HELENA BUSHONG ZIRKLE

"Mr. W. Harvey Zirkle, of Broadway, Va., received a letter this week
which conveyed the sad intelligence that his mother Mrs. Helena Zirkle had
departed this life at her home near Trimble, Clinton county, Missouri, on last
Saturday, 28th. The deceased was before marriage Miss Helena Bushong, a sister of
Mr. Abram Bushong, who resides four miles west of this town, the only
surviving member of the family. She was the widow of the late Mr. Paul Zirkle, who
owned and lived at what is now known as the Manor's mill property, two miles
west of this town. Her husband died in 1866, and she and her children removed
to Missouri in 1870, where she has ever since resided. She was aged 87 years,
7 months, and 21 days. The following children survive, viz., Samuel O.
Zirkle, Grayson, Mo.; W. Harvey Zirkle, Broadway, Va.; Mr. Perry Zirkle, Yacamo,
Washington; Mr. Jesse Zirkle, Grayson, Mo.; and Mrs. G. H. Calvert (Fanny).,
Trimble, Mo. The following of her children are dead: Mr. Jacob Zirkle who died
in Augusta County, Va., about five years ago; Mary Ann, Lewis, and Clarence
who died at home before and during the civil war; Crele and Mattie (the
latter married Mr. Newman) who died in Missouri.
The deceased was a pious Christian and generally esteemed.
It will be recalled that her son Mr. Harvey Zirkle, accompanied by her
nephew Mr. Abram Zirkle, paid the deceased a visit a year ago, and found her in
a fair state of health and quite cheerful."

".....to Grayson, Mo., where I spent several days with old Virginians, Mrs.
Helena Zirkle who is 83 has changed little since moving west. She is living
with her daughter Fannie who married a Mr. Calvert, and has a fine, well
stocked farm and an interesting family. Their two oldest daughters will likely
visit the Valley this year, and I would advise their Virginia cousins to take
advantage of leap year before they put in an appearance.
Rumor has it that grandma herself has not remained single from necessity
and when I asked her if these reports were true she did not deny the "soft
impeachment." Sam and Jesse Zirkle live in Grayson, and are looking well. Sam
has changed very little in the past 30 years. All of his children are married
and doing well."

In December 1907 in Trimble, Mo., Miss Jessie L. Calvert wrote. "....I
write these lines to the "Shenandoah Valley," a paper which my grandmother Mrs.
Helena Zirkle reads with great interest, though she is almost 87 years of
age."
She continues, "Uncle and cousin started
from your town on Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, and arrived in
Missouri on Friday morning, Nov. 22. They got off the train at Grayson and
walked over to uncle Sam Zirkle's house, which is in sight of the station. They
took dinner there and then uncle Sam and uncle Jesse Zirkle brought them to see
their mother , who makes her home with her daughter
and my mother, Mrs. Fannie Calvert. Here they remained several days."

TIMBERVILLE, Dec. 17---
Their many friends with surprised, learn of the wedding of Miss Nettie
Bowman to Mr. Arthur Bushong at the home of the bride about three miles
north of here, today. Mr. Bushong is a son of Mr. Abram Bushong, a well known
farmer of this section and the bride an adopted daughter of Mr. George
Bowman. The writer not being present a detailed account is impossible. They both
have many friends in this neighborhood who extend their heartfelt
congratulations wishing them a long and happy married life. They will in all
probability reside in this community. Bushong, Arthur of Rockingham County VA married Miss Nettie V. Bowman of Shenandoah County VA on 12/17/1902 at Woodstock VA officiated by Rev. J. E. Shenk, Lutheran Visitor 12/25/1902, page 13.

PAUL H. BUSHONG SR.
TIMBERVILLE------Paul Henry Bushong Sr., 90, of Route 1, Timberville, died
Sunday morning at Moyers Nursing Home.
He was a farmer and a member of the Raders Lutheran Church.
Mr. Bushong was born 21 August 1882 at Timberville and was the son of
the late Abraham and Catherine Ryman Bushong.
In December of 1907, he married the former Emily Fansler, who died
April 11, 1958.
Surviving are two sons, Lawrence F. Bushong of Panama City, Florida and
Paul H. Bushong Jr. of Route 1, Timberville; three grandchildren, and five
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 PM Tuesday at Raders Lutheran Church by
the Rev. Robert E. Mader. Burial will be in the Raders Cemetery.
The body is at the Rhodes Funeral Home in Broadway. Pallbearers will be
J. B. Minnich, Orr Lohr, Robert L. Garber, John Branner, Allen Olinger,
Lester Miller, and Harry Spitzer.

They were married by a Rev. Sage at the Hoytville United Brethren Parsonage.
After completing the eighth grade, Bessie passed the "Boxwell" examination required for
entering Normal School where she earned her teacher's certificate. She taught country schools
several years until her marriage. After marriage, they lived on a farm near North Baltimore. Bessie
became ill with T.B. and died shortly after the birth of their fourth child. She is buried in Maplewood
Cemetery, North Baltimore. Ray was a graduate of North Baltimore High School.
