Orville B. Oard, 81, of Gladwin died Saturday, April 15, 2000 at the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. Born Nov. 25, 1918 in Gladwin County, he was the son of S. Boyd and Virgie (Bushong) Oard. Orville married Irene Emmendorfer, Oct. 18, 1947 in Saginaw. He was self-employed in the excavating business for 48 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 19th Station Hospital in Iran and is a lifetime member of VFW Post 7303. Orville was a trustee with the Hay Township Board for many years. He was an avid hunter, loved to travel, and enjoyed his grandchildren.
Besides his wife he is survived by seven daughters, Carolyn Swanstra of Gladwin, Cathryn and husband Harold Loar of Beaverton, Cheryl-Oard-Irish of Flint, Cynthia and husband Charles Simmons of Alma, Patricia Oard-Moore and husband Richard Moore of Midland, Pamela Oard of Niles, and Barbara and husband Scott Buckley of Danville, Va.; one son, William and wife Darlene of Gladwin; two brothers, Max and Gerald, both of Gladwin; two sisters, Mary Jane Brushaber and Betty Jean Myers, both of Beaverton; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cherlyn Anne in 1950.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Rev. James Hoggard officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 1 p.m. today (Wednesday). Memorials may be made to the World War II War Memorial or the VFW Post 7303. Gladwin

Max worked in the Midway Tools oil fields until 1953 and then worked as a Pipefitter at Dow Chemical in Midland until he retired in 1980. He was member of Dale United Methodist Church, and Gladwin Eagles Aerie 3292. Max liked to travel and enjoyed hunting and being home walking in his woods. He loved growing a garden.
He is survived by his wife Betty Oard of Gladwin; his children Robert Dennis (Connie) Oard and Linda (William) Russell, both of Gladwin, and Sally Whitman of Beaverton; his grandchildren, John Whitman, Tina Krocker, Sharon Klienhardt, Bob Russell, Tim Russell, Autumn Russell, Lisa Gingerich, Mike Oard and Kristine Oard; 12 Great grandchildren; his brother Gerald Oard of Gladwin; and his sisters Mary Jane Brushaber and Betty Myers, both of Beaverton. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Orville Oard.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister: Mary Thorington; brothers: Grover & John Bushong.

Mary was active at the nursing home with activities and helping and caring for other patients there.
Surviving are one son, Allen “Ted” (Joyce) Thorington of Linwood; one daughter, Sharon (Denny) Russell of Midland; a daughter-in-law, Jan Thorington of Midland; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Pat) Bushong of Gladwin; one sister-in-law, Nellie Bushong of Gladwin; and several nieces, nephews and special friends. MAX THORINGTON
Max A. Thorington, 60, of 840 Sugar River Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Monday in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Gladwin on August 17, 1920, he moved away and then back to Gladwin County in 1972 from Bay County. Mr. Thorington was a self-employed barber. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the DAV Gateway Chapter 137 in Clare. He and the former Mary Bushong were married on October 27, 1940, in Gladwin.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Max Jr. of Northville, Allen (Ted) of Crump and John of Gladwin; 2 daughters, Kay of Gladwin and Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Russell of Midland; 2 brothers, Roy of Holly, Mrs. Eliza Wager, Mrs. Cora Hutson, Mrs. Helen Wheeler and Mrs. Faye Edick of Gladwin, Mrs. Mable Gute of Chesaning and Mrs. Ruth Scott of Marbury, Ala.; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Melvin Stauffer will officiate and burial will be in the Butman Cemetery.

1920, in Bremen, Ohio, to Chester and Mary Hilliard.
Nellie was raised in Sweetgrass, Montana, moving to Gladwin, Michigan during the Oil boom, where she met and married Grover Bushong. They had six children, and she was a wonderful wife and mother. She worked at Gladwin Manufacturing for several years. Nellie then went to Ashcraft's and worked in the bakery for 10 years. After she retired, she worked as a demo person at Ashcraft's. Besides spending time with her family and friends,. Nellie's passion was baking cookies by the dozens, which she enjoyed greatly giving away to many people, including total strangers.
She is survived by her daughters; Betty (Joe) Coats, Mary Ellen (Jack) Sherlock, and Debbie (Bill) Platt,
all of Gladwin; 20 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; a brother:
Ray Hilliard of Arizona; several nieces and nephews; a very special niece: Linda Canham of Washington; brother and sister-in-law: Pat and Jim Bushong of Gladwin; and many, many friends. She is preceded in death by her husband: Grover; parents; 3 sons: Chet, Tom and Robert "Bobcat"; 2
sisters; and 2 brothers.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at 1 p.m. with visitation beginning at
10 a.m. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeal Home in Gladwin. She will be laid to rest at Highland Cemetery in

Chester L. Bushong, 27, of Midland, died Sunday, June 6, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. Born in Gladwin on January 15, 1949, he worked in Midland as a carpenter the past year, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion Berryhill Post 165 of Midland, and of the Eagles Club of All-Bright Shores.
He graduated from Gladwin High School in 1967, and was married to the former Sherry Dapprich in Sanford on March 1, 1969. Surviving are his wife, Sherry; three children, Brian, Michelle and Kevin, all at home; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Bushong of Gladwin; two brothers, Robert of Butte, Montana and Tom of Midland; and three sisters, Mrs. Ken (Betty) Clark, Mrs. Jack (Mary Ellen) Sherlock and Debra Bushong, all of Gladwin.
Services are to be held today, Wednesday, at the Mathew's Funeral Home in Gladwin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Lindberg officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 06-09/1976 Column - 4 Page - 2
