Mary Hazel3 Clover (Jacob2, Henry1) was born 2 February 1833, died 25 September 1918, buried Pandora Cemetery. Her tombstone reads: Wife of George and Hiram.(1) Her death record states that Mary Day died 24 September 1918, aged 85 years 7 months 23 days. The informant, E. D. Bushong of Pandora, Ohio, stated that she was a widow, born Ohio and the daughter of [blank] Clover, who was “forein” born. The mother’s name was not included.(2) Mary married (first) 19 October 1850, Putnam County, Ohio, by Samuel Hooper, J. P., George Bushong.(3) George was born 1828, Ohio. He died 27 July 1864, at Columbus Grove, Putnam County, Ohio, of chronic diarrhea while still in the military. He was mustered in as a private in K Company 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 25 February 1864. He was given a 30 day furlough because of his sickness, during which he died. After his death, his widow applied for a pension. She listed Edward D. Bushong, born 23 September 1862, as the son of George and herself.(4)
Newspaper notice dated 1 June 1865: Administrators Sale of Real Estate. At John B. Fruchey Hotel in Columbus Grove, 1 July 1865. Northwest quarter, northeast quarter, Section 23, township 1 south range 7 east, 40 acres. Mary Bushong, administrator for George Bushong, deceased. David I. Brown, attorney for petitioner. 25 May 1865.(5)
Mary married (second) 26 November 1868, Putnam County, Ohio, Hiram Day.(6) Hiram was born 29 January 1816, died 23 April 1890, buried in Pandora Cemetery, Riley Township, Putnam County, Ohio. His tombstone reads: Dr. Hiram Day, Husband of Harriet Pierce and Mary Clover.(7) Hiram Day married (first) 28 January 1844, Putnam County, Ohio, Harriet Pierce.(8) Harriet was born 4 January 1822, Kent County, England, daughter of Wm. and Ruth (Stevenson) Pierce. Hiram was born in Wayne County, Ohio, the son of Elam and Almira (Mansfield) Day. He had 3 brothers in the Civil War. Children by his first wife: Almira Ruth, born 8 February 1845; Mary C., born 22 December 1846; Lacy Ann, born 17 August 1849; Hiram Marshall, 11 March 1854; Edward Mansfield, born 19 February 1857; William Oliver, 22 July 1860. Dr. Day had a long and successful practice as a physician and a surgeon at Pendleton. He married second to Mrs. Mary Bushong, daughter of Jacob Clover and Axy Hazel, who came here in 1834. By the second marriage, he had a daughter, Electa May, born 22 September 1871.(9)
The IGI lists a child born ca. 1852 to George Bushong, Jr. and Mary Clover, but no name is given. If this child existed, it probably died before 1860, because there are no children with her in the 1860 census. In the 1900 census, Mary is listed as having born one child, with one child living. However, in the 1910 census, she was listed as having born 3 children with 1 child living. The living child was Edward Bushong and one of the deceased children must have been Electa Day Grafton.

Mary Hazel Clover Bushong Day
2 Feb. 1833 – 25 Sept 1918
by Damon Smith Hostetler 3rd great-grandson
Mary Hazel Clover was born in Franklin County Ohio, the daughter of Jacob Clover, 29 November 1791 to 9 June 1840, and Experience “Azy” Hazel. She moved with her family to Putnam County in 1834. The Histories of Riley township, Putnam County, lists some of the early settlers as George Bushong, Thomas Lake, James Bunn, J.D. Wamsley and Jacob Clover.
1850 Putnam County, OH Riley Twp, Axy Clover 56; Sally Clover 20; Mary Clover 18; William Clover 15; Edward Clover 13; and Martha Clover 12.
The same census lists George Bushong 63; Lydia Bushong 59; George Bushong 23; as well as 4 younger siblings.
The younger George’s linage is; son of George (war of 1812) and Lydia Rush Bushong, son of John Bushong (Revolutionary War under Gen George Rogers Clark) and Jennett Summers Bushong; son of Andreas Boschung (signer of the Cumberland Compact 1780) and Catherine Buschung/Bushong.
On 19 October 1850, Mary Clover and George Bushong Jr. were married by Samuel Cooper J.P, in Putnam County as attested to by Probate Judge John Kuhns on 15 August 1865 for paperwork Mary needed to apply for a widow’s pension. Over the next several years George and Mary bought and sold land around Columbus Grove, Ohio, where they lived and worked.
On 23 September 1862 Mary gave birth to Edward DeWalt Bushong. Just two years later George Jr. enlisted in Company K, 14th Ohio Volunteers. He was listed as 5’ 9” tall, blue eyes, Dark hair, and fair complexion. Company K was sent to Ringgold, Ga. to prepare for the spring offensive along with 60,000 other men. Here he got sick. After the Army could not heal him they sent him home where he died in Columbus Grove days after arriving home. He is buried on the eleventh row of the old Pandora City Cemetery. His grave is marked with a Military stone.
Mary went on to sell their land and applied for a widow’s pension and put in for Edward’s government support. Four and a half years later, 24 November 1868, Mary married Dr. Hiram Day, 29 January 1816 to 23 April 1890. When they were married Dr. Day still had three children living at home, Hiram, aged 19; Edward M. aged 11; and William, aged 8. These boys were his sons with his first wife, Harriet Pierce, 28 January 1844 to ca. 1866.
Dr. Day took over the guardianship of Edward Bushong, but did not change his name and applied for Edward’s Civil War for pension. Mary gave Dr. Day a daughter, Electa Day, in 1871. Edward was nine years old when his half sister was born. Electa’s life was short and tragic. She married Thomas Grafton in 1890 and they both died in 1897. They are both buried in the old Pandora Cemetery.
Mary Clover Bushong Day would go on to survive her second husband and her daughter. When she died, 24 Sept 1918, she was drawing a Civil War widow’s pension of $75.
The first marriage of Edward DeWalt Bushong ended when Catherine died in 1886 and both of their children died. His second marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Ransom, 14 July 1862 to 30 June 1919. Their marriage produced Mabel Grace Bushong, 7 January 1892 to 6 January 1949, and Norman D. Bushong, 23 January 1895 to 18 April 1980. Both children married and had children. Mabel is the author’s grandmother.
Mabel Grace Bushong married Harry S. Hoschtetler (Hostetler), 15 March 1890 to 10 April 1983. Their middle child was Robert Edward Hostetler, 1 March 1920 to 30 March 1988 who married Bette Jane Smith, born 1920, and their middle child is Damon Smith Hostetler, born 1949.
This article was contributed by Damon S. Hostetler. He has published a book about his ancestors named, Marryin-In II. He took this information from that book. For more information you can contact Damon at
[email protected]Damon has pointed out to me that there are some problems with the cemetery book that I used for the descendants of Jacob Clover in Riley Township, Putnam County. Apparently, the person who wrote the book added information from other sources. I did not realize that when I did the book. Therefore I am putting some corrections here:
Electa May Day, born 2 September 1871, died 25 July 1897, married Thomas D. Grafton, born 4 April 1853, died 12 August 1897, buried Pandora.
TS actually reads: Thomas Grafton 1853-1897 Electa his wife 1871-1897
You list Edward's first wife and again quote Herbert Probst. His quote is wrong The one I know is there not only list her as wife of E. D. Bushong DD, Yrs and days but also her two young children. I have the picture.
Herbert Probst, Riley Township Cemeteries, Putnam County, Ohio, (Bluffton, Ohio: Privately Printed, 1997), 31.
Thomas D. Grafton, 4 April 1853 to 12 August 1897, buried Pandora Cemetery, tombstone reads, husband of Electa. Electa May Grafton, 22 September 1871, to 5 July 1897, wife of Thomas, buried Pandora Cemetery.
I used this cemetery book in publishing Clovers of Franklin County, Ohio. Since Jacob was the son of Henry Clover, I wanted as much on this family as possible. However, Damon has alerted me to a problem with this cemetery book. There is much information in the book which is not on the tombstones, but was added by the author in a misguided attempt to aid the reader. Damon tells me that some of what I quoted from the book is not actually on the tombstone itself. Apparently, in some cases, only the year is on the tombstone and the full dates were added by the author. Also, there are some relationship comments that were not on the stones. I am grateful to Damon for clarifying the situation.
This was a common problem a few years ago with cemetery books, but this one was just published in 1997, and I did not realize what was going on. I apologize to my readers.
