Mrs. Abigail Bushong, wife of the late Andrew J. Bushong, died Tuesday evening at 5 o'clock at her home in Van Buren, aged 69. Mrs. Bushong had been sick ten months with a complication of diseases. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. B. F. Baker, Van Buren; Mrs. H. J. Guthrie, Toledo; Mrs. M. R. Hess, Van Buren; Bert Bushong, Van Buren township, Edward L. Bushong, of Van Buren. The deceased was a steadfast Christian and a member of the United Brethren Church many years. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the church. Rev. J. H. Arnold will officiate. The body will be laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

The first schoolhouse in Allen Township was a small log structure built in 1836 at a location near the Whetstone farm, afterward known as the Thicket school. It was built of round logs covered with a clapboard roof, had greased paper windows and a huge fireplace at one end.
Mrs. DeBouver then used the first schoolhouse in Van Buren as a dwelling. At this school, Peter May, L. M. Cramer, Richard Crawford, Elizabeth Crawford-Wise, Cyrena Bushong-Baker, J. B. Bushong, Ermma Bushong, Ola Mummert Gilmore and others learned the three “R’s” taught to the rule of a hickory stick. Some of the early teachers were Joe Kagy, Sadie Cumerine and Arch Dillinger.
About 1870 a two-room brick building was built on East Market Street. This building was later condemned and a four-room school was erected and used till 1917 when the schools of Allen Township were centralized and the present school building was erected. The school district was later enlarged to take in parts of Cass and Portage Townships.

William L. Bushong, 68, brother of J. T. Bushong, died suddenly this
morning at 5 o'clock at his home in Van Buren. Funeral arrangements are
incomplete. Mr. Bushong was ill only four hours.

Charles Henry Bushong was born on 14 May 1875 in Mountainburg, Crawford County, Arkansas. He and Luella Louisana Bushong were married on 16 January 1902 in Mountainburg, Crawford County, Arkansas. Services conducted for J. T. (Tom) Bushong, 88, a former resident of Fort Smith, Arkansas, was conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at the Prairie Grove Arkansas Christian Church, with the pastor officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites, were at the Gill cemetery. Bushong a retired engineer for the old Fort Smith and Western Railroad, was a member of the First Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge of Mountainburg and Cherokee Lodge No. 428 of the Brotherhood of Locomotive fireman and Engineers of Van Buren, Arkansas. Survivors include one son, Thomas Bushong, a member of the Westville school faculty; one daughter Mrs. Felix Olim of Dallas, Texas; two brothers R. A. and J. A. Bushong both of Canal Point, Florida; and seven grandchildren.

"Died at his residence on Park Street yesterday, February 23, 1894 at 4:50 pm,
J. L. BUSHONG, aged 67 years. Funeral services at his late residence, 302 Park
Street tomorrow, February 25, at 10 am conducted by Rev. George W. Dalbey,
pastor of the Avenue Free Methodist E. Church of Hutchinson, KS.
Joseph remained on the farm with his parents until the death of his father, and
two years later he made the journey to New Orleans on a flat boat. After
spending some three years there, he came back to his mother's home and for some
years was employed as a farm hand in his mother's community by various farmers.
In 1853 he went to Iowa with a family named Zaring, with whom he was employed
for about a year, when he married Lydia Ann, a daughter of that family. For
many years he had his home near Fremont, Iowa. In 1851 he was converted, and
lived henceforth a good Christian life, becoming a clergyman of the Free
Methodist Church and died in Hutchinson, KS. Of his five sons and twelve
daughters, only one son lived, James, while 9 of the daughters lived.

Lydia Ann Zaring was born on 16 April 1836 in Washington County, Indiana. She and Rev. Joseph Long Bushong were married on 13 April 1854 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. She died on 26 January 1899, at age 62, in Denver, Arapaho County, Colorado.

the cemetery says January 29th...possibly that was the date of burial.

Funeral services were held at 2 O'clock Wednesday afternoon December 16, 1936 at the Wilcox-Garland Chapel. Burial in the Cedar Township Cemetery at Fremont, Iowa.

WILLIAM H. SHEARER was left fatherless when but a small child, and as he grew in years he assisted his mother in the care of the farm. When he had reached the age of thirty-one years he established a home of his own by his marriage to Flora Ellen Bushong, who was reared in Ohio and Texas. She is a daughter of Hiram and Naomi (Saulsbury) Bushong, in whose family were four children: Flora Ellen Shearer, William F., Esther Belle and Lydia Barnes. Mrs. Bushong was born in Putnam county, Ohio, and there she was also reared, but her death occurred in Texas. Mr. Bushong resides in New Mexico.
