Find A Grave Memorial# 96353518. Former Muscogee County School District superintendent Bob Bushong dies at 75
Published: September 6, 2011
By RICHARD HYATT — Special to the Ledger-Enquirer

Three times Muscogee County dialed Bob Bushong’s number and three times he agreed to take control of the school district following eventful moments that drained morale, shattered confidence and left the system floundering.

He stepped in as interim superintendent after the suicide of friend and boss Braxton Nail in 1989. He assumed that same title after the murder of Jim Burns in 1992 and again in 2002 after a breach between the school board and the administration developed during the tenure of Guy Sims.

“My legacy will be that I was an interim school superintendent. I know that,” Bushong once said. “I’ve come to accept the fact that this is why I was put here.”

Bushong served the Muscogee County School District for nearly 30 years, assuming leadership roles during tumultuous situations that others chose to avoid, providing stability when it was needed most.

He finally retired to the shores of North Carolina in 2002 and early this morning Bushong died after a recurring battle with cancer. He was 75.

With his wife JoAnne and her daughters at his side, the veteran educator died at a hospital in Wilson, N.C. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Former school board member Fife Whiteside agrees that Bushong’s legacy will be the times he spent in an interim role. “He could figure out what needed to be done and he would do it. He had the type of character that enabled him to do what needed to be done.”

During stressful circumstances Bushong was ready to act, Whiteside added. “He was always a strong superintendent — probably the strongest we’ve ever had.”

Former superintendent Jim Buntin worked alongside Bushong for years. In addition to his loyalty to the school district, he said Bushong should be remembered for his stewardship. “He always did a good job taking care of the money. You need someone who will keep an eye on finances and that was Bob.”

Though he twice was given the title of superintendent, the years he spent as a stand-in are most remembered. As Whiteside once observed, that is a calling few accept. “I just like to think there are some people who have the talent for being able to step up to the plate when there are problems with little hope of glory. I’ve always thought Bob Bushong was one of those people.”
