Were called up at one o’clock. There was heavy pickett firing - marched out, took our positions and remained there until daylight, then marched back to camp, Yankees having left. We all certainly thought to get in a fight before daylight. Yankees thought our camp was only a cavalry camp and thought of surprising it, but found too much here for them. Left camp at about 8 o’clock. Marched in the direction of Culpepper. Came upon enemy about 5 miles of Culpepper C. House, took our positions in line of battle, waited until 1 ½ hours before sundown (cool of evening) attacked them, whipped them out by dark. Cannonading was tolerably heavy. Killed a great many of our men while lying in woods supporting battery, by shell. Our brigade opened the ball - Yankees came marching across a field (we were in edge of woods waiting for them). We fired into them, broke their ranks and caused considerable confusion among them. However, they were brave, & marched off. The Alabama Regiment on our right gave way, and the Yankees came up on the right of our regiment which was compelled to fall back. 3 Companies on the left, ours included, however, remained for some time, when we were also compelled to fall back. The main body of the regiment left us. We reformed with part of the 33rd VA and marched up and played havoc among them. Drove them back across field a distance by ?00 yards - when assistance came. We had no commander, but just went at it on our own hook. We (sorry for it) had ED. KENDRICK killed & ED. W. BUSHONG wounded in thigh, not dangerously, several stunned by the explosion of shells. Fighting was very hard and I cannot estimate our loss nor that of the Yankees, but I know theirs to be heavier than ours. The battle will be known as the "Battle of Springfield Farm". Our Company took some 30 or more prisoners. I enjoyed the fight more than any I have been in yet. It was a prettier fight. The loss of the regiment is some sixty killed & wounded. The Page Company [K] lost more than any other. LEUT. MAUCK killed - LEUT. GRAYSON mortally wounded, LEUT. PITTMAN wounded in leg (since amputated) orderly killed. I fired 15 rounds, as did most of the boys. BRIG. GEN. WINDER of 1st Brigade, Jackson Division was killed early in the action by shell fire. CAPT. PENDLETON & BRIG. GEN. TALISFERRO’S staff was wounded in leg (since amputated). In an engagement near Mauertown, Shenandoah County, Virgina, on January 22 1865 against Union forces commanded by Maj Henry Young and portions of the 5th New York Infantry.

"In the first two encounters the fourteen fought one to five of the enemy. We captured all of the prisoners, captured one-third of the enemy with their horses, killed and shot up one-third, and the remaining third was straggling back to Winchester with their dead and wounded.
We had one horse killed in the encounter at the toll gate and one man mortally wounded in the first encounter, George Bushong, a mere boy who had not reached his seventeeth year, young in years but brave, and he fought with the nerve of a Commanche until he went down. We buried him in the family cemetery with honors of war on the following Wednesday evening and planted the Stars and Bars by his grave."

The Harvester.- Mr. E. M. Bushong is using a self-binding harvester this year. If these improvements continue, the old lime harvest, when twenty or thirty hands. with a barrel of ice water and a large Jug of whiskey with a four o'clock piece, could be seen on every large farm, will be forgotten, and instead of being a big job, one hand will be able to take off a large harvest. To see a man single handed attack a
fifty acre field of grain and with aid of two horses and a harvester cut and bind it. seems remarkable and fully shows the immense labor saving qualities of our machinery.

The 8th Battalion Virginia Reserves, also known as the 1st Battalion Valley Reserves was led by Major William A.J. Miller.
Company A was organized July 19, 1864, and was commanded by Captain D. W. Ridgeway. This company was also known as the Warren Reserves. It was mustered into Confederate service at Front Royal, with Captain E.B. Powell as mustering officer.
Company B was organized May 28, 1864 and was known as the Page County Reserves.
Company C was organized May 4, 1864 and disbanded on June 25, 1864 at Brownsburg in Rockbridge County. This unit was reorganized August 1, partly mounted, and was then known as the Shenandoah Reserves. Company C was led by Captain B.K. Moore.
Company D was organized April 30, 1864, partly mounted, and was led by Captain J.M. Bushong. This company was also known as the Shenandoah Reserves.
Captain William W. Nelson, enlistment officer for Virginia's 10th Congressional District, was located at New Market, Shenandoah County in May 1864. He mustered most of the members of this battalion into service.
Company C was at Staunton on August 1, 1864. The company marched to Camp Lee, in Richmond on August 15, and to Manchester, south of the capital on the 23rd. Company C moved to Belle Isle Prison on September 14, 1864 and to the South Anna Bridge three days later. The company marched back to Manchester on September 23 and to Chaffin's Farm on the James River October 14, 1864.
Some time during the fall of 1864, the justices of Shenandoah County petitioned the War Department and President Davis to allow the reserves from Shenandoah and Page counties to return home. The purpose was to defend their homes from General Sheridan's "malignant incendiarism." Secretary of War Seddon responded November 24, 1864 to General Gilbert S. Meem:
The memorial of the justices of Shenandoah County, submitted by you to the President, has been by him referred to this Department for appropriate reply. Deepest sympathy is felt for the suffering which has been entailed on the people of Shenandoah and the adjoining counties by the savage depredations and malignant incendiarism of our enemies, and there is not wanting, on the part of the Department, an earnest desire to afford to the people of the county all the alleviations which exigencies of the service will allow.
I have had on this subject anxious conference with General Kemper and General Lee, and am compelled reluctantly to the conclusion that the reserves from Shenandoah and Page Counties, now serving in front of Richmond, cannot be relieved and sent home in this emergency. Neither can the call for those between eighteen and forty-five years of age capable of service be altogether dispensed with.
All that I can see practicable at this time is, that such of the reserves remaining at home in these counties, now being collected by Brigadier-General Lee, may be allowed to remain, and that the enrolling officers engaged in assembling those between eighteen and forty-five capable of active duty be instructed to exercise a more liberal discretion than heretofore in furloughing important mechanics and others, the necessity for whose presence is plain for the support of numerous dependents.
It is hoped the contingencies of the campaign may allow, at a latter period, more liberality in furloughing the reserves in front of this city than the exigencies of service have hitherto permitted. Should such an opportunity occur, it will be embraced with promptness, and the reserves from the counties desolated by the enemy will be specially favored.
While these indulgences may appear to the distressed community of those counties but inadequate relief, they will, it is hoped, accept them as an earnest of the sympathy and interest of the Department, and believe that more is not done only because not compatibale with the general defense and safety.
Company B's Lieutenant James William Modesitt received four camp skillets and three skillets at Chaffin's Farm on December 18, 1864. He also requisitioned 16 jackets, 25 pairs of pants, 13 shirts, 42 pairs of drawers, 68 pairs of shoes, 31 blankets, and 21 shirts. During the fourth quarter of the year he received one skillet, seven fly tents, and 24 camp skillets. Family links:

Husband of Eula Woodward, son of Harry Lacy Bushong and Ida H. Perry, grandson of Maj. Edward M. Bushong of the legendary Stonewall Brigade.
Ed Bushong, was a renown researcher and genealogists for the Bushong family lines, including both, Hans Jean Boschung and Johann Nicholas Boschung. He was a tireless researcher, and was also friends with early Bushong researcher, Mary Wickes, though he disagreed with her belief that Bushongs came from the Beauchamp line of France. He was always willing to share his research with others.
Ed was a regular contributor to the Bushong Bulletin, and served as treasurer, printer and publisher.
Note: The notice said Ed was interred in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stafford, Virginia, but there is none in Stafford. His father was in this county at passing, and there are other Bushongs here.
