, and at the time it was settled, Isabelle had indeed married John Summers, but it does not mean she was married to him at the time of the complaint and bond (1761). This is just notes on the case, not the actual complaint, which would have shown Isabelle Young as her name. And hence the clerk noted her former name. A John Sumneers [sic] is on the Fayette County Tax List in 1788, In the then Kentucky District of Virginia.
