Biography

Mary Elizabeth Lawton was born on 17 July 1842 in Woodbury, Litchfield County Connecticut. She and John D. Bushong were married on 23 June 1864 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. She died on 1 May 1895, at age 52, in Forest Home, Poweshiek County, Iowa. She was buried in Forest Home Cemetary, Jasper County, Iowa.
Her married name was Mary Elizabeth Bushong. MARY ELIZABETH4 LAWTON (JAMES B.3, HUGH2, JAMES1) was born 17 Jul 1842 in Connecticut, and died 01 May 1895 in Forest Home Community, Poweshiek Co., IA. She married JOHN D. BUSHONG 23 Jun 1864 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa, son of JOHN BUSHONG and RACHEL VAN VOORHIS. He was born 10 Feb 1838 in East Liberty, Logan Co., Ohio, and died 29 Aug 1912 in Forest Home Community, Poweshiek Co., IA.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH LAWTON:
Mary Lawton's parents were born in England. She is buried in the Forest Home Cemetary, Jasper Co. IA, alongside her husband, John, and infant son, Samuel.

The following obituary and record of death was sent to me by Pat Rowell, researcher for the Poweshiek County, Iowa Historical and Genealogical Society:

"Mary Elizabeth Lawton, daughter of James and Rebecca Lawton, was born July 17, 1842, in Woodbury, Litchfield County Connecticut, and quietly bade adieu to earth and passed over the mystic river from her home near Forest Home, Poweshiek County, Iowa, May 1, 1895.
Her sufferings for three years had been seemingly without a parallel, but all was borne with Christian fortitude.
She, with her father and mother and three sisters, came to Iowa in 1855. January 22, 1864, she was united in marriage with John D. Bushong. To them were born eight children, four of them with the bereaved father survive. She made a public profession of faith in Christ and was baptised when about eighteen years of age. Her upright walk and chaste conversation were expressive of the purity of her character. She was a faithful wife and loving mother, and leaves a large vacancy in the home circle. Marriage 2 Deliliah Bushong b 1814
married 1860. I believe ( not proven yet with documentation ) that this Henry Derflinger married Christiana in the 1850 census in Union Co. Ohio. I have to try to find a divorce record or ? in either Union, Hardin or Logan co.

His youngest son - Joseph A. Derflinger.
By the 1860 census the family is broken up and living with other people in the area. I find Christiana in ILL. in 1870 married to another man and Joseph living with them. She eventually returned to Mt. Victory, Hardin Co. Ohio and died in 1905 while living with her son Wm B. Derflinger.

Henry and Delilah Bushong were married in 1860- in Logan Co. I find one of Joseph's brothers
( Wm B.) living with them in 1870 census - Bokes Creek. Another key to this is that Delilah's son James served in the same unit with 2 of Henry's sons in the civil war - the 7th Indpt. Ohio Sharp Shooters
( General Sherman's personal body guards in the last year of the war ).

Joseph A Derflinger M 11m. Margaret/ Eva Margaretha Hammon m. Heinrich or Henry Dorflinger, Doerflinger, Dorffllinger, Derflinger, Durflinger, even Tarflinger and Terflinger (from Germany Black Forest, Rhine River area the family possibly originally from Alsace, arrived I think about 1759 to Bucks Co. PA), lived in Loudon Co. VA.

I think Margaretha was born in Bucks Co. PA where she and Heinrich married in the Tohikon Church in 1761, this is from memory. In a book on the Tohhikon Church it says the minister who married my GGGGGrandparents traveled to Indian lands to preach. It wasn’t all that far from the Blackfoot Town. One would think the Hammons in these church records were German but many Indians were Christianized early on and there was also a Hammon who was a Fur Trader.

Or Susan or Susannah Goldsberry (Gouldsberry) m. Henrich’s son, Thomas Durflinger in VA. I have located mulatto Goldsberrys.... one Goldsberry ancestor on an old message board saying she came from a Black family. I’m not aware of having Black heritage. Susan is referenced in a book called From The Rhine To The Shenandoah as Thomas’s wife but a prominent Goldsberry researcher doesn’t know of her any where else though Goldsberrys did move to OH also. I believe I read Goldsberry Brothers operated Harper’s Ferry for a while. I think a Goldsberry in Maryland had slaves. Could this have been an Indian Slave?

Or Christiana Furron, Furon, or Furrow (unsure of actual last name) m. Thomas’s son, Henry Derflinger in VA. Henry and Christiana’s son Joseph Aaron is my GGrandfather. On Joseph’s Marriage Certificate it lists his mother’s maiden name as either Furron or Furrow, (I can’t read it.)

Christiana and Henry seem to have split up earlier in OH where they lived and the children were found living with other families on a census. Later Christiana was living with a Daniel Furon In IL in 1860 and her son, my 20-year-old GGrandfather, Joseph (Jos. A) was with her while his father was still back in OH seemingly m. to a Delilah Bushong. Interestingly his occupation is listed as Basket Maker. I wonder if Daniel Furon was a brother of Christiana’s or a 2nd husband. He was younger than her. A Christiana Furrow was born in VA but later than my Grandmother who was b. abt 1817. A Furrow family was neighbors of my Grandparents in OH and one of Christiana’s and Henry’s children lived with them when everyone was split up. Since Joseph’s marriage was in 1900 I wonder if Furron/Furrow was maybe the same name as Furon on the IL Census and maybe Daniel was her 2nd husband and Joseph just didn’t know her maiden name. So I don’t really know her maiden name and am interested in any Christianas b. abt. 1817 in VA and m. to Henry Dur/Der/Dorflinger.

The Furrows appear to have come from Switzerland before 1780's to Southampton Co., Va (via Nansemond Co?? - 1783 Tax List as "Farrow"?); moved thru Amelia Co. to Botetourt/Montgomery Co.

The "Goldsbury" 's with Frederick "Darflinger" are in 1820 Ross Co., Ohio,
No Goldsberry or Darflinger (any spellings) were found on Virginia Tax Lists of the 1780's so they may have 'just passed thru' before or later.

MILTON BUSHONG, farmer; P. O., West Mansfield; was born Oct. 22, 1826,in Perry Tp., this county; his father James Bushong, was barn in Ross Co., O., but his mother came from South Carolina with her father's family when she was about 13 years old; they settled near Chillicothe. Shortly after their marriage Mr. Bushong and his young wife moved to Logan Co., and settled on Mill Creek, Perry Tp., in 1821; and there Mr. Bushong died, leaving a widow and three children, besides Milton, who was born a short time after his father's death; here the widow and fond mother clung to her home and children as none but a mother could, and supported and educated them as well as circumstances would permit; soon as the older ones became of age and married they sold out their interest in the estate, but Milton kept his, and with him their mother always made her home until the time of her death, which occurred Nov. 25, 1869. While Milton was living on the old homestead he learned the carpenter's trade and worked at it, as well as conducting his farm; and at his trade he procured means enough to purchase 12 acres which is now in the corporation of West Mansfield. Subsequently he purchased 18 acres more and then sold the 30 acres of the old homestead and bought a piece of unimproved land in the northern part of the township, all of which he traded for the farm of 118 acres where he now resides, which is a beautiful location and well improved; adjoining and partly in the corporation of West Mansfield; to which he moved April, 1861. He has been twice married; first with Louisa Moore, June 22, 1850. She was born March 9, 1832, in Carroll Co., O.; her death occurred Sept. 12,1877, leaving five of her eleven children; William and Samuel C.(decease d); Mary C., married Jas. M. Ruehlen, of this township, Dec.25, 1873, and died Feb. 15, 1878 , leaving one child, Chloe E.; MiltonT. (deceased); Emma L. (is now Mrs. Wm. Ballinger, of Union Co.; they were married March 11, 1877); Clinton and John W. (deceased); SarahE., Charle s W., Edwin L, at home with their father; Albert J.(deceased). His second marriage was celebrated March 18, 1878, with Almira Hathaway. She was born Sept. 27, 1832, in Dighton, Mass., and was a widow of the late John Elliott; he left three children: Elmer W., N. V., and Flora S . Mr, Bushong was elected Justice of Peace April, 1865, and served continuously until this spring ; making 15 years in that office. With the exception of the 30 acres which he got out of the old homestead, he has made all the rest of his comfortable home by his own industry and economy. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 1850-as is also his wife a member of the same Church.

William Bradford was born in Austerfield, Yorkshire, England, and married Dorothy May on 10 Dec 1613 at Amsterdam, The Netherlands. They had a son,
John, born circa 1618 in Leyden. The family came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. William was the second signer of the Mayflower Compact, and was
elected Governor of the Plymouth Colony for 31 years. Dorothy fell from a Mayflower deck and drowned in Plymouth Harbor on 7 Dec 1620. John Bradford
married Martha Bourne, but they had no children.
William was married again on 14 Aug 1623 to Alice Carpenter, widow of Edward Southworth. She came from Leyden, Holland, and landed in Plymouth in
June 1623. Their marriage was the fourth recorded in Plymouth Colony. They had three children: William, Mercy, and Joseph.
William wrote Of Plymouth Plantation, the single most complete authority for the story of the Pilgrims and the early years of the Colony they founded. Written
between 1620 and 1647, the journal describes the story of the Pilgrims from 1608, when they settled in The Netherlands through the 1620 Mayflower
voyage, until the year 1647. The book ends with a list, written in 1650, of Mayflower passengers and what happened to them. Almira Hathaway Elliot

further - no Bushong is listed as serving in the Revolutionary War, here .. http://www.barrencoky.com/Military/roster_b2009.htm. I believe that the unnamed son, was Jacob - the other brothers, George and Henry were born later than Jacob and John. Valentine is an unknown. But it would make sense for the two brothers, Jacob and John, being close in age to join Army together....

* Valentine's birthdate is just a guess...But he was iver 21, ib 1798, in order to sign petitions and buy land.. so the latest he could have been born is 1777, his believed to be older brother, Henry was born in 1771, si Valentine had to be born about two years after that - 1773.
So the range of years he could be born is between 1773 abd 1777. 28. Valentine signs the Petition of 1798 Scioto River Settlers to Congress: Genforum, posted by Judy Cassidy :

The Joshua Ewing marker, looking south toward Big Darby Creek.

(article)
It is a rather lonely place to this day. And if one does not look closely while driving north on U.S. Route 42 from Plain City and across Big Darby Creek, the traveler might miss a small 1930s roadside park and a small stone marker within it.

The marker reads simply "Joshua Ewing -- 1765-1821 -- First white settler in Union County -- owned and cleared this land -- placed by Hannah Emerson Dustin Chapter -- D.A.R. -- 1934."

As far as it goes, the marker is absolutely accurate. But there is a lot more to this story, and it is a story closely linked to the founder of the place that would become Columbus.

In 1795, a frontiersman named Lucas Sullivant began to work as a surveyor in the Virginia Military District. Set aside to reward Virginia veterans of the American Revolution and to make some money for Virginia as well, the gigantic pie-shaped wedge of land stretched from the Miami River in the west to the Scioto River in the east.

But the land had not been settled until the long and bloody conflict with Ohio's Native Americans concluded with the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.

Within weeks of the signing of the treaty, survey work was underway. Sullivant and his crew experienced hardships and danger in their work and more than a few of these men were lost to raging rivers, falling trees and occasional encounters with Native Americans who had not heard of the Greenville treaty.

Like most frontier surveyors, Sullivant took his pay in land. In doing so, he occasionally took an extra step and laid out a town at a place he thought might prosper. One of those places was at the place where Mill Creek met the Scioto River near what is now Bellpoint in Delaware County. Another was at a bend of Big Darby Creek where the Darby Plains to the south met the forests of central Ohio.

He called his new town North Liberty and began to look for people to settle it. He did not have to look too far. Joshua Ewing and his younger brother, James, had come west from their home in New Jersey at the end of the American Revolution. Like many other young men of their generation, they liked what they found first in Kentucky and then in the Ohio Country.

Along the way they made the acquaintance of Sullivant. And Sullivant extolled the virtues and possibilities of his new town called North Liberty. Persuaded of the bright future of the new town, the brothers bought town lots in a North Liberty that only existed on paper and returned to New Jersey to collect their families and possessions.

In the spring of 1798, the Ewings set off by wagon for Ohio. Joshua had recently married Margaret Scott and she rode with him. James was accompanied by his aged mother, Cynthia, and his two sisters, Betsy and Mrs. Eunice Donaldson. Donaldson was a widow and her only son, Ewing Donaldson, came with her.

The Ewings arrived at the site of North Liberty and found nothing but an open field near the creek. They immediately set to work and soon had two log cabins erected and a small field of corn planted.

Joshua Ewing was trained as a surveyor and soon was at work surveying in what is now Madison and Union counties. James and the rest of the family tended the corn crop and waited for other settlers to arrive.

They did not come.

On May 23, 1800, Eliza M. Ewing was born to Joshua and Margaret Ewing at the family home in North Liberty. She was the first white female child to be born in Union County and, as things turned out, the only person who could claim to be a native of North Liberty.

Concerned about the nonexistent growth of North Liberty, the Ewings wondered why this was the case. It did not take the brothers long to see why North Liberty was a paper town. In the fall of 1797, Sullivant had laid out another town at the forks of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers and called it Franklinton.

In 1798, the same year the Ewings arrived in North Liberty, Sullivant decided to make his home in Franklinton. With the support and encouragement of Sullivant, Franklinton began to grow while North Liberty languished.

In 1800, the Ewings abandoned their cabins and moved to what they considered to be better land in what is now Jerome Township in Union County. The cabins were later occupied by Native Americans who chose to stay in Ohio.

Joshua and James Ewing had memorable careers of their own. At the time of his death in 1821, Joshua Ewing was the father of eight children and serving as the first auditor of Union County. James married, had two children and opened the first general store in Union County. He also brought the first sheep to central Ohio. He died in 1850.

And the only trace of North Liberty is that lonely marker by Big Darby Creek.

Local historian and author Ed Lentz writes the As it were column for ThisWeek News. On 17 March 1800, Ross Co. OH Land Records, Vol. I:298, James Scott of Ross
County sold to Valentine Beshong of Ross County LOT 154, but in the
following year, Ross Co. OH Land Records Vol. 1:489, we see that on 22 July,
1801, Jeremiah McLene, the Ross County Sheriff has the land. He then sold
this to Catherine Beshong of Ross County, LOT 254 in Chillicothe, FORMER
PROPERTY of Valentine Beshong, which satisfied the debt to Lucas Fuller. Did
Valentine actually live there, we dont' know, but since he does not appear
in any further records, it is difficult to know. Who else but his mother
would do this, buy her son's land back for him?
Six years later, however, Valentine claimed that yes he had met the
conditions, so on 9 May 1807, Valentine Bishong sued Lucas Sullivan out of
the Clerk's Office at the Court of Common Pleas, apparently it was a jury
trial and the jury found for the plaintiff $54.40 in damages. Lucas Sullivan
in turn files a transcript of the records of a Judgement against Valentine
in the Supreme Court, October Term of 1807. In the end Catherine ends up
as the owner of Valentine's land which she leaves to her other sons with no
mention of Valentine.

"Sunday last arrived here Captain Tymperton, in 17 weeks from Rotterdam, with 220 Palatines - 44 died in their passage. About three weeks ago, the passengers dissatisfied with the length of the voyage, were so imprudent as to make a mutiny, and being the stronger party, have ever since had the goverment [sic] of the vessel, giving orders from among themselves to the captain and sailors, who were threatened with death in case of disobedience. Thus, having sight of land, they carried the vessel twice backwards and forewards between our capes and Virginia, looking for a place to go ashore, they knew not where. At length they compelled the sailors to cast anchor near Cape May, and eight of them took the boat by force and went ashore; from whence they have been five days coming up by land to this place. The eight men were committed to prison."

Ordinairily [sic]10 to 12 weeks were quite sufficient to make the passage. But these people saw no land after 12, 13, yea 14 weeks.

This ship was the pink "John and William" which reached Philadelphia on 17 October 1732, under Captain Tymperton from Rotterdam, according to vol. 17 second series of Pennsylvania Archives, page 72. A "pink" is a narrow sterned vessel.

PHILA Oct 19 Sunday last arrived here Capt. Tymberton, in 17 weeks from
Rotterdam, the ship Pink John and William of Sunderland, with 220 Palatines,
44 died in the passage. About 3 weeks ago , the passengers, dissatisfied
with the length of the voyage, were so imprudent as to make a mutiny, and
being the stronger partyhave ever since had the Government of the Vessegiving
orders from among themselves to the Captain and Sailors, who were threatened
with death in case of disobedience. Thus having sight of land, they carried
the vessel twice backwards and forwards between our Capes and Virginia
looking for a place to go ashore, they knew not where. At length they
compelled the sailors to cast anchor near Cape May and some of them took the
boat by force and went ashore: from whence they have been five days coming up
by land to this place, where they found the ship arrived. Those concerned with
taking the boat are committed to prison.

There has been no list found of the "Mutineers." Story of a fellow passenger on the Pink "John and William"

From book, FAMILIES NOT FORGOTTEN, by Frances Ruth Hackworth:

Christophel PROBST was born 31 March 1661 in Kandel in the Palatinate in
Germany, this being the location of the religious upheaval precipitating
the exodus from this area to the new land of America. Christophel was
married to Eve Christine HOFFMAN and ten children were born to them
between the late 1680's and about 1714. Christophel's will shows the family
residing in Oberseebach, wherein he lists the children's names, including Philip
Jacob PROBST, my 7th great grandfather.

John Michael was a traveling potter, Johannes was a potter in Kandel in 1727.
He came to America in 1733. Philip Jacob was a potter of Oberseebach, he
came to America in 1732.
v. PHILIP JACOB BROBST, b. 30 Nov 1699, Kandel, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany; d. 27 Apr 1747, Albany Twp., Berks, PA.
http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/kibble/93/brobst2.html

France controlled Alsace in 1720, therefore Philip & sons were French
citizens. Philip arrived in America 17 Oct 1732 on "John & William". Also Catrina
(Cerene), Michael & "Feldy" (Valentine) "PROOPS". Ship was last from
Dover. Landed in Philadelphia Co., PA...became Berks County. Philip bought 150
acres 1 Aug 1734 & 100 acres 25 Mar 1742, Albany Twp., Berks, PA. Family bible
shows Philip BROBST came from Germany, Dominion of Lower Lapson and settled in
Albany Twp. in 1734.

Philip Jacob PROBST worked in the town of Oberseebach of Alsace. Records
show he was born about 1690-1695 in Wurttemberg, Germany, and another record
states Dominion of Lower Lapson. France controlled Alsace in 1720 so Philip and
his family were French citizens. The town in Alsace where Philip and Cerene's
children were born is Oberseebach...the records state:"Philippe Jacques
Probst and Catharine, his wife, Lutherans, had these children found in the Parish
registers of Oberseebach: 28 August 1721 Jean Michel; 18 Feb 1724 Jean
Valentin; 29 December 1726 Jean Martin; 8 March 1731 Anne Marie."

Philip qualified in Philadelphia 17 October 1732. Interesting article on Mennonites and early Pennsylvania - the Bushong's immigrated as Swiss Reformed and attended Lutheran Church. A couple of later Bushongs are noted to have become mennonite...

Mennonite Persecution & Migration to America

Decades before the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence from British rule, people were fleeing Europe for the new world. The period during the late 1600's and well into the 1700's saw tens of thousands of migrants leaving to seek peace, freedom, and opportunity to build a better life. Many were fleeing tyranny and persecution from religion. Many settlers were quite poor when they arrived. The abusive conditions of their homeland did not offer an opportunity to improve their quality of life.

Settlers to Pennsylvania and other colonies included persecuted people of Germany, then known as the Palatine, and Switzerland. The Palatinate was governed by "Duches", the regional authority ruling over their land on which Mennonites and other people lived and worked. The people of these regions, primarily of the Mennonite faith, had limited rights and freedoms to do what they pleased. They were restricted and heavily taxed by the government and the local landlords. For example, if they purchased rights to a property, the previous owner could later reverse the sale.

We include the following as it may be interesting and informative to the reader. It is an account of the struggle of immigrants to America as well illustrated by author John Ruth in his work titled "Maintaining the Right Fellowship". It gives clear insight to understand the conditions forcing migration and the measures taken, although minimal, to try to alleviate the migration and assist the suffering migrants.

An especially tumultuous year was 1709. This was one of the early years that saw a wave of emigrants from the German Palatinate traveling down the Rhine River to Rotterdam. Ships leaving the port of Rotterdam traveled to London. From London they hoped to find passage on ships to the new world. Arriving in Rotterdam, a group of Mennonites was said to have been so poor that they had brought hardly enough necessary clothing, much less money for the fare to London or the journey over the Atlantic. (Ruth 86) By late April, 852 Palatines were sent to England. The emigrants were arriving to the city of London in such large groups that more than 1,200 were sent in May with another 4,000 to follow less than a month later. The authorities in Rotterdam were becoming concerned at the size and cost of this human wave.

In London, crowds of British would gather to look at the poor Palatines or tease the Catholic emigrants traveling with them. As the flow of migrants remained uncontrolled, Queen Anne went to hear firsthand their reasons for emigrating from the Palatinate. A collection was legislated to accept donations. Officials debated about where to ship or how to employ the emigrants, with 1,000 arriving per week. (Ruth 87) Quakers in London, who interviewed them, found that their reason for leaving Germany was due to poverty and harsh conditions. The migrants had hoped the Queen would pay their fare to Carolina or Pennsylvania, claiming that they read books promising this. (Ruth 88)

By fall 1709, the refugee migrants arriving in London from Rotterdam were nearing 13,000. The government of Rotterdam sent two messengers up the Rhine River towards the Palatinate to stop any immigrants headed in their direction. By letting them know of the difficulties and payment of their return fares to the Palatinate, the two men believed that a thousand people may have turned around by their effort. But even after this, 1,100 more left the port of Rotterdam for London. The British government was now disgusted with this uncontrolled migration and was shipping back subsequent arrivals. A royal declaration was sent to the Continent warning that any who might still travel should turn around as they would find it useless, or that they should be able to support themselves. The campaign was effective, the groups of migrants reluctantly stopped coming. (Ruth 89)

In Switzerland, terrible persecution was also building. The Canton of Bern, Switzerland deported Anabaptists (including Mennonites), about the year 1710. (Ruth 89) A whole boatload of Mennonite prisoners, being deported, had been freed from their Swiss guard while coming down the Rhine river with sick men, women and children. (Ruth 90) The persecution against the Mennonites was bloody and severe.

In 1716, the Palatine region had a new, Catholic elector presiding over the people. He doubled the fee charged to the Mennonites for the privilege to practice their religion. He limited their land-purchasing privileges, which put pressure on some thirty Mennonite based communities. He did not relax restrictions placed against Mennonites from practicing trades. Taxes continued to be a heavy burden. And so, in 1716, a new desire to migrate began, which dwarfed the previous migration arriving to the port of Philadelphia. (Ruth 93)

The freedom in the new world that William Penn had received from the King was becoming known around the German region. Prior to this, Penn had traveled to the Palatine after hearing of the religious persecution there, and befriended the Mennonites. With his land, he was then able to offer them and others a place to build a community where people of all religions would live in peace. The Mennonites came to the new world to seek relief of heavy taxation and religious restrictions. Also important was the chance for them to buy land with their rights of ownership protected.

In 1717, many refugees were still leaving (or deported from) Bern, Switzerland, and not able to find permanent housing in Holland or the Palatine region. Pressure was again building to leave the Palatinate. (Ruth 95) Another wave of immigration began in 1717, including three shiploads of 363 immigrants arriving at Philadelphia late that summer. (Ruth 96)

Pennsylvania Royal British Governor William Keith became concerned about the volume of arrivals from Germany who had spread throughout the countryside. These newcomers had not carried any certificates from their homeland. Keith felt they should take some sort of oath or show loyalty in some way to the King. (Ruth 98)

A letter written (about 1726) by Peter Roth in Germany to his brother Johannes Roth in Pennsylvania says that they are heavily burdened. They are required to pay a militia tax, palace tax, building tax and a monthly tax. Also that there is an order by the civil authorities to sequester the property of all Mennonites for their earnest money. In 1725, a Mennonite family, named Landes, purchased a property near a Palatine village but it was nullified by the electoral regime after Catholics in the region objected. Afterwards, any member of the Catholic, Lutheran or Reformed churches could legally demand that Mennonites return their land purchases. (Ruth 104) This denial of a normal right (to purchase property) once again sent a shock of dismay through the Mennonite community. (Ruth 105)

To financially assist their European relatives and encourage them from trying to migrate, the Dutch Mennonites were sending substantial donations to the Palatine Mennonites,...the congregation at Rotterdam gave a Sunday offering of 1,487 guilders for this purpose (large for the time).

For the third time since 1709 another wave of emigrants was gathering. The Amsterdam "Committee", realizing that the emigrants would not be stopped no matter what they said, asked how many were coming. This caused them to send an urgent message to Pennsylvania that the preachers there should explain clearly to the congregation that they must not advise their poor friends to leave the Palatinate. The preachers were to say, that if the Palatines stayed at home they would receive help there. (Ruth 105)

Later, in 1732, there was another move by emigrants leaving the Palatinate sailing down the Rhine on large boats. As published in the Pennsylvania Gazette of 1732, they were reported to be fleeing "hard usage, intolerable servitude, and religious grievances" (qtd. in Ruth 109). When more than 3,000 emigrants of different religious persuasions had arrived in Rotterdam, the Mennonite Committee there finally decided they had enough of this migration. They passed a resolution, in July of 1732, that they would no more help the Palatines travel, for any reason whatsoever, except for return fare. This bold message seems to have had a considerable effect among the 600 or more Mennonite families remaining in the Palatinate. Afterwards, their migrations fell off sharply. (Ruth 109)

The Mennonite Committee also circulated discouraging stories of experiences aboard ships crossing the Atlantic. One ship carrying Palatines to Philadelphia, in 1732, had a worse journey than usual taking 4 months and losing 60 passengers. Another story of those arriving without the means to pay their fare, such as many of the younger immigrants, who were forced to be bound as a servant for 3 to 8 years to a master who would pay their fare and provide lodging. (Ruth 110)

Even the main body of the Schwenkfelder faith can be found arriving from Germany, in 1734. They fled a life of threats and harassment from living in a Catholic territory.

The immigrants took great risks to arrive in America. To give an idea of what they might have experienced on a sea voyage, the author Ziegler includes the following:

The immigrants were crowded together on small ships. Many of them slept in beds on the deck or on the deck floor itself. When a storm came up, they "reefed" the sails, fastened the rudder, and closed the portholes which left everyone sitting in darkness. Infants, children and elderly often died, sometimes without notice. If the trip took longer than expected, the food rations were often depleted because they ate too much in the beginning of the voyage. After a month and half at sea, when they should have been near land, soundings would be made to judge their distance to land. When they were close, those who survived were overjoyed. The gloom and despair onboard the ship was substituted by anticipation and prayer. A dairy entry by an unknown immigrant mentions that brethren and sisters came in small boats to meet the ship, with bread and fruit, for which the immigrants gave praise to the Highest, publicly onboard with singing and shouts of joy. The immigrants cried and thanked the Lord for having preserved them. (Ziegler 77-78)

Today, immigrants still arrive to the shores of America for similar reasons. This movement is reflected in the poem on the Statue of Liberty. It was written by a young Jewish girl, of her belief in the democracy of the United States, at a time when persecuted and repressed peoples were leaving in Europe. Her name was Emma Lazarus, born in 1849, in New York City. (FAU Libraries) In 1883, she wrote the words of "Lady Liberty" as if she were saying "...With silent lips, give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" (Lazarus)

Those happy in their homeland will more likely stay in their homeland, however, people around the world, repressed by social and economic conditions, will continue to look at America as a place where people live in freedom.

There were eight distinct waves of Mennonite immigrations that occurred between the late 1600s and post-World War II.13 The first three waves are relevant to the trends of my families that will be discussed later in this paper. In the first wave, between 1709 and 1759, “a few thousand Mennonites and some five hundred Amish immigrants found their way to North America.”14 As religious intolerance and persecution increased, the number of immigrants to America increased. The second wave of immigration was the largest in Swiss Mennonite history. It was during this immigration period, from 1707 to 1756, that approximately “three to five thousand Mennonites came to Pennsylvania primarily from the Palatinate along the Rhine River.” 15 During the eighteenth century, there were also significant Amish immigrations to America, particularly between 1735

1732-Another Picture of Suffering and Hardships. Another picture of the dreadful experiences which ignorant Palatines subjected themselves to in their journey to our land.

"Sunday last arrived here Captain Tymperton, in 17 weeks from Rotterdam with 220 Palantines - 44 died in their passage. About three weeks ago the passengers dissatisfied with the length of the voyage, were so imprudent as to make a mutiny, and being the stronger party, have ever once had the government of the vessel giving orders from among themselves to the captain and sailors, who were threatened with death in case of disobedience. Thus, having sight of and they carried the vessel twice backwards and forwards between our ______ and Virginia, looking for a place to go ashore, they knew not where. At length they compelled the sailors to cast the anchor near Cape May and eight of them took the boat by force and went ashore; from whence they have been five days coming up by land to this place, where they found the ship arrived. Those concerned in taking the boat are committed to prison.

This ship was the "John and William" which reached Philadelphia Oct. 17, 1732, under Captain Tymperton from Rotterdam according to Vol. 17, Sec. Series of Pennsylvania Archives, page 72.

......It is indeed interesting to contemplate that these persons suffered such a discouraging experience on their journey here. What a facinating story they must have told their children and grandchildren of their desperate plight, at sea. No wonder they mutinied! Ordinarly 10 to 12 weeks were qute sufficient to make the passage. But these people saw no land after 12, 13, yea 14 weeks of patient sailing. Then they did at the end of 14 weeks or as the account states about 3 weeks before landing.

" Think of the scene on that ship from another point. According to the record there were 98 women and children on the vessel when it landed in addition to about the same number of men. What terror they must have experienced and how the children must have cried in terror. How desperately in despair were the mothers. How helpless all of them! Think too of the deaths -- 44 deaths that voyage. This is, one each third day dies and is sunk in the sea." page 246. Hallo Mr.Bushong,

Emigration of this family to America was unknown in Palatinate until now.
Your maps show "Waldfischbach" as origin or town, your ancestors lived in. This is wrong and right: Schmalenberg is an own village, but belonged to the parish of Waldfischbach (I myself am born in Schmalenberg). Stelzenberg is only 10 kilometers distance to Schmalenberg.

Emigration of this family to America was unknown in Palatinate until now.
Your maps show "Waldfischbach" as origin or town, your ancestors lived in. This is wrong and right: Schmalenberg is an own
village, but belonged to the parish of Waldfischbach (I myself am born in Schmalenberg). Stelzenberg is only 10 kilometers
distance to Schmalenberg.
Best wishes

Through the cooperation of Dr. E. C. Ruby the
Register of the Conejohela or "Canadochly" Church in Windsor
Township [now Lower Windsor Township] was secured by The
Historical Society of York County in 1944, in order that a
translation and transcription might be made for historic
preservation and public reference.

The following copy of the records is literal in
every respect except the form of record. This is changed
in the interestof uniformity and conciseness. The
spelling of the personal names is entirely unchanged.

The original register, used continuously for
almost a century and a quarter, measures approximately
eight and one-fourth by twelve and one-fourth by one and
three-fourth inches. It is bound in much-worn brown
leather.
