Per a posting on K-Fen, Olivia P. Brisbin, frequently cite d authority, has this individual as William Harrison KINCAI D.
Mariana Wilkes has the following:
"The 1840 Census for Claiborne County listed William K incaid as having 1 male child under 5 years of age, 1 betwe en 5 and 10 years, 3 between 10 and 15 years, and presumabl y himself between 40 and 50. There were 2 female children u nder the age of 5, 1 between 15 and 20 and then presumabl y his wife who was between the ages of 30 and 40.They had t hree male slaves and eight female slaves: one male under th e age of 10, 2 between 10 and 24 years and three female sla ves under the age of 10, one between 10 and 24 and 4 betwee n 24 and 36. Their occupation is listed as agriculture. T here were no Revolutionary Waror other militaty pensioner s in the family per the Census.
Deeds were reviewed for Claiborne County between the y ears of 1801 and 1865. William Kincaid was very active i n buying and selling land. As noted in The History of Clai borne County, a William Kincaid had 80 00 acres of land i n Claiborne County. His apparent sons: John W., Junior, M. L., J.M., S.C., James M. were also active in land transacti ons during those years.
From the Census, Marriage, And Deed information for Cl aiborne County, it's believed that William Kincaid had si x sons: Marshall born in 1833; William C. born cir 1835; Jo hn W. born cir 1830; Sterling C. date of birth unknown; an d James M. date of birth unknown. Birthdates were later ob tained and added.
From the deed records, it appears William Kincaid's estate was sold off by his heirs in 1857.
William Kincaid is listed in the 1850 Census for Claiborne County, Tennessee as living with his wife, Susan, an d most of his children. The farm is Dwelling 1352 and is i n the 7th Sub-Division of the Census. The children livin g with him are: John, age 22, farmer; James M. 20, farmer ; Marshal L. 18, farmer; Nancy, 16; William, 14; Doreas, 12 ; Harrison, 10; Lafayette 8; Harriet, 6; and Alvis, 2.Nancy , William, Doreas, Harrison, and Lafayette are listed as at tending school. In addition a John Alder, 31, farmer, is l iving with them per the census record.
. . . . .
According to the People's History of Claiborne County , Tennessee 1801 -1988, "Wm. Harrison Kincaid, using slav e labor, built a famous brick house, now known as the Bil l Russell home, near Speedwell in Claiborne County, with th e home now being included in the National Register of Histo ric Places..." Kincaids were of Scottish ancestry. He an d Susan had 12 childr en in all.
Per "Early Iron Industry of Norris Area" by M.A.Wilson , in a quote from John Keck, age 88 in 1935 and living on B ig Barren Creeknot far from the site of Kincaid Forge. Acc ording to John Keck, Billy Kincaid built a house and reare d his family at the place where Bill Russell lives now, nea r the head of Davis Creek. He later built a large brick ho use on Big Barren Creek in 1853, two years before his death . He also built other brick houses, including the Rogers , Ausmus, and Jordon Longmire homes. When he died, he lef t $10,000 for each of his children in addition to his rea l property.
Per "Early Iron Industry of Norris Area" by M.A.Wilson , in aquote fr om John Keck, age 88 in 1935 and living on B ig Barren Creek not far from the site of Kincaid Forge, the re is a son called Rufe S. Kincaid. Other ac counts indica te Rufe was son of Ritchie. This same reference lists Willi am 's children as M.D.L. (Lafayette), Alvis S., Harrison, S terling, Marsh, William and Mag.
The Claiborne County Will Book 1855-1866, Film 0464089 , gives an inventory of Notes and other belongings from th e Estate of William Kincaid. There is no date on it but i t follows the Year's support provided to Susan Kincaid, Wil liam's widow which is dated may 26, 1855. Note Isaac Thoma s and S.C. Kincaid are administrators of the Estate. Ther e are 52 pages of notes/inventory of the Estate. It enumer ates slaves. Based on the contents, William was a very wea lthy man. There are also, listed second, fourth and fift h inventories in the settlement of the estate. There are n o dates on these settlements.
The Claiborne County Will Book 1855-1866, Film 0464089 , includes a settlement of William Kincaid Guardian to on e of Henry Lee's heirs. It is dated September 19, 1852. Th e same film includes a Guardian Settlement to William Kinca id for the Thos. McClain heirs dated December 1, 1847.
The above source, Claiborne County Will Book 1855-186 6 includes a Guardian Settlement to James M. Kincaid for th e care of Lafayette, William, Alvis, and Harriet, heirs o f William Kincaid. The settlements are dated June 2, 1856 . There is another settlement to James M. for Lafayette an d Harriet dated June 2, 1857; a third for Alvis, Harriet, L afayette dated June 2, 1858; and a fourth for William date d November 3, 1856.
The Claiborne County Will Book 1855-1866, Film 0464089 , includes a Guardian Settlement with M.L.Kincaid, dated Ju ne 2, 1856 for Harrison H. Kincaid, heir to William Kincaid.
It, therefore, appears, after William's death, Lafayet te, William, Jr ., Alvis, and Harriet were taken in by thei r older brother, James M. Kincaid; and Harrison was taken i n by his older brother, Marshal.
The 1860 Census lists Marshall, now married, living wi th his wife, their son, James, and Marshall's brother Lafay ette, a Richard Paul, and another listed as what appears t o be Deck Paul. Deck Paulis listed as age 17 as is Lafayet te. Richard Paul is 21."

Dennis,
Hi again. Concerning the marriage of Susan WILSON and Will iamHarrison
KINCAID.
Go the Website for Tennessee State Acts and you will get a n index.Punch in
KINCAID and you will get some information on William Harris on KINCAIDand
his marriage to Susan WILSON. According to the Private Act s ofTennessee,
William Harrison KINCAID went into court and had the name s of his
illigetimate children Manerva Jane WILSON and Sterling Co x WILSON,changed
to KINCAID. We know that John Wilson KINCAID was born in 1 828, so the
marriage must have took place sometime between the birth o f SterlingCox an d
John Wilson. Very Interesting? You may want to follow u p on this andsend
in your 3.00 to the state archives in Nashville and get th e actualcopies.
I note on the index on the website that this took place i n WILSONCounty an d
I think this may have been a mistake with the name WILSON . I wouldfeel
comfortable in saying they were married in CLAIBORNE County . This iswhere
he lived and he lived there for many years before he marrie d Susan.
Unfortunately, all the marriage records for CLAIBORNE Count y before1838
were destroyed! Hope this helps. If you are ever in CLAIB ORNECounty, loo k
me up and I'll take you to the KINCAID Cemetery where Willi am andSusan are
buried beside the huge plantation home still standing tha t was builtby his
slaves.
