7 September, at his home. He was a retired laborer.
He is survived by two stepsons, Pearl Long and Otis Johnson, both of
Hillsboro; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Georgette Donnell, Phoenix, Arizona.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hillsboro
Cemetery, with Rev. Homer King officiating and burial following under the
direction of Turner Funeral Home.

The first schoolhouse in Allen Township was a small log structure built in 1836 at a location near the Whetstone farm, afterward known as the Thicket school. It was built of round logs covered with a clapboard roof, had greased paper windows and a huge fireplace at one end.
Mrs. DeBouver then used the first schoolhouse in Van Buren as a dwelling. At this school, Peter May, L. M. Cramer, Richard Crawford, Elizabeth Crawford-Wise, Cyrena Bushong-Baker, J. B. Bushong, Ermma Bushong, Ola Mummert Gilmore and others learned the three “R’s” taught to the rule of a hickory stick. Some of the early teachers were Joe Kagy, Sadie Cumerine and Arch Dillinger.
About 1870 a two-room brick building was built on East Market Street. This building was later condemned and a four-room school was erected and used till 1917 when the schools of Allen Township were centralized and the present school building was erected. The school district was later enlarged to take in parts of Cass and Portage Townships.

William Kincaid was born on 26 May 1792 in Spencer, North Carolina. He and Nancy Gibbson were married on 23 April 1816 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He died about 1860, at age ~68, in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

Barb, there may be a mistake here where you state that "William McMurray who
married Hopson's daughter Sarah". From the information I have gathered I
found that Sallie (Sarah) Kinkead, daughter of John Kinkead / Elizabeth
Logan and sister to Hobson/Hopson Kinkead married a Samuel McMurray. One of
their children was named William McMurray. Sallie was born in Virginia and
Samuel was born in Buchanan's Station, Davidson County Tennessee.

My information for the above was gleaned from a McMurray posting to the
Kincaid-L and from the McMurray website.

27th day of May 1793. On motion of Sarah (Sallie) McMurry & John Kincaid,
who made oath & together with Hopson Kincaid & Robert Dougherty, their
securities, entered into and acknowledged their bond in sum of lbs300
conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is granted for them to obtain
letters of Administration of the estate of Samuel McMurry, deceased in due
form.


28th day of May 1793. Hobson and John Kincaid are involved as a witness with
the Estate of Samuel McMurry, (Brother-in-law that married sister Sallie)
Book 1, Page 17.



From my own information that I have collected over the years I find that I
have noted "Hobson married Sarah McClure in Virginia - 1782". She being the
daughter of Halbert McClure and Alice Young. (from the McClure Family
Website). Again from my notes "First male child (William) born to Hobson
Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1785 - Mercer County Kentucky". "Second male
child (Joseph) born to Hobson Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1794 - Clark
County Kentucky". "First female child (name unknown) born to Hobson Kinkead
and Sarah McClure - 1794 to 1804 - Clark County Kentucky". "Third male
child (James) born to Hobson Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1800 to 1804 -
Clark County Kentucky". "Second and third female children (names unknown)
born to Hobson Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1804 to 1810 in Barren County
Kentucky".

Here is an interesting side to this though, I also see that their last known
(known to me) child was named Simon Simpson McMurray and he was born during
the year 1796. Simon Simpson McMurray was married to Jane Clark whom was
born in Clark(e) Co. Kentucky during the year 1796.
Then there is this record: Hobson and Sarah (HIS wife) of Clark Co. Kentucky
sells 110 acres to James Clark. Deed Book 3, page 531.

Also I believe that the name "Hopson" was like a nick name because the
family surname was correctly spelled as HOBSON. I realize too that there
wasn't any spelling standards in those days.

NOTE: Hobson/Hopson Kinkead and Joseph Kinkead found on the 1820 Franklin
County Tennessee Census, living next door to each other.

Michael Joe/. Hi. I've been looking over the messages between Dennis House and Barb V. H.
Ben Kinkead is my cousin and we have been doing genealogy together for
several years. When I retired I set about to gather materials and write a
book about our family. I have written the book but am now editing and
trying to figure out about publishing it for our family branch. Short David
was the son of Joseph and Rebecca Calvert Kinkead. His wife Mary Williams
was the daughter of Robert Williams, who married Ann Calvert Kinkead,
Burroughs Kinkead's widow. Long David Kinkead was Short David's double
first cousin as he was the son of Ann and Burroughs. Both Davids lived in
Hawkins County, owned land near each other, were very close all their lives,
and died in the same year. Short David is buried on his farm and Long David
is buried in the Old Union Methodist Church Cemetery near Church Hill, TN.
Long David's heirs gave the building and the cemetery to the Methodist
Church. My cousin Ben is sick right now, but he hopes to get back to
genealogy soon. Hope this will answer some questions for you. Joan Kinkead
Hendricks. I do hope some of you will have the time to look over this post. It is quit
long and has perhaps some data that may not be necessary as part of the
proof, however David/Winifred is an important player among the VA Kincaids
so establishing his DNA profile accurately is of the utmost interest.

Since the name Joseph is not rare among Kincaids, special care has been made
to establish the connection of Joseph of Hawkins Co. TN with his brother
Burrough's family. Burrough is a rare name and the connection from
David/Winifred to David, son of Burrough, in Hawkins Co. is based on
inherited land transfers. Care has also been taken to show which David of
Hawkins Co. TN belonged to which brother. This does not affect the DNA
profile (it would still lead to David/Winifred) but does re-inforce the will
of Robert Williams in indicating that both David, son of Burrough and David,
son of Joseph lived in Hawkins Co. This will also provides the name of
Joseph of Hawkins Co's. wife which does not appear on deeds in either TN or
Amherst Co. (TN did not require wives to sign off and Amherst was very lax
about getting sign offs). Note however that Augusta Co. did get a sign off
from Rebecca of Washington Co. on land Joseph sold in Augusta (Hawkins from
Sullivan from Washington) which does coordinate the movement of Joseph with
the movement of Burrough's family. They have to be descendants of David/Winifred through son Joseph. Hawkins
County was formed from Sullivan County in 1787.

SUL 02/03/1780 HCDA(123) Joseph Kinkead issued 400a in Carters
Valley. Deed referenced in 1822 records in Hawkins County by David Kinkead.
See Feb. 1822 entries. The land was in Sullivan County then (not recorded).

Hi. Joseph Kinkead, son of David and Winifred Kinkead, was married to
Rebecca Calvert. Burroughs Kinkead, another son of David and Winifred
Kinkead, was married to Ann Calvert, Rebecca's sister. See John Calvert's
Will and also the land deeds -- this is where we are now, trying to get
copies of deeds and translating them. Joseph bought the furniture and all
from Randall Lockhart and the livestock and furniture from Nathaniel Lyon
on 20 June 1770 (Chalkley also) because he had lost all his belongings when
the Cherokee Indians chased him (and the other settlers) out of Hawkins
County, Tennessee (then Virginia). See J. G. M. Ramsey The Annals of
Tennessee to the End of the Eighteenth Century and also there is a Tennessee
[State] Historical Marker identifying Joseph as one of the first settlers
