"The immigrant ancestor for our "Driver" line was Ludwig Treiber who arrived at the port of Philadelphia, October 17, 1749. He had been a passenger on the ship "Fayne" from Rotterdam, Holland, via Cowes, England, with 595 other passengers under Captain William Hyndman.
Ludwig Treiber, - Treiber means "driver" in German, settled in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He married Barbara Sprinkle, daughter of ***MICHAEL SPRINKLE. This MICHAEL "SPRENCKEL" had taken up 500 acres of land along Codorus Creek in York County in 1734, adding 200 acres of adjoining acres in 1747. This land was situated on the west side of the Susquehanna River. Sprinkle was included as a signer of a letter German settlers in the Kreutz Creek Valley had written to the Governor of Maryland. "***MICHAEL SPRENCKEL was granted a license by Samuel Blunston, Esquire, agent for the Honorable the Proprietaries on 6 Apr 1734 to take up 500 acres west of the Susquehanna. Pursuant thereto he took up a tract of land in Manchester Township, York County.[1] In the border conflict between Pennsylvania and Maryland the Germans west of the Susquehanna believed for a time that their land was under the jurisdiction of Lord Baltimore. When they were informed otherwise fifty-four of them signed a letter to the Governor of Maryland on 11 Aug 1736, repudiating his authority and acknowledging their allegiance to the Penns. MICHAEL SPRENCKEL was one of these, and because of this action a Maryland warrant was issued on 21 Oct 1736 for the arrest of him and the others 'for contriving signing and publishing a seditious paper and writing against his Lordship and this government.'
Their names are preserved in Calvert Papers No. 717 in the Maryland Historical Society, in which his name appears 'Michael Aringall.' This peculiar spelling appears because the name was copied by a clerk in Maryland who was unfamiliar with German signatures.[2]
The date of his death is unknown, but it probably occurred in 1748, as an administration bond was filed for his estate at Lancaster in that year (York County had not yet been formed).[3]
His widow, Margaret, married Henry Eberhart of Manchester Township and was living as late as 1765.[4] He left among others nine minor children, of whom two were sick a long time and died in their minority, one child became blind with smallpox, and one was sick a long time but recovered after the father's death.[5] The following issue are known:[6] -- lists.

NOTE: "LISTS OF GERMAN SETTLERS IN SPRINGETTSBURY MANOR REGION - 1736"
PENNSYLVANIA LIST (immigration): NICHOLAS BUCHER (16 Oct 1727)
MARYLAND LIST (bounty): Nicholas Butcharie (10 Pound Sterling bounty) Footnote: P.A. (3), op.cit. for Pennsylvania List; MD, pp 102-103 lists sixty names for whom bounties for arrest and delivery for trial under Maryland authority were offered. Four officials of Lancaster: Samuel Blunston, John Wright, Samuel Smith & Edward Smoote had a 100 Pound Sterling bounty for their arrest. The other Germans listed had either 20 Pound or 10 Pound bounties."
SUMMARY OF SITUATION: Both the governments of PA and MD were disputing the same territory west of the Susquehanna River encompassed by Springettsbury Manor [in York County, PA]. Before PA authorized Samuel Blunston to issue licenses to settlers west of the river in 1736, a number of German families settled in this region with the assurances of the Maryland authorities that they would be issued official grants for their land improvements. These Palatinate Germans paid taxes for what they assumed were Maryland lands, under that colony's protection and authority. However, by early 1736 there was an escalation of hostilities by both colonies within this region.
*** By Aug 1736, their patience at an end, some 60 German settlers west of the Susquehanna River [including Nicholas Bucher and ***MICHAEL SPRENCKEL] recanted allegiance to the Maryland authorities, citing lies and misrepresentation by Maryland sympathsizers and a general state of lawlessness under the state of affairs of that time. An 31 Aug 1736 letter: "To the President of the Council at Philadelphia, or Commander-in-Chief there, Philadelphia" states their complaint. [It would appear that MICHAEL SPRENCKEL signed this letter, since there was a bounty put on him.]"

========================
MICHAEL SPRENCKEL, b. abt. 1700 Europe (emigrant - bef. 1724), d. Jun 1748 (LTA estate) near Codorus Creek, Manchester Twp, York Co, PA (Lancaster Co till 1749). m. Anna Margaretha Mueller / Miller. ---------------Where MICHAEL was born is unknown as are his parents. He was probably of Swiss origins, but whether he was born there, Alsace, Germany, or Holland is unknown. Researcher Dr. Ken McCrea has checked church records in Germany and cannot find proof of these connections. ---------------MICHAEL appeared on tax lists in Conestoga Twp, Lancaster (then Chester) Co. in 1724 and 1726 (Hawbaker, 4:48 - Mikell Springle). April 6, 1734 he was granted a license by Samuel Blunston, agent for the Proprietaries of Pennsylvania for 500 acres of land west of the Susquehanna River situated in what is now West Manchester (PAA, ser.17.114, Survey B5-19). This land was disputed by Maryland and Pennsylvania and the Germans there mistakenly allowed Colonel Cresap to survey this land for Lord Baltimore. When the error was realized they sent a letter of apology to the Pennsylvania Government and a letter to Lord Baltimore of Maryland notifying him of the change on Aug. 11, 1736 and voluntarily placed themselves under Pennsylvania Government. Lord Baltimore issued warrants for arrest of all 60 signers of this letter on Oct. 21, 1736 on grounds of contriving and signing and publishing a seditious paper and writing against his lordship and government (MD Arch., vol.28, p106, Michael Aringall). The following spring MD arrested twenty-two Germans under this warrant, but MICHAEL SPRENCKEL seems to have eluded capture. Those thrown in jail, were later released when the matter was resolved in favor of PA. Oct. 28, 1746 MICHAEL was granted another 200 acres of land on Codorus Creek in Manchester Twp. bordering his first grant (PA Arch., 17.88). This land now lies west of York, south of route 30 and on both sides of Trinity Road in the area of Graybill, an old milk stop on the Pennsylvania railroad. In 1920 a large part of this land was purchased for part of a flood control project called Rock Dam (Dull, Rev. ed., p264). -- corrections, citations, editing, by Glen Swartz. ---------------The untranslated will of MICHAEL SPRINKLE, dated 6 June 1748, probated 10 Jun 1748 in York Co, PA, Will Book A-1, p154 (not verified - the dates are questionable, possibly the will was entered and probated on those dates. York Co, formation 1749). ---------------Following MICHAEL's death George Mayer and Michael Tanner were appointed guardians of his children (Dull, p265). [Michael Tanner arrived 1727, Mennonite, later Brethren]. ---------------1749 Jun 6, Lancaster Co, PA, Orphans Court: George Myer and Michael Tanner appointed guardians over Michael, Maargaret, Christina, Catherine, George, Eve, Henry, Maudeline and Mary Springle orphan children of MICHAEL SPRINGLE. =========================Young, Henry James. Years ago I wrote to Salt Lake City and got a copy of the original submission. There was no reference or source other than that. Mary, b. c. 1748, d. bef. 1765 of small pox. =========================I arrived at the approximate birth years for the children of Michael, first; based on the birth order given in the 1762 deed, then the mention of 9 minors in the 1748 Orphan's Court records, and next assuming about 24 months between births. The year of birth for two of Michael's children, who died young, were the last listed so say b. c. 1748. Further the span of 24 months between births could easily be reduced to around 18 months and would result in adjustment of birth year, by about a year, which could accumulate over the span of a number of births. I then looked for legal actions entered into by these children (taxes, deeds, marriages, etc.) and last a comparison to estimated dates of birth for spouses. I have given no consideration or weight to the fictitious infant baptisms mentioned at "Lauck's Mennonite Church." I have not looked for testimony in court records in which these children might have testified to their age. A last consideration was the span of births, anything past a range of about 20 years should raise closer scrutiny, as should any births after the mother was around age 45. So, rigth now birth year should be within about five years for anyone individual."
