Benedictus was born in the seventeenth century, near Weiler, on the river Harre, in Switzerland, and sailed from there, with his wife Maria and son Ulrich, landing in Philadelphia Aug 24, 1717.The journey to the new country was made via England, and the cost of traveling from the Weilers to England was nine florins, or $3.78 per head. Passage from England to Philadelphia was secured for £6 or $26.66 per passenger.
He was a Mennonite minister, and in the Weilers, Switzerland, he had owned a farm, which he sold for 700 Raix dollars, equivalent to $630 American money. Soon after his arrival in the latter county, purchased 250 acres of land for £42, sterling, or $186.66. It was located in what is now Strasburg township, about a mile northwest of the village of Strasburg, and here in the wilderness home he began the arduous labors of a pioneer. It was in 1719 that he received payment in coin for the farm which he had sold in Switzerland. He did not long survive his migration to America, passing away April 27, 1720.

SOME LANCASTER COUNTY FAMILIES FROM THE CANTON OF
BERNE, SWITZERLAND.*
By Prof. Oscar Kuhns, Middletown, Conn.
i
In the conclusion of my article in the October number of THE PENN-
SYLVANIA-GERMAN on some Lancaster County families from the Can-
ton Zurich, I said I should later write an aricle on Lancaster families from
Berne. Here, as there, I can not give the connecting links between the
American and the Swiss branches of the various families; I can only
point out the fact that certain well-known Lancaster families did originate
in the Canton of Berne.
It is well known that as early as the first decades of the 17th century
the Anabaptists had obtained a stronghold in the Emmenthal, and neigh-
boring places of Berne. Desperate efforts were made to eradicate them;
many were imprisoned, their property was confiscated, and, following the
unholy example of the French in punishing the Huguenots, the govern-
ment of Berne sold many of the Anabaptists (Mennonites as they were
later known) to France, to the different Italian provinces, and especially
to Venice, — to be used as galley slaves, especially, as in the case of the
latter, in the wars against the Turks. Among those cast into the prison
in the city of Berne itself, we find in 1761 the following well-known Lan-
caster names : Ulrich Baumgartner, of Lauperswyl ; Hans Zaugg (Zug or
Zook) of Signau; Jacob Gut (Good) of Zofingen; Matthys Kaufman, of
Kriegstetten. All the above persecutions led to the first emigration of
the Bernese Taufer (Mennonites), — in September, 1660. Those who emi-
grated then were few in number. The first emigration of importance was in
1671, when, on account of oppression at home, about 700 Bernese Taufer
left theix homes and settled in the neighboring Palatinate and Alsace.
Among them were the Bigers, Brenimans, Bieris, Neukomms (Newcom-
ers), Newenschwangers, Burkholders, Stauffers, Strohms, Witmers, Bau-
mans, Leemans, Shenks, Bachmans, Mullers, Burkis", Wengers and others.
From this time on many Taufer fled from Berne and settled among
their relatives and fellow-believers in the different parts of Alsace and
the Palatinate. In 1731 and later years we hear of Mennonite settlements
in which the well-known Bernese (as well as Lancaster County) names
occur of Neukomm, Fratz, Wittmer, Krahenbuhl (Graybill), Kundig,
Brand, Gauman (Gehman), Kaufman, Hoffsteler, Baumann, Strahm,
Landis, Neysli (Nissley), Graf (Groff), Oberholzer, Kreiter, Martin, Burk-
halter, Funk, Rohrer, Gut (Good), Moselmann (Musselman), Huber
(Hoover), Gerber (Garver), Behm, Bahr, Muller, Herr, Wisler, Schneebli,
Hauri (Howrey), Hiestand, Neff, Langenacker.
Muller, in giving this list, says that the names are "vorzugsweise
Bernese".
Among those Bernese names found in the various Mennonite com-
munities in the Palatinate and Alsace in the 18th century, we find likewise
a number of Zurich names, well-known in Lancaster County, such as Landis,
Hershey, Brubacher, Kagi, Meili, etc. The name Herr, or Heer occurs
also, probably coming from Zurich, although originally from the Canton
Glarus. In a book I found in the Stadt-Bibliothek of Zurich, entitled,
"Das ausgestorbene Adel (with coats of arms) von Stadt und Landschaft
Zurich, by Jean Egli, 1865, the family Heer is given as "Ein altes ange-
*The Pennsylvania-German, Vol. XI, No. 12, December, 1910,
40 NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY
Thus we see the emigrants from both Berne and Zurich settled together
in Alsace and the Palatinate ; and it is easy to see how when the Catholic
princes of these principalities began to persecute the Mennonites, and they
emigrate^ to Pennsylvania, they came together.
The largest of all these emigrations of Swiss Mennonites of Pennsyl-
vania was in the year 1710-11. As I have told in my book in the "German
and Swiss Settlements of Colonial Pennsylvania", — this was an enforced
emigration, the Canton of Berne making an effort to get rid of its trouble-
some sectaries by sending under escort a large number of them to Holland,
hoping thence to deport to America. This plan failed largely through the
refusal of Holland to be a party thereto ; and yet it was the cause of a large
movement of emigration on the part of the Mennonites themselves. They
were shipped on boats at Berne and Neufchatel, and descended the Rhine
to Holland, whence many afterwards came to Pennsylvania. The lists given
by Muller of those on the various boats, tells also the town or village whence
they came. As this may throw light on the particular ancestral locality of
some of our Lancaster County families I give some of these places here.
In the Emmenthal ship: Martin Strahm came from Hochstetten; Hans
Burki from Langnau ; Peter Gerber and his wife Verena Aeschlimann from
Langnau ; Ulrich Beer from Traub ; Hans Fluckiger from Lutzelfluh ; Nicho-
las Baumgartner from Trub ; Chr. Gauman from Hochstetten ; Daniel Neu-
komm from Eggiwyl; Hans Wisler from Langnau; Ulrich Schurch from
Sumiswald ; Katharina Haldiman from Hochstetten ; Barbara Rohrer from
Bolligen ; Kath. Bieri from Laupenswyl ; Hans Schallenberger and his wife
Elspeth Neuenschwander from Trub.
In the Oberland ship (i. e. from the mountain district of Berne), we
find: Christ. Stutzmann from Spiez; Christ. Steiner from Diessbach;
Elsb. Wenger from Thierachern; Barb. Ruegsegger (Ricksecker) from
Diessbach; Elsb. Huber from Frutigen; (Peter Krahenbuhl (Graybill)
from Diessbach.
* In the Neuchatel ship we find: Hans Zurcher from Frutigen; Anna
Trachsee from Frutigen; Anna Bucher from Reichenbach; Elsb. Binggeli
from Schwarzenburg.
These are a few of the names given by Muller, but are typical Lan-
caster County names. One name not found among the above is yet of the
greatest importance, that of Bendicht Brechbuhl (Brightbill or Brackbill),
who took an important part in the negotiations with Holland, which made
the above emigration possible. So in the list of prisoners in Berne in 1710,
we find further indication of the dwelling places of Lancaster County fami-
lies. Thus from Trachselwald we have Hans Wisler, Hans Schneider,
Clauss Baumgartner, Ulli Beer, Ulli Brachbul — from Sumiswald, Ulli
Schurch ; from Brandiss, Hauss Fluckiger, from Signau, Martin Stram
and Christian Gaumann. r
That all these families were of old Mennonite ancestry can be seen
from the fact that as far back as the 16th century we find the same names
given as belonging to the Taufer. Thus in a list of Mennonites put to death
in the Canton Berne, we find the following list: 1529, Ulrich Schneider
of Lutzelflus ; 1538, Steff en Rugsegger ; 1539, Lorenz Aeberli from Grunau ;
1543, Walti Garber of Signau ; 1550, Elsi, wife of Kasper Zaugg of Sumis-
wald; Christian Bronnimann; 1554, Kaspar Zaugg, Sumiswald.
In 1538 a Taufergesprach was held in Berne; and among those pre-
sent were Uli Neuenschwander, of Eggiwyl ; Walti Gerber of Rottenbach ;
Hans Schellenberg and Hans Krabenbuhl of Signau; Uli Hunziker of
Schofftlen and Uli Fluckiger of Niederhuttwyl. From the 30,000 Names Book...
