I must state here something that I have for-
gotten above. As soon as the ships that bring
passengers from Europe have cast their anchors
in the port of Philadelphia, all male persons of
15 years and upward are placed on the follow-
ing- morning into a boat and led two by two to
the court-house or town-hall of the city. There
they must take the oath of allegiance to the
Crown of Great Britain. This being done, they
are taken in the same manner back to the ships.
Then the traffic in human souls begins, as re-
lated above. I only add that in purchasing
these people no one asks for references as to
good character or an honorable discharge. If
any one had escaped the gallows, and had the
rope still dangling around his neck, or if he had
left both his ears in Europe, nothing would be
put in his way in Pennsylvania. But if he is
again caught in wrong-doing, he is hopelessly
lost. For gallows' birds and wheel candidates,
Pennsylvania is, therefore, a desirable land.

He sailed for America in 1717 with his wife and three children and arrived in Philladelphia, Pennsylvania on Aug. 24, 1717, having been on the passage for 12 weeks. The expenses were $30.44 a piece. He bought 250 acres of land between Strasburg and Bunker Hill in Lancaster County, PA for $186.66. Benedictus was born in the seventeenth century, near Weiler, on the river Harre, in Switzerland, and sailed from there, with his wife Maria and son Ulrich, landing in Philadelphia Aug 24, 1717.The journey to the new country was made via England, and the cost of traveling from the Weilers to England was nine florins, or $3.78 per head. Passage from England to Philadelphia was secured for £6 or $26.66 per passenger.
He was a Mennonite minister, and in the Weilers, Switzerland, he had owned a farm, which he sold for 700 Raix dollars, equivalent to $630 American money. Soon after his arrival in the latter county, purchased 250 acres of land for £42, sterling, or $186.66. It was located in what is now Strasburg township, about a mile northwest of the village of Strasburg, and here in the wilderness home he began the arduous labors of a pioneer. It was in 1719 that he received payment in coin for the farm which he had sold in Switzerland. He did not long survive his migration to America, passing away April 27, 1720. Hans Pieter Brechbuehler

JOURNEY TO PENNSYLVANIA
The journey to Pennsylvania fell naturally into three parts.
The first part, and by no means the easiest, was the journey
down the Rhine to Rotterdam or some other port. Gottlieb
Mittelberger in his Journey to Pennsylvania in the year 1750,
writes: 24
"This journey lasts from the beginning of May to the end of
October, fully half a year, amid such hardships as no one is
able to describe adequately with their misery. The cause is be-
cause the Rhine boats from Heilbronn to Holland have to pass
by 26 custom houses, at all of which the ships are examined,
which is done when it suits the convenience of the custom-
house officials. In the meantime the ships with the people are
detained long, so that the passengers have to spend much
money. The trip down the Rhine lasts therefore four, five and
even six weeks. When the ships come to Holland, they are de-
tained there likewise five to six weeks. Because things are very
dear there, the poor people have to spend nearly all they have
during that time."
The second stage of the journey was from Rotterdam to
one of the English ports. Most of the ships called at Cowes, on

the Isle of Wight. This was the favorite stopping place, as 142
ships are recorded as having sailed from Rotterdam to Cowes.
Other ships touched at one of seven other channel ports. Tak-
ing them from east to west they were: Deal, where twenty-
two ships stopped, Dover, with eleven ships, Portsmouth
thirty-two ships, Gosport, near Portsmouth, two ships, Porte
in Dorsetshire, one ship (No. 109), Plymouth two ships, Fal-
mouth, in Cornwall, four ships. One ship (No. 297) went from
Rotterdam to London, one ship (No. 263) from Rotterdam to
Berwick upon Tweed, on the east coast of England, near the
Scotch border, five ships from Rotterdam to Leith in Scotland,
two ships from Rotterdam to the Orkney islands (Nos. no,
163) and one ship from Rotterdam to St. Christopher, one of
the West India islands.
Another harbor in Holland, which was frequently used as a
starting point for the ocean journey was Amsterdam. From
there two ships went to Dover, two to Portsmouth, two to Gos-
port, three to Cowes, one to Tingmouth (now Teignmouth) in
Devonshire, one to Shields, on the east coast of England and
one to Aberdeen.
, Beginning with the year 1752, nine ships started in various
years from Hamburg, Germany, and from there went either
to Cowes or to Plymouth. No less than thirty-one ships came
directly from London to Philadelphia. From 1766 to 1775,
ten ships started from Lisbon, Portugal, while two ships are
listed as coming from Boston and one from South Carolina to
Philadelphia.
In England there was another delay of one to two weeks,
when the ships were waiting either to be passed through the
custom house or waiting for favorable winds. When the ships
had for the last time weighed their anchors at Cowes or some
other port in England, then, writes Mittelberger, "the real
misery begins with the long voyage. For from there the ships,
unless they have good wind, must often sail eight, nine, ten to
twelve weeks before they reach Philadelphia. But even with
the best wind the voyage lasts seven weeks."
The third stage of the journey, or the ocean voyage proper,
was marked by much suffering and hardship. The passengers
being packed densely, like herrings, as Mittelberger describes
it, without proper food and water, were soon subject to all
sorts of diseases, such as dysentery, scurvy, typhoid and small-
pox. Children were the first to be attacked and died in large
numbers. Mittelberger reports the deaths of thirty-two chil-
dren on his ship. Of the heartless cruelty practised he gives the
following example: "One day, just as we had a heavy gale, a
woman in our ship, who was to give birth and could not under
the circumstances of the storm, was pushed through the port-
hole and dropped into the sea, because she was far in the rear
of the ship and could not be brought forward."
The terrors of disease, brought about to a large extent by
poor food and lack of good drinking water, were much aggra-
vated by frequent storms through which ships and passengers
had to pass. "The misery reaches the climax when a gale rages
for two or three nights and days, so that every one believes
that the ship will go to the bottom with all human beings on
board. In such a visitation the people cry and pray most pit-
eously. When in such a gale the sea rages and surges, so that
the waves rise often like mountains one above the other, and
offen tumble over the ship, so that one fears to go down with
the ship; when the ship is constantly tossed from side to side by
the storm and waves, so that no one can either walk, or sit,
or lie, and the closely packed people in the berths are thereby
tumbled over each other, both the sick and the well—it will be
readily understood that many of these people, none of whom
had been prepared for hardships, suffer so terribly from them
that they do not survive." 23
When at last the Delaware River was reached and the City
of Brotherly Love hove in sight, where all their miseries were
to end, another delay occurred. A health officer visited the ship
and, if any persons with infectious diseases were discovered
on the ship, it was ordered to remove one mile from the city.
As early as 1718, Dr. Thomas Graeme was appointed to visit
and report on all incoming vessels. But no reports from him
are on record until the year 1738. On September 14, 1738,
Governor George Thomas laid before the Board the reports
of Dr. Graeme, "setting forth the condition of four ships
lately arrived here from Rotterdam and Amsterdam; And it
being observed from one of the said reports that were the
Passengers on Board the ships Nancy and Friendship allowed
to be immediately landed, it might prove dangerous to the

health of the Inhabitants of this Province and City, It is Or-
dered that the Masters of the said Ships be taken into Custody
for their Contempt of the Governour's Order, signified to
them by Thos. Glenworth, pursuant to a Law of this Province, to
remove to the Distance of one Mile from this City, and that they
shall, remain in Custody till they shall give security in the sum of
Five Hundred Pounds each, to obey the said Order, and not to
land any of their passengers Baggage, or Goods, till the Pas-
sengers shall have been viewed and Examined, and untill they
shall receive a Licence from the Governor for so doing." 2G
The Governor urged at this time that a hospital be erected
for sick passengers, but the Assembly refused to act until an
epidemic broke out in the city of Philadelphia. Then the As-
sembly voted to buy Fisher Island, at the junction of the
Schuylkill with the Delaware. The island was bought in 1743.
On February 3, 1743, Governor Thomas approved a bill,-7
passed by the Assembly, for the purchase of this island of three
hundred and forty-two acres, with the buildings on it, to be
used for a hospital. The name of the island was changed to
Province Island, and as such it appears on the map of Phil-
adelphia, which we present. The erection of an adequate hos-
pital was, however, delayed until the year 1750.
How serious conditions were and how many of the sick pas-
sengers died, after being brought to Province Island, appears
from a statement of Jacob Shoemaker, an undertaker, which
he handed in to the Council on November 14, 1754:
"An Accompt of the Palatines buried this Year.

28 Preserved with the ship-lists of the year 1754. The persons for whom the pas-
sengers were buried werethe Philadelphia merchants, to whom they were consigned.
A vivid account of the arrival of these passenger ships in
the harbor of Philadelphia, is given by the Rev. Henry M.
Muehlenberg, in a report, which he sent to Halle in the year
1769. He writes:
"After much delay one ship after another arrives in the
harbor of Philadelphia, when the rough and severe winter is
before the door. One or more merchants receive the lists of
the freights and the agreement which the emigrants have
signed with their own hand in Holland, together with the bills
for their travel down the Rhine and the advances of the 'new-
landers' for provisions, which they received on the ships on
account. Formerly the freight for a single person was six to
ten louis d'ors, but now it amounts to fourteen to seventeen
louis d'ors.* Before the ship is allowed to cast anchor at the
harbor front, the passengers are all examined, according to
the law in force, by a physician, as to whether any contagious
disease exists among them. Then the new arrivals are led in
procession to the City Hall and there they must render the
oath of allegiance to the king of Great Britain. After that
they are brought back to the ship. Then announcements are
printed in the newspapers, stating how many of the new ar-
rivals are to be sold. Those who have money are released.
Whoever has well-to-do friends seeks a loan from them to
pay the passage, but there are only a few who succeed.
The ship becomes the market-place. The buyers make their
choice among the arrivals and bargain with them for a cer-
tain number of years and days. They then take them to
the merchant, pay their passage and their other debts and re-
ceive from the government authorities a written document,
which makes the newcomers their property for a definite
period.
* the equivilant of the louis 'dors is about $4.50, though its purchasing power at the time was much greater.

SOME LANCASTER COUNTY FAMILIES FROM THE CANTON OF
BERNE, SWITZERLAND.*
By Prof. Oscar Kuhns, Middletown, Conn.
i
In the conclusion of my article in the October number of THE PENN-
SYLVANIA-GERMAN on some Lancaster County families from the Can-
ton Zurich, I said I should later write an aricle on Lancaster families from
Berne. Here, as there, I can not give the connecting links between the
American and the Swiss branches of the various families; I can only
point out the fact that certain well-known Lancaster families did originate
in the Canton of Berne.
It is well known that as early as the first decades of the 17th century
the Anabaptists had obtained a stronghold in the Emmenthal, and neigh-
boring places of Berne. Desperate efforts were made to eradicate them;
many were imprisoned, their property was confiscated, and, following the
unholy example of the French in punishing the Huguenots, the govern-
ment of Berne sold many of the Anabaptists (Mennonites as they were
later known) to France, to the different Italian provinces, and especially
to Venice, — to be used as galley slaves, especially, as in the case of the
latter, in the wars against the Turks. Among those cast into the prison
in the city of Berne itself, we find in 1761 the following well-known Lan-
caster names : Ulrich Baumgartner, of Lauperswyl ; Hans Zaugg (Zug or
Zook) of Signau; Jacob Gut (Good) of Zofingen; Matthys Kaufman, of
Kriegstetten. All the above persecutions led to the first emigration of
the Bernese Taufer (Mennonites), — in September, 1660. Those who emi-
grated then were few in number. The first emigration of importance was in
1671, when, on account of oppression at home, about 700 Bernese Taufer
left theix homes and settled in the neighboring Palatinate and Alsace.
Among them were the Bigers, Brenimans, Bieris, Neukomms (Newcom-
ers), Newenschwangers, Burkholders, Stauffers, Strohms, Witmers, Bau-
mans, Leemans, Shenks, Bachmans, Mullers, Burkis", Wengers and others.
From this time on many Taufer fled from Berne and settled among
their relatives and fellow-believers in the different parts of Alsace and
the Palatinate. In 1731 and later years we hear of Mennonite settlements
in which the well-known Bernese (as well as Lancaster County) names
occur of Neukomm, Fratz, Wittmer, Krahenbuhl (Graybill), Kundig,
Brand, Gauman (Gehman), Kaufman, Hoffsteler, Baumann, Strahm,
Landis, Neysli (Nissley), Graf (Groff), Oberholzer, Kreiter, Martin, Burk-
halter, Funk, Rohrer, Gut (Good), Moselmann (Musselman), Huber
(Hoover), Gerber (Garver), Behm, Bahr, Muller, Herr, Wisler, Schneebli,
Hauri (Howrey), Hiestand, Neff, Langenacker.
Muller, in giving this list, says that the names are "vorzugsweise
Bernese".
Among those Bernese names found in the various Mennonite com-
munities in the Palatinate and Alsace in the 18th century, we find likewise
a number of Zurich names, well-known in Lancaster County, such as Landis,
Hershey, Brubacher, Kagi, Meili, etc. The name Herr, or Heer occurs
also, probably coming from Zurich, although originally from the Canton
Glarus. In a book I found in the Stadt-Bibliothek of Zurich, entitled,
"Das ausgestorbene Adel (with coats of arms) von Stadt und Landschaft
Zurich, by Jean Egli, 1865, the family Heer is given as "Ein altes ange-

40 NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY
Thus we see the emigrants from both Berne and Zurich settled together
in Alsace and the Palatinate ; and it is easy to see how when the Catholic
princes of these principalities began to persecute the Mennonites, and they
emigrate^ to Pennsylvania, they came together.
The largest of all these emigrations of Swiss Mennonites of Pennsyl-
vania was in the year 1710-11. As I have told in my book in the "German
and Swiss Settlements of Colonial Pennsylvania", — this was an enforced
emigration, the Canton of Berne making an effort to get rid of its trouble-
some sectaries by sending under escort a large number of them to Holland,
hoping thence to deport to America. This plan failed largely through the
refusal of Holland to be a party thereto ; and yet it was the cause of a large
movement of emigration on the part of the Mennonites themselves. They
were shipped on boats at Berne and Neufchatel, and descended the Rhine
to Holland, whence many afterwards came to Pennsylvania. The lists given
by Muller of those on the various boats, tells also the town or village whence
they came. As this may throw light on the particular ancestral locality of
some of our Lancaster County families I give some of these places here.
In the Emmenthal ship: Martin Strahm came from Hochstetten; Hans
Burki from Langnau ; Peter Gerber and his wife Verena Aeschlimann from
Langnau ; Ulrich Beer from Traub ; Hans Fluckiger from Lutzelfluh ; Nicho-
las Baumgartner from Trub ; Chr. Gauman from Hochstetten ; Daniel Neu-
komm from Eggiwyl; Hans Wisler from Langnau; Ulrich Schurch from
Sumiswald ; Katharina Haldiman from Hochstetten ; Barbara Rohrer from
Bolligen ; Kath. Bieri from Laupenswyl ; Hans Schallenberger and his wife
Elspeth Neuenschwander from Trub.
In the Oberland ship (i. e. from the mountain district of Berne), we
find: Christ. Stutzmann from Spiez; Christ. Steiner from Diessbach;
Elsb. Wenger from Thierachern; Barb. Ruegsegger (Ricksecker) from
Diessbach; Elsb. Huber from Frutigen; (Peter Krahenbuhl (Graybill)
from Diessbach.
* In the Neuchatel ship we find: Hans Zurcher from Frutigen; Anna
Trachsee from Frutigen; Anna Bucher from Reichenbach; Elsb. Binggeli
from Schwarzenburg.
These are a few of the names given by Muller, but are typical Lan-
caster County names. One name not found among the above is yet of the
greatest importance, that of Bendicht Brechbuhl (Brightbill of Brackbill),
who took an important part in the negotiations with Holland, which made
the above emigration possible. So in the list of prisoners in Berne in 1710,
we find further indication of the dwelling places of Lancaster County fami-
lies. Thus from Trachselwald we have Hans Wisler, Hans Schneider,
Clauss Baumgartner, Ulli Beer, Ulli Brachbul — from Sumiswald, Ulli
Schurch ; from Brandiss, Hauss Fluckiger, from Signau, Martin Stram
and Christian Gaumann. r
That all these families were of old Mennonite ancestry can be seen
from the fact that as far back as the 16th century we find the same names
given as belonging to the Taufer. Thus in a list of Mennonites put to death
in the Canton Berne, we find the following list: 1529, Ulrich Schneider
of Lutzelflus ; 1538, Steff en Rugsegger ; 1539, Lorenz Aeberli from Grunau ;
1543, Walti Garber of Signau ; 1550, Elsi, wife of Kasper Zaugg of Sumis-
wald; Christian Bronnimann; 1554, Kaspar Zaugg, Sumiswald.
In 1538 a Taufergesprach was held in Berne; and among those pre-
sent were Uli Neuenschwander, of Eggiwyl ; Walti Gerber of Rottenbach ;
Hans Schellenberg and Hans Krabenbuhl of Signau; Uli Hunziker of
Schofftlen and Uli Fluckiger of Niederhuttwyl. 28) Oct. 17, 1732. Palatines imported in the ship Pink John and William, of Sunderland, Constable Tymperton, Master, from Rotterdam, last from Dover. Sixty-one men above sixteen, one hundred and nine women and children of both sexes
of different ages in all 170. (Editor.)

Elijah Basham first married Katharine Baltonberg, whose father was a captain of the King's Guards. His second wife was Hannah Cartlich and his third Sarah Hume, a direct descendant of the emigrant, Lord George Hume. To this last marriage two children were born—Robert Hume and Sarah McKay. Robert married Caroline Virginia Rector. The Rectors came to Virginia from Germany in 1714 with a colony of German Protestants. They settled in Spottsylvania county, being the first of this nationality who afterwards settled Germantown. Alfred Rector, Virginia's father, married into the Grigsby family, which had long been distinguished in Scotland and England. Rev. James Grigsby, a member of this illustrious family, came to Virginia as a young man and became the president of William and Mary College. Alfred Rector was one of the wealthiest men in Fauquier county, Virginia, a member of Congress and filled many other offices of trust. Nine children were born to Robert Hume and Virginia Basham, viz.: Sallie Roberta, Virginia Josephine, Robert Neville, Katharine, Alfred Rector, Mary Peyton, Elizabeth, Margaret Baylis and Samuel Malcolm.
