http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/35thcog.html. From what I can determine from his muster records, Pvt. William H. Bushong enlisted in the 35th Arkansas Infantry, on June 18, 1862 and served with them until the the Battle of Bayou Fourche, aka: Battle of Little Rock. Following the battle, when the 35th Arkansas, counted their soldiers to see how many men were still left, William was missing. Usually they were marked as missing, wounded, or killed, but perhaps, someone reported they saw William run off and deserting. Regardless, he was quickly captured by the 1st Chickasaw Cavalry which was close by and September 15th was conscripted/enlisted into their Regiment, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Tahlequah is over 200 miles away, so for him to travel from Bayou Fourche to Tahlequah, in those few days, the 1st Chickasaw must have been traveling quickly. They were note to be 17 miles away before the battle on Sept 7th when the second in command, General John S. Marmaduke, killed General Lucius M. Walker the commander in a duel.
After William was recaptured by the 1st Chickasaw Cavalry, he obviously deserted them again. Because on Oct 10, 1863, he enlisted in the Union Cavalry - the 2nd Arkansas a Union regiment. He fought with Co. L of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, and obviously did well because sometime in 1864 he was promoted to Sgt.
It's interesting that William and James S, both deserted during or after the Battle of Bayou Fourche. It's easy to imagine their desperate run from their regiment, ending up with one being captured and one getting away. Wow! There's also info about James and William Bushong .

Here are some excerpts from the Bushong's friend Henry Shipley's letter that had been transcribed. They give date and place of the Bushongs' whereabouts. They also show James was away a lot and trying everything to get out of the army. So maybe he meant it when he swore the never willingly fought...

Mr. Jas. S. Bushong has got a discharge on account of enlargement of the veins of the leg, called by the Doctor varicose veins. ...PS. James Bushong has not got his discharge signed by the Genl as yet. Don’t say any thing about it to his folks for it may be that he will not get it.
Camp McCulloch Tuesday Sept. 30th & Oct. 1st, 1862:
....and Wm. Bushong are well.
Camp 3 miles west Huntsville, Madison Co. Ark. Sunday evening Oct. 19th 1862
James Bushong arrived with our letter and all the clothing that you so kindly sent us. ...Our clothes all fit us first rate and will be entirely sufficient to make us comfortable this winter. Our clothes were bragged on by all that saw them. ...
By James Bushong we send our summer pants (except the linen one which we will keep to use as drawers) together with our vests and cotton joseys, also both our knapsacks as we were ordered to draw knapsacks furnished by the Government, and the probability is we will have to carry our clothes after this. We are sorry having put Mother to the trouble of mak a new one and then so soon throwing it aside but there are many unforseen events happening in the army. Those that we drew are made out of heavy material having leather straps on them. We both have our knapsacks entirely full.

Then William deserted again, and enlisted 10 Oct 1863 (per Co. records) at Van Buren, Arkansas in the Union Cavalry He fought with Company L of the 2nd Regiment Arkansas Cavalry. On January 26th 1864 when he was counted for muster, he was in Springfield, (illinois) and was still a private, but he was later promoted to Sgt.
It's interesting that William and James S, both deserted during or after the Battle of Bayou Fourche. It's easy to imagine their desperate run from their regiment, ending up with one being captured and one getting away. Wow! Luella BUSHONG
