BRUBAKER FAMILY, and Connections
IN America. John Brubaker emigrated from
Switzerland — Germany — to America about 1710.
No record has been found as yet showing the
exact time. In the year 1717 he and a cer-
tain Christian Hershey jointly took out a warrant
for 1,000 acres of land, situated in Hempfield
township, Lancaster county, about three miles west
of the present Lancaster city. In the year 1718 he
and the said- Christian Hershey divided the above
tract of 1,000 acres into two equal parts by running
a line east and west, Brubaker taking the southern
part, viz., 500 acres, on which tract he built the first
grist and saw mill in Lancaster county (so tradi-
tion says), the mill property being located on the
little Conestoga Creek, at what is now called "Ab-
beyville." It is not certain that John Brubaker was
married when he came to America. On May 13,
1728, John Brubaker and his wife, Anna (what her
maiden name was is not known) , sold and conveyed
150 acres of the 500 acres mentioned, including the
mill property, to one Christian Stoheman. John
Brubaker and his wife Anna had the following chil-
dren : John (it being the custom at that time, and
many generations following, that the first born son
received the father's given name), Jacob, Abraham,
Peter, Daniel, Henry, Joseph, David, Christian and
ohe daughter, Anna. Anna Brubaker was married
to Abraham Buckwalter.

In his book, The History and Genealogy of the Brubaker Family, author Phares Brubaker Gibble lists various descendants and lines of the Brubaker families (and their different spellings) in North America by letters of the alphabet. In his scenario, Hans Brubaker (1685-1748) was designated with the letter A, and was thus assigned the designation A-1. Jacob, who died in 1751, was assigned B-1, and John Brubaker was assigned C-1. The letter assignments were somewhat arbitrary, but have served well over the years in differentiating various lines of the larger family.

Abram M. Brubacher (1690's - 1753), the father of immigrants John (D-1) and Abraham (D-2), was a brother of Hans Brubaker (A-1). Hans' son John (A-2) returned to Germany in search of a wife. Upon finding one, he brought her and his cousin Abraham (D-2) with him back to the New World. They returned in 1749.

John Brubaker, the eldest son, after having grown to manhood desired to go to Switzerland (Germany) to seek a wife, but his parents were dissuaded from consenting. However, he went after his father's death, in the year 1750, arrived in his father's native land, and was received with great joy. His friends had two lamps burning evenings. He was successful in his matrimonial undertaking, and found a maiden, Maria Newcomer, who was willing to cast her lot with him in the New World. John Brubaker and Maria Newcomer entered into the sacred relation of matrimony A. D. 1750, eight days before Whitsuntide. They then sailed for America, it is not known how soon after their marriage, but presumably at their earliest convenience.Abraham Brubaker, a cousin of John, accompanied them, and was so well pleased with the New World that he wrote enticing letters to his brothers and sisters, who also emigrated to America. Abraham Brubaker settled at the Middle creek, where " Wissler's mill " is located, not far from Clay. There he intended to build a mill, but getting into difficulties with some land owners in regard to the water right he moved to what is now called Indiantown, about three miles northeast from Ephrata. Hence his descendants are called the Indiantown Brubakers.

Whitsuntide is a Christian festival of Pentecost. It is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's disciples. The festival is also called Whitsun, Whitsunday, Whit Sunday or Whit.

from Wikipedia...

Whitsun (also Whitsunday, Whit Sunday or Whit) is the name used in the UK for the Christian festival of Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's disciples (Acts of the Apostles chapter 2). In England it took on some characteristics of Beltane, which originated from the pagan celebration of Summer's Day, the beginning of the Summer half-year, in Europe.

[1] Whitsuntide, the week following Whitsunday, was one of three vacation weeks for the medieval villein;[2] on most manors he was free from service on the lord's demesne this week, which marked a pause in the agricultural year. The Mixel Famly

Martin Mixel was one of the early pioneers who sought a home in upper Leacock. A brother accompanied Martin to america, but was either lost or captured by the Indians. Martin was a landholder in 1735, and died at a "great old age" during the early part of the American Revolution. The land which was held by Martin extended from Machanicsburg to Bearville on the south side of the pike and east of the Garber plantation. Universal tradition has it that Mixel built his first house near a spring on a farm now owned by Adam Miller, but occupied by his son Sheaffer. No traces of this house can be seen except for the cellar excavations. Martin had three sons,- Jacob, John, and George. Jacob inherited his father's estate in portion, and also erected the Midway Hotel between Mechanicsburg and Bareville. Jacob had one daughter, an only child, who married Hiram Batten, whose son, Israel, still resides upon a small tract of land of the original Mixel plantation and is the only lineal descendant of this noted family.

Catherine Brubaker

F, #16799, b. 2 March 1802, d. 2 February 1890

Parents

FatherJohn Brubaker (b. 22 August 1768, d. 17 September 1844)
MotherBarbara Mauck (b. 9 September 1774, d. 10 November 1841)

Biography

Catherine Brubaker was born on 2 March 1802 in Augusta County, Virginia. She died on 2 February 1890, at age 87.
Her married name was Catherine Rhodes. 1. From Forerunners: A History or Genealogy of the Strickler Families Their Kith and Kin, by Harry M. Strickler (Harrisonburg, Virginia: 1925), pp. 92-94:

The Brubakers,
and the family of
Catherine Brubaker Strickler

Catherine Brubaker Strickler, wife of Henry D. Strickler, was the daughter of John and Barbara Mauck Brubaker, the said John being the son of Abraham and Barbara Miller Brubaker, and the said Abraham being the son of John and Anna Brubaker. The last mentioned John came to New York from Berne, Switzerland, June 16, 1710, with three brothers, Jacob, Henry and Abraham.
Also Henry D. Strickler's wife, Catherine Brubaker, was a sister of Mrs. John (Major) Strickler, and they became the parents of a large family. Then Christina Brubaker, her sister, married Abram Strickler. Their sister, Barbara, married a Mr. Miley, and their daughter married Joseph Strickler of Egypt. Peter Brubaker, their brother, married Barbara Coffman, who became the mother of Gideon Brubaker, grandfather of Elder Rueben T. Strickler of Egypt.
From deed records, John Brubaker purchased land in Massanutten in 1735. This makes John one of the early settlers of Massanutten. He never came to Virginia, but his son, Abraham, located on the Massanutten plantation.
The French and Indian war began in 1754; Braddock was defeated in 1755. The war continued until 1763 during which time the valley settlements were harassed by the Indians, sometimes led by French officers.
Kercheval, in referring to an Indian raid in Massanutten in 1758, says that they plundered old man Brewbecker's home. He was referring no doubt to Abraham (the first) Brubaker. Abraham was not an old man in 1758. Kercheval probably knew Abraham or knew of him in his old age and was referring to him at that time. A neighbor, Mr. Stone, was killed at this time. He says John Brewbecker was then (1830) living on the farm.
John Brubacher (Brubaker) emigrated from, Switzerland and came to America about 1710. On the 27th of September, 1717, he (in company with Christian Hershey) took out a warrant for 1,000 acres of land, lying on the Little Conestoga in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pa. Tradition says that he was accompanied by three brothers.
The four Emigrants were:
1. Jacob
2. Henry
3. Abraham
4. John m. Anna. He came to New York from Berne, Switzerland, with his three brothers, Jacob, Henry and Abraham, landing in America June 16, 1710.
Unto John and Anna Brubaker were born nine sons and one daughter...
John and Daniel settled on 300 acres of land on Hammer Creek, Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., Pa.
Christian, David, Henry, Jacob, and Joseph married and lived in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster Co., Pa.
Abraham came to Virginia, located in Massanutten, m. Barbara Miller, daughter of Jacob Miller, founder of Muellerstadt (Woodstock now), and by this marriage came into possession of much of the landed estate of his father-in-law. He gave the land whereon the Court House of Shenandoah County now stands. His son, Abraham, lived at Woodstock...
Some of the above information was given to me by Mrs. Irene Spitler of Constantine, Mich., daughter of Jonas Strickler, son of Henry D. and Catherine Brubaker Strickler. She obtained her information from Mrs. Sallie Brubaker of Massanutten who lives on the old Brubaker homestead. She had the tradition of the four emigrant brothers. Her list did not contain Anna and Catherine Brubaker, daughters of Abraham of Massanutten, neither did it contain the list of the nine sons and the daughter of John of Pennsylvania. Mr. Joseph A. Brubaker and his sister, Miss Mary Brubaker, of White House, gave me a very complete list including the Pennsylvania branch, but their list did not contain the tradition of the four emigrant brothers.
Mrs. Spitler's information was that Abraham Brubaker married Susan Long. The Miley Notes state that he married Barbara Long. It seems, however, that he married Barbara Miller, daughter of Jacob Miller, Sr. of Woodstock. Mrs. Spitler's list also contained the name of David Brubaker who married Miss Stover. This was evidently Abraham of the Miley Notes. His name was probably David Abraham.
