History
Family Tradition
Clair Bushong, Sr. began drilling water wells with a cable tool rig near West Mansfield, Ohio in 1920. His eldest sons, Ernie and Ed, started helping him in the late 1930s. When the two of them went to serve during World War II, sons Burt and Clair, Jr. started working in the family business. Ernie and Ed returned from over seas and then worked with their brothers and father. Eventually, younger brothers Dick and Bob joined in on the tradition of Bushong drillers. In the late 1940s, they were involved in oil and gas drilling in southeastern Ohio. Throughout the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and into the 1980s, the Bushongs drilled a large portion of the water wells in the region for resident homeowners, building contractors, industries, farms, orchards, golf courses, etc. They also drilled a great number of blast holes for the stone quarries in the region. The seven Bushongs were even featured in a May 1960 article in The Driller, a nationally circulated magazine. Ernie's son Steve and Clair Jr.'s son Rick were involved in the family tradition for a short time. Ernie's late son Mike was a driller for most of his life. Clair, Jr. continued to drill on into his 70s, subcontracted work in his 80s, and advised and assisted Ryan in his 90s. That same passion, integrity, and tradition of excellence lives on today at Bushong Drilling. "United States Census, 1940," Clair Bushong, Jerome Township, Union, Ohio, United States

EAST LIBERTY LOSES GOOD OLD CITIZEN
Job Bushong's life snuffed out following a stroke of apoplexy. Funeral
services depend on brother.
One of East Liberty's esteemed citizens, Job Bushong, died near 3
o'clock Wednesday morning following a stroke of apoplexy and paralysis. On March
22 Mr. Bushong was stricken with apoplexy after which he never regained
consciousness and death was not unexpected. The good man will be missed by
citizens of the community where he had long resided for his life was a useful
one. He had been a member of the Methodist Church and a citizen staunch and
true. Mrs. Mary Welch, a sister, reached home but recently from St. Cloud,
Florida where she has been spending the Winter, and was present at the
bedside of Mr. Bushong with the wife and other kindred. W. H. Bushong, a
brother of the deceased, and wife of Bellefontaine, who are wintering in St.
Cloud, are hastening home, and upon the time of their arrival, depends
arrangements for the funeral. Job Bushong was born on July 30, 1853, near West
Mansfield, the son of Jacob Bushong and wife and had resided the greater
portion of his life in Logan County. He had lived in Lima, Springfield and
Urbana, returned to East Liberty from the last named place last November. The
deceased was twice married, the first wife, who was Mary Wren, passing away
some five years ago. Mrs. Lavina Alsbaugh Bushong, the second
wife, remains. The children of Job Bushong are Charles Bushong, of Lima; Mrs.
Will Grubbs and Mrs. Benjamin Cook, of Bellefontaine; Ora Bushong, of
Springfield, and Mrs. Cora Krause of Columbus. Two brothers remain besides the
brother and sister named, Milton Bushong of East Liberty, and George
Bushong, of Elkhart Indiana. Mr. Bushong would have reached the age of 68 next
June. He had always been an industrious citizen and his days were filled with
labor. A kindly, good-hearted man is gone.

-------------
TWO BELLEFONTAINE WOMEN, BOTH OVER SIXTY, ENGAGE IN AN ALTERCATION BECAUSE
JOB'S WIFE FINDS HIM WALKING ON THE STREET WITH THE OTHER WOMAN-- A SERIOUS
CASE THAT'S AMUSING LOGAN COUNTY.
Belletontaine, Ohio, September 1----Mrs. Job Bushong, who is nearing sixty
and has lived hereabouts all her life, charges Mrs. Josephine Alspaugh,
another old resident, with stealing her Job's affectiions.
Mrs. Alspaugh is a year or two older then Mrs. Bushong. Job's hair is
gray. The Bushongs have been married thirty-four years this month. Mrs.
Bushong in her suit just filed, values his affections at $5000.
"Job is the best on earth," she said Wednesday. "He is trusting and
good natured, and I am not going to let anyone take him away from me. He never
said Mrs. Alspaugh was his "affinity" or anything like that. He knows
better than to talk "affinity" to me. He is still at home with me, and I guess
he is not going to leave."
SHE GETS REAL VEXED
"A few nights ago I saw my husband meet Mrs. Alspaugh on the street.
They walked together with their arms locked. I stepped out in front of them
and I said: "Job Bushong. Is this you?" He did not say anything.
"I Just lit into the woman and when Job got me off, I had her shoe and
her jacket. I took them home, but both disappeared since then."
Mrs. Alspaugh said today: "No such thing happened. I did not see Job
Bushong that night. I never wrote any letters to Job Bushong and never stole
his affections."
"It is not true that he made me a present of a cord of wood. I paid for
that wood. The first time I ever met him was a year ago. I was running for
a train to meet some folks, and he asked me if anybody died. I said: "No
and was going on.. Mrs. Bushong sprang out in front of me and said: "I'll
teach you to talk to my husband."

the 35th Arkansas was in the...

The Battle of Bayou Fourche, sometimes called the Battle of Little Rock, was a battle in the American Civil War fought on September 10, 1863 east of the town of Little Rock, Arkansas. The battle was the culmination of a campaign launched by Maj. Gen. Fred Steele, on August 1, 1863 to capture Little Rock, Arkansas.[1] The campaign includes engagements at Westport, on 14 August, Harrison's Landing, on 16 August, Brownsville on 25 August, the Reed's Bridge, on 27 August, and Ashely's Mills on 7 September 1863.[2] After the Union army affected a river crossing east of Little Rock, effectively flanking the Confederate defenses north of the river, the Confederates staged a brief delaying action at Bayou Fourche to allow for evacuation of Little Rock. After the fall of Little Rock, Confederate forces retreated to Arkadelphia and Rockport,[3] and established a new state capitol at Washington, in Hempstead County, Arkansas.

Source: Wikipedia. My grandfather and his brothers were railroad men. Arthur, the youngest brother, was killed in a train wreck in McCurtain, Haskell County, Oklahoma. Their father (James Spratt) died a few months later; the family said it was from grief. My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were Masons.
You are right, W.H. and J. Spratt Bushong were on the Confederate side of the Civil War. My understanding is that "deserted" just means they didn't show up for roll call after a battle. I believe he was later discharged for some problem with his legs. After the war, he was briefly a postmaster, then went to school and served as a doctor in the Mountainburg, AR area.

James Bushong arrived with our letter and all the clothing that you so kindly sent us. ...Our clothes all fit us first rate and will be entirely sufficient to make us comfortable this winter. Our clothes were bragged on by all that saw them. ...

By James Bushong we send our summer pants (except the linen one which we will keep to use as drawers) together with our vests and cotton joseys, also both our knapsacks as we were ordered to draw knapsacks furnished by the Government, and the probability is we will have to carry our clothes after this. We are sorry having put Mother to the trouble of mak a new one and then so soon throwing it aside but there are many unforseen events happening in the army. Those that we drew are made out of heavy material having leather straps on them. We both have our knapsacks entirely full.

Give our regards and respects to Mr. Gill and family and also James Bushong. An archivist at the University of Louisville, who sent this:
From the information I have, James Spratt Bushong attended the University of Louisville Department of Medicine in 1868-69.
I have attached the catalog for 1869-70 which contains the information from the previous year with his name in the “matriculates” section (not alphabetized within each letter section).

I have also attached a copy of a page from the “Medical and Surgical Directory of the United States” for 1890. Dr. Bushong is listed as “legally authorized under the “years of practice” section of act.” That means he was practicing medicine without having graduated from medical school; however, in 1869, Arkansas (and most other states) did not require medical school graduation or a license to practice. From the information in the “Directory of Deceased American Physicians 1804-1929,” Dr. Bushong’s entry (below) shows that he was licensed in 1903, which could have been the year licenses were required in Arkansas.

From: Becky Palmer. Dr. James Spratt Bushong was educated in University of Louisville Department of Medicine, Lousiville, Kentucky, in 18688.
