> Could this last entry indicate that Hopson Kinkade, a witness to this
transaction, had by then moved to Jackson County, TN, perhaps along with Wm.
McMurtry? Barb, there may be a mistake here where you state that "William McMurray who
married Hopson's daughter Sarah". From the information I have gathered I
found that Sallie (Sarah) Kinkead, daughter of John Kinkead / Elizabeth
Logan and sister to Hobson/Hopson Kinkead married a Samuel McMurray. One of
their children was named William McMurray. Sallie was born in Virginia and
Samuel was born in Buchanan's Station, Davidson County Tennessee.

My information for the above was gleaned from a McMurray posting to the
Kincaid-L and from the McMurray website.

27th day of May 1793. On motion of Sarah (Sallie) McMurry & John Kincaid,
who made oath & together with Hopson Kincaid & Robert Dougherty, their
securities, entered into and acknowledged their bond in sum of lbs300
conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is granted for them to obtain
letters of Administration of the estate of Samuel McMurry, deceased in due
form.

28th day of May 1793. Hobson and John Kincaid are involved as a witness with
the Estate of Samuel McMurry, (Brother-in-law that married sister Sallie)
Book 1, Page 17.

From my own information that I have collected over the years I find that I
have noted "Hobson married Sarah McClure in Virginia - 1782". She being the
daughter of Halbert McClure and Alice Young. (from the McClure Family
Website). Again from my notes "First male child (William) born to Hobson
Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1785 - Mercer County Kentucky". "Second male
child (Joseph) born to Hobson Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1794 - Clark
County Kentucky". "First female child (name unknown) born to Hobson Kinkead
and Sarah McClure - 1794 to 1804 - Clark County Kentucky". "Third male
child (James) born to Hobson Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1800 to 1804 -
Clark County Kentucky". "Second and third female children (names unknown)
born to Hobson Kinkead and Sarah McClure - 1804 to 1810 in Barren County
Kentucky".

Here is an interesting side to this though, I also see that their last known
(known to me) child was named Simon Simpson McMurray and he was born during
the year 1796. Simon Simpson McMurray was married to Jane Clark whom was
born in Clark(e) Co. Kentucky during the year 1796.
Then there is this record: Hobson and Sarah (HIS wife) of Clark Co. Kentucky
sells 110 acres to James Clark. Deed Book 3, page 531.

Also I believe that the name "Hopson" was like a nick name because the
family surname was correctly spelled as HOBSON. I realize too that there
wasn't any spelling standards in those days.

NOTE: Hobson/Hopson Kinkead and Joseph Kinkead found on the 1820 Franklin
County Tennessee Census, living next door to each other.

Subject: [KINCAID] Hopson Kincade records in Barren Co, KY

| These are records for Hopson Kinkead in Barren Co, KY. The time frame is
1799-1810. (Records are not posted here in order of time, but rather as I
found them and copied them to this e-mail.)
|
| Notice a John Kincade in 1804, 1807, and 1808. He was a chain carrier,
marking off the boundary of the land. This appears to be Hopson's son. Also
I think that the Wm Murtry with wife Sarah in the following records is the
William McMurray who married Hopson's daughter Sarah. They lived next to
each other in Barren County. There is a connection with Jackson County, TN
shown here too. Need to look at records in that county.

|. HOBSON KINCAID’S MARRIAGE TO SARAH MCCLURE

Following is an excerpt from the “Life and Times of General Samuel Dale, The
Mississippi Partisan. By J.F.H. Claiborne, Illustrated by John McLenan. New
York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, and Frankin Square 1860.

“For several months after this we were not troubled, and my brother and
myself were boarded about ten miles off, at Halbert McClure’s, to go to
school. Returning one morning from a visit home, we fell in with old Mr.
Bush, of Castlewood Fort, who informed us that he saw Shawnee “signs” about,
and that we must go back to Glade Hollow and give the alarm.

Unfortunately, father had left the day before for the salt works on Holston
River, and mother and the children were alone. About nine at night we saw
two Indians approaching. Mother immediately threw a bucket of water on the
fire to prevent them from seeing us, made us lie on the floor, bolted and
barred the door, and posted herself there with an axe and rifle. We never
knew why they desisted from an attack, or how father escaped, who rode up
three hours afterward.

“In two or three days all of us set out for Clinch Mountain, to the wedding
of Hoppy (Hobson) Kincaid, a clever young fellow from Holston, and Sally
McClure, a fine, bouncing girl of seventeen, modest and pretty, yet fearless
and free. We knew the Shawnees were about, that our fort and household
effects must be left unguarded, and might probably be destroyed. That we
incurred the risk of a fight or an ambuscade, capture, and even death on the
route; but in those days, in that wild country, folks did not calculate
consequences closely, and the temptation to a frolic – a wedding, a feast,
and a dance till daylight, and often for several days together was not to be
resisted, and off we went.

“In half an hour we fell in with Captain Barnett and twenty men from
Holston, who warned us that Indians were about, and that he was scouting for
them. Father, ever eager for a fight, joined this company, and we trudged on
to Clinch Mountain. Instead of the bridal party, the well-spread table, the
ringing laughter, and the sounding feet of buxom dancers, we found a pile of
ashes and six or seven ghastly corpses, tomahawked and scalped.

Poor Hardy McClure was dead; several others lay around. One daughter was
still breathing but soon expired. Mrs. McClure, her infant, and three other
children, including Sally, the intended bride, had been carried off by the
savages. They soon tore the poor infant from its mother’s arms, and killed
and scalped it, that she might travel faster. While they were scalping this
child, Peggy McClure, a girl of twelve years old, perceived a sinkhole
immediately at her feet, and dropped silently into it. It communicated with
a ravine, down which she ran, and brought the news into the settlements. The
Indians were too apprehensive of pursuit to search for her. The same night,
Sally, who had been tied and forced to lie down between two warriors,
contrived to loosen her thongs and make her escape. She struck for the
canebrake, then for the river, and, to conceal her trail, resolved to
descend it. It was deep wading, and the current so rapid she had to fill her
petticoat with gravel to steady herself.

She soon, however, recovered confidence, returned to shore, and finally
reached the still smoking homestead about dark next evening. A few
neighbors, well armed, had just buried the dead. Kincaid was among them. The
last prayer had been said when the orphan girl stood before them, and was
soon in the arms of her lover. Resolved to leave no more to chance, at his
entreaty and by the advice of all, the weeping girl gave her consent, and by
the grave of the household and near the ruined dwelling they were
immediately married. Actually, when it stated that Kincaid was among them, the story was
reflecting that Hobson ("Hoppy") Kincaid was there because of his future
wife. She was lucky enough to have escaped from the Shawnee only to find
that her entire family had been murdered. Hobson and Sarah ("Sally")
McClure were married then and there.

I don't know how much of the story has been misconstrued over the years
because Sarah's mother, Alice McClure didn't pass away until the year 1829.
This event supposedly took place during the 1780's. There are several
versions of the event as they were all posted on the McClure web site at one
time or another.

I have more information from the RW pension application of Robert Kinkead,
b. 1761, and also the son of John Kinkead/Elizabeth Logan. Robert said that
he was at Elk Garden in 1776 in Capt. John Kingcade's Company under Col. A.
Campbell---and he was young, only 15 years old. At the KYBARREN list at rootsweb.com are more records that name Hopson Kincade and there appear to be possibly two Joseph Kincade/Kincaids, as well as a John Kincade and a Wm Kinkade.

David Stewart of the Old Union church in Monroe County, KY also moved and

"David STEWART, a minister, bought the farm from the Government in April,

The Joseph Kinkead who was the son of John Kinkead/Elizabeth Logan and
younger brother of Hobson was born in February 1774. Do you know the birth
year of your Joseph/Elizabeth's first child?

In the 1792 Clark County, KY Tax list, there is a Hopson Kendred, Andrew
Kincaid, David Kincaid, Joseph Kincaid. Also there is a James Downing and
a
Samuel Downing. Under the Stewart name is a David Stewart and David
Stewart, Jr. I have noticed a pattern of migration of families from Clark
County to Barren County, KY.

The above Hopson, David, and Joseph are probably brothers. I don't know
what family Andrew belongs to.

In half an hour we fell in with Captain BARNETT and twenty men from Holston, who warned us that Indians were about, and that he was scouting for them. Father, ever eager for a fight, joined this company, and we trudged on to Clinch Mountain. Instead of the bridal party, the well-spread table, the ringing laughter, and the sounding feet of buxom dancers, we found a pile of ashes and six or seven ghastly corpses, tomahawked and scalped. Poor Hardy McCLURE was dead; several others lay around. One daughter was still breathing but soon expired. Mrs. McCLURE, her infant, and three other children, including Sally, the intended bride, had been carried off by the savages. They soon tore the poor infant from its mother?s arms, and killed and scalped it, that she might travel faster. While they were scalping this child, Peggy McCLURE, a girl of twelve years old, perceived a sinkhole immediately at her feet, and dropped silently into it. It communicated with a ravine, down which she ran, and brought the news into the settlements. The Indians were too apprehensive of pursuit to search for her. The same night, Sally, who had been tied and forced to lie down between two warriors, contrived to loosen her thongs and make her escape. She struck for the canebrake, then for the river, and, to conceal her trail, resolved to descend it. It was deep wading, and the current so rapid she had to fill her petticoat with gravel to steady herself. She soon, however, recovered confidence, returned to shore, and finally reached the still smoking homestead about dark next evening. A few neighbors, well armed, had just buried the dead. KINCAID was among them. The last prayer had been said when the orphan girl stood before them, and was soon in the arms of her lover. Resolved to leave no more to chance, at his entreaty and by the advice of all, the weeping girl gave her consent, and by the grave of the household and near the ruined dwelling they were immediately married."

Biography

David Kincaid was born in 1692 in Parish of Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He and Winnifred Hobson were married in 1717. He died in 1779, at age ~87, in Washington County, Virginia.
Our
branch of the Kinkeads is directly descended from David and Winifred Hobson
Kinkead. We have not yet discovered whether "our" David was the David who
was the son of James, Laird, or his son David who came with him from
Scotland in 1715. This is what I can prove about our David:
He was a master carpenter. From 1732 - 1744 he was building for St. Mark
Parish Church in Orange Co., VA (old Spotsylvania Co.) ; in 1746 he built
the first courthouse in Augusta Co., VA; in 1751 he built the first jail in
Augusta Co., VA ( in 1773 - 1774, his son Joseph built the second jail
there); from 1746 - 1770, he made many land purchases and sales in
Albermarle Co. and Augusta Co., VA and his wife Winifred was named in some
of the deeds; around 1770 he moved to Hayters Gap, Washington County, VA,
where he bought land; he died in 1779 and his Will was probated 20 May 1779
in Abingdon, VA, courthouse. The children named in his Will were John Sr.,
who married Elizabeth Logan; Joseph (my ancestor) who married Rebecca
Calvert , and who was one for the first two settlers in Hawkins Co., TN;
Burroughs, who married Ann Calvert (Rebecca's sister) and who was killed by
Indians in 1763; Hobson; and Elizabeth, who married a Samson. Other
children "our" David may have had were David, Jr..; Andrew; Jean Jane who
married Robert Guinn; and Isabella who married Captain James Lockridge.

David was a plantation owner with slaves, and apparently, none too nice

tobacco himself?

He got paid for building the road, but I bet he didn't do one bit of the actual work. He may have hired workmen, as indicated in one of the records below.

Perhaps if you looked at all the early records I have for David you would
see a different picture. There is one record for assault and battery.

David (Winifred) wasn't the nicest guy in the world. Here is the complete
set of pre-Albemarle records that I have. He was a real character (for wont
of stronger words) Did you ever see anyone hauled into court so often in
your life.

Winifred herself is a witness.

request of the sd Winifred in behalfe of her two Children the same was
ordered to be recorded.

NOTE: Since the Tillary Children had to be very small, and lived
with David Kinkead from then on, is it possible that they took the Kinkead
name? If so, this John could possibly be the Clerk. It's unlikely, but can't
be discounted. Also, there are no records of Lockridges or Grahams (with
which David's children intermarried) in Spotsylvania from 1724-1742.

* It is not known if Willis Kincade of Hawkins Co. Tennessee, has the Kincaid name as a slave name or a paternal name.

It is not know how many slaves David "Short" Kincaid had. In his father in law's will, dated September 30, 1786, Robert Williams bequeths the first two slave children, born to a slave wench.

David's grandfather had slave, at least three of his children owned slaves.

seems to be for the second husband of Ann Calvert Kincaid. Notice at the end
of the will Robert Williams said, "I appoint and nominate my wife Ann, her
son David Kinkead, and David Kinkead her sister's son (sic) to be my sole

Notice also that Robert Williams mentions his daughter Mary. Perhaps it was
this Mary Williams who became the wife of Joseph's son David.

The western side of the Southern Appalachian Mountains was the Western Frontier during the 1700-1830 period of American History.
The hardy families that attempted to carve a home out of the wilderness defied British Rule and faced Indian tribes that were not always friendly.
The ancestors and descendants of some of those pioneers are included in the following family genealogies:

Joseph KINKEAD, arrived in Hawkins County, Tennessee, before 1750

David Kinkead/Mary Williams Burial Site;
David Kinkead and Mary Williams Kinkead were buried on their land in family cemetery near present day Mt. Carmel, TN. In 1983 Edgar Ellis had the headstones of David and Mary in his garage. He had salvaged them from the field where David and Mary were buried when the current owner had turned the cattle into the pasture. He had intended on placing them in the Wills Cemetery. The Wills Cemetery is where David and Mary's son Edwards was buried. Edwards widow had remarried to Hiram Wills and the property became known as the Wills place and Wills Cemetery. Edgar Ellis was a descendant of Edwards Kinkead. Edgar Ellis states on family group sheet for David Kinkead and Mary Williams family that the cemetery was almost totally destroyed by Harvey Brooks Land Sales. It states on his group sheet that the information was taken from Bible Records of Family and cemetery stones. His group sheet lists Joseph Kinkead and Rebecca as the parents of Short David Kinkead. He also noted that Samuel Addison Kinkead son of David/Mary had Calvert family records in his bible but was never able to obtain the information from descendants that had the bible. Compiler-Edgar Ellis, dated Feb 9 1938, Mt.Carmel,
Tennessee. Source of Information: From the research of Mildred Emmert Sutton, grand daughter of Williams Kinkead and Susan Frances Hagood.
------this kind of confuses me as to whether this cemetery actually exists anymore?-----

9/13/2015 rec'd this response to the photo request:
The cemetery is well kept and easily walkable in a short time. I found David Kinkead, Jr (though his stone does not reflect 'jr') and his wife, Mary, but did not find David Sr (1780-1829). The cattle pastureland story and destruction of the stones was confirmed by the elderly niece of a woman buried there. She related that slaves were buried there, too, though no evidence remains. There are no broken stones or markers. Sorry.
