"In the first two encounters the fourteen fought one to five of the enemy. We captured all of the prisoners, captured one-third of the enemy with their horses, killed and shot up one-third, and the remaining third was straggling back to Winchester with their dead and wounded.

We had one horse killed in the encounter at the toll gate and one man mortally wounded in the first encounter, George Bushong, a mere boy who had not reached his seventeeth year, young in years but brave, and he fought with the nerve of a Commanche until he went down. We buried him in the family cemetery with honors of war on the following Wednesday evening and planted the Stars and Bars by his grave."

ANOTHER OLD CONFEDERATE SOLDIER HAS PASSED AWAY
"Col. Isaac A. Bushong has passed away at his home near Archie Va., on
Monday at 9 p.m., aged 86.
Col. Bushong was at Harper's Ferry at the time of John Brown's raid and in
61 organized Company A. of the 58th Va. Infantry.
The writer remembers seeing Col. Bushong at the head of his regiment, a
picture of a soldier, his long flowing beard, his erect and commanding carriage
gave him the apperance of a model commander as he was. Col. Bushong was
conservative in politics, a good pious guarding of his children and grand-children,
a good citizen and will be much missed in his neighborhood, where he has for
many years resided, a consistent member of the Lutheran Church and a true
Confederate Soldier was he."

THE GUARD AT JOHN BROWN'S HANGING

Sir. --- In your paper of Sunday last, under the caption of "Story of John Brown Hanging by the Only Guard Now Living," it is stated that John Wilson Orr is believed to be the sole survivor of the guard that did duty during the capture and hanging of John Brown, and it is further said that some time ago "aftre a thorough search of the country and a wide-spread correspondence, only about three of the survivors could be located." I write to say that this "search" must have been made with very imperfect knowledge of the companies which were on duty at Charlestown at and prior to the execution of John Brown. I was an officer of one of the companies on duty on the day of the execution of John Brown, and I am glad to be able to say that I am still alive. Two large companies marched together from Augusta county to Harper's Ferry and Charlestown. One was the West Augusta Guard, then commanded by First Lieutenant James H. Waters, late chief of Police of the city of Staunton, who is still living, and the other, known as the Spring Hill Company, then commanded by Captain A. Bushong
Both of these companies marched together to Harper's Ferry at the beginning of the Civil War, and served together during the war in the Fifth Regiment of Virginia Infantry, of the "Stonewall Brigade."
The West Augusta Guard was from the city of Staunton and its immediate vicinity, and since reading the article above mentioned, I have made a list of eleven names of men known to have been with the west Augusta Guard at the execution of John Brown, and known to me to be now living. A careful examination would result in adding more names to the list. The Spring Hill Company went from a section of the country some ten or twelve miles from Staunton. I know several men now living who were with that company at the execution of John Brown.
It is reasonably certain that there are now living in Augusta county as many as twenty-five men who were on duty with the guards that "did duty during the capture and hanging of John Brown."
The "Old Richmond Grays" was on duty there, and I think also the old "Richmond Blues" and some of them doubtless still survive.

MRS. SARAH A. BUSHONG

Mrs. Sarah A. Bushong, wife of the late Isaac Bushong, died at her home at Millersville, Maryland, Friday, 1st April. Her maiden name was Sarah A. Mort, her parents having lived in this county, near Lebanon Church. Many years ago she moved with her husband and family from Tom's Brook to Baltimore, later to Frederick County, Virginia., thence to Millersville, Maryland. Two of her sons, Charles of Meadeville, Pennsylvania and William of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania entered the ministry of the Reformed church there , with her following children survive: Mrs. Cecilia Cuffley, Thomas and John H. of Baltimore; Mrs. Sophia Clark, Clinton and Bess of Millersville, Maryland. Her remains were brought up to Harrisville on Saturday afternoon and were interred in St. John's cemetery on Sunday at 10:30 A.M. Rev. A. H. Smith, a college mate of Charles and William, preaching the sermon from Isaiah 64:6. "We all do fade as a leaf." Her age was 71 years 8 months and 30 days. Shenandoah County, Virginia Marriages
