An accomplished portrait photographer from Worcester, Bushong joined the AAN (Artist Association of Nantucket) in 1952. She moved to the island in 1955. Bushong was self- taught, using a sophisticated folk-art approach. Along with her brother Bobby, she helped craft the social circuit of artists that dominated the 60’s on island. Bobby was famous for his outrageous sense of humor; Polly was known for attending parties dressed as a mysterious character Cora Pratt, in outlandish wigs and buck teeth.

Estimated Age at Death: 81. Miss Cora Pratt, the Counterfeit Lady, is fashioned of a set of teeth, an old wig, beads, brooches, feathers and laces out of the attic, and the whimsical inclination of Polly Bushong who has been practicing this little hoax for nearly twelve years. It really began longer ago than that, for when she was just a child, Polly’s father, a socially prominent New England gentleman, introduced the parlour game of shocking people by wearing a crenelated slice of raw potato under the upper lip as buck teeth. It remained for Polly, years later, to purchase a fine and monstrous extra row of real false teeth and to pursue the game to its logical conclusion by occasionally becoming someone else, which she has done with such inspiration and cunning that she has never once been found out.
If Polly is a delightful, witty and talented Dr. Jekyll, Cora is a guileless, rapturous and preposterous Mr. Hyde, who commits the most unerring blunders and cheerfully treads where angels fear to. Once Cora Appeared, by prearrangement with the host, as the maid at an elegant New York cocktail party – attended by a dazzling array of steel tycoons, shipping magnates and theatrical luminaries – wearing a permanently crumpled uniform and a pair of saddle shoes, she surreptitiously sipped the drinks as she served them, blew the ashes out of the ashtrays in full view of the aghast guests, solicitously offered pieces of cheese on her outstretched hand, and fell asleep in a corner of the living room.

Whimsy Wins The Day For Painter
By Vivian Brown
Nantucket (AP)
Trick dogs, clowns, cats, Victorian sofas, babies and little girls in pantaloons from the easel of Polly Bushong, have proved successful here in the last three years. And Polly has spent the winter getting ready for the tourist season with more of the same,
The usual artist offerings - seascapes, whales, beach flowers, and marine art - had a lean season last year but Polly's show was virtually a sell-out. Her formula? Make them smile.
"You know in these times, people want to be amused. There is enough trouble in the world without being dreary in art......" she explained.
But there is more to it than that. Lots of the whimsy that shows up in her art is born of nostalgic recollections of stories implanted in the childhood by he father, an artist and photographer. His boyhood included being a champion bronco rider and bicycle rider, and building toy steam engines, a windmill to operate his mothers butter churn and other contraptions to help cut down his farm chores, He also conducted magic shows,
Tin Lizzies
Those ideas thread their way through Polly's little paintings. There are the tin lizzies, bicycles, horses, and carriages. A dog may be standing on his hind legs on a sofa while his mistress sits primly. Or a clown may be holding a handful of balloons as he stands on a lawn. The paintings are fun and a carriage of babies can be hilarious. Florida Death Index, 1877-1998
