JOSEPH HARVEY was born Nov 12, 1754 in Monroe Co VA, and died Mar 25, 1828 in Barren Co (now Metcalfe Co) KY. He married LUCY JANE BALLARD Apr 12, 1778 in Orange Co VA, daughter of PHILLIP BALLARD and NANCY JOHNSON. SHENANDOAH VALLEY NEWSPAPER
March, 14 1907
DEATH OF MISS ELIZABETH A. BUSHONG

"Miss Elizabeth A. Bushong, who had been more active and in rather better
health than usual, was suddenly taken sick, Wednesday morning, March 6, with
chills, grip, and pleurisy pains, from which she was greatly relieved at
night. Later on her heart began to fail, and the following Monday morning, March
11, she died at 1:25 o'clock; aged 81 years, 1 month, and 4 days. Several
weeks previous, she came to her home, where her nephew Mr. Jacob E. Bushong and
family also reside, one mile north of New Market, Va. Mrs. J. E. Bushong who
had been with her sick mother Mrs. Rothgeb, near Luray, for a month, and her
daughter Miss Vallie Bushong, who is attending school in Luray, arrived last
Sunday morning, at their home, to help care for her.
Tuesday afternoon the funeral took place from St. Matthew Lutheran church,
with interment in its graveyard. The pall-bearers were Elders John Garber and S. P. Fogle and Messrs. Frank Good, Geo. A. Guard, Jos. W. Myers and C. N. Hoover.
Elder Benjamin Neff, of the German Baptist church, with which the deceased
connected herself two and a half or three years ago, preached the funeral
sermon from Matthew 8, 11: "And I say unto you, that many shall come from the
east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the
kingdom of heaven." He was followed by some remarks, from the same text, by
Rev. Dr. J. A. Snyder.
Miss Bushong was a daughter of the late Jacob Bushong and wife, who was
Miss Sallie Strickler, of Page county. They were married in 1818. He died in
1872, and she in 1889, at the advanced age of 93 years. Their children were
Harrison, born in 1819, who died unmarried; Abram died young; Anderson died Dec.
5, 1904, aged 73, leaving three children; Franklin, (unmarried) who resides
near New Market; Caroline S., who died young; and the deceased.
Miss Bushong came from an old and respected family, and was well known in
this community. Being a kind, useful woman, and possessing many noble traits
of character, which were always manifest, she had many friends."

MR. FRANK BUSHONG DIES
"On Friday morning, April 29, 1927, at 7:30 o'clock, Mr. Frank J. Bushong,
aged farmer of near New Market, died at his home half a mile north of town. For
the past year he had been suffering from heart trouble, which continued to
bring about his decline. Just two days before his death he was able to walk
around the yard adjoining the house.
Mr. Bushong was born in the old "Bushong House," famous in the annals of
history as the center of the conflict which was waged between the Federal and
Confederate troops on May 15, 1864. His parents were the late Jacob and Sallie
Strickler Bushong, originally citizens of Page County. Mr. Bushong was born on
September 25, 1840, and was thus aged 86 yrs., 7 mos., and 4 days. Mr.
Bushong's father was a man of advanced years when his death occurred in 1872.
and his mother had reached the remarkable age of 93 years when she died in
1889. They were married in 1818.
Mr. Bushong was the last of his immediate family. Preceding him in death
were two sisters; Elizabeth, who died in March of 1907-and Caroline S. Bushong.
He also had three brothers, Harrison, Abram, and Anderson. The death of the
latter occurred in December of 1904. He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Mattie F.
Good; a nephew, Mr. J. E. Bushong, and five great grandnieces, and one grand
nephew.
Until his death Mr. Bushong, together with Mr. M. D. Coffman of this town,
were the only survivors of member of the Tenth Legion Artillery, which under
Captain M. M. Sibert took part in the military operations incident upon the
capture of John Brown at Harper's Ferry.
Mr. Bushong went West just before the Civil War and spent a number of years
farming in that region. Over thirty years ago he returned home and has since
lived here. He was of retiring nature, honest and upright and possessed those
qualities which characterize a useful member of the community.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock from St. Matthew's Lutheran Church
of New Market, the Rev. J. T. Glick officiating, assisted by Rev. T. A. Graves,
pastor of St. Matthew's. Internment was made in the cemetery nearby.
The pall bearers were Messrs. J. H. Garber, J. Frank Hupp, J. E. Kingan, A.
S. Ruhl, W. J. Stirewalt, and Joseph H. Zirkle. The flower girls were Misses
Alice and Pearl Good."

1842-023
Instituted 1840
Heirs of Philip Bushong et al VS Administrator of Isaac Sellers et al

To the Honorable Lucas P. Thompson, Judge of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Augusta County, humbly complaining. Shews unto your Honour:
Your Orators Philip, George W. Washington, John, Catherine, Sally, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Daniel Bushong, infants under the age of 21 years by Elizabeth Bushong, their mother and next friend, humbly represent:
That they are the children and Heirs at Law of a certain Philip Bushong, deceased, late of Augusta County, who departed this life in the year ---- intestate, whereby his real estate descended to them.
That the said intestate in his life time time purchased from a certain Isaac Sellers, a small parcel of land, supposed to contain about 20 or 30 acres, part of a tract of about 80 acres which he owned adjoining the plantation of said Bushong. The price agreed upon was $8 per acre, to be paid within such reasonable time as would suit the convenience of the parties; A deed of conveyance to be made with general warranty, on payment of the purchased money and the said Bushong to pay interest on the money while it should be in his hands. The said Sellers was to be at liberty to cut 3 acres of the timber at his discretion at any time within two years from the time of said purchase.
The said contract was verbal, but has been partly executed. The parcel purchased was laid off from the rest of the tract, by a line agreed upon and marked, and possession was delivered to the said Bushong, who in his lifetime cleared and enclosed the greater part of it. The said Sellers, as authorized by the contract, cut and took off the greater part of the timber.
Since the death of the said Bushong, the said Sellers has refused to carry out said contract completely into effect by conveying said land to your Orators, though the purchase money with the interest therein has been tendered to him on the part of your Orators, by their said mother and next friend.
In tender consideration of the premises, and that your Orators are without relief except in a Court of Equity, they pray that the said Isaac Sellers may be made a Defendant to this Bill and compelled to answer the same on oath. that he may be required to convey the said land to your Orators by a good and sufficient deed with a general warranty. That they may be granted in the possession thereof and That such other and further relief may be greater then as is equitable, etc.

Bushong of New Market, Virginia Written 23 April 1850 and posted 24 April
1850 by Samuel with notation made by Harrison that he had received and
answered the letter on Monday, 6 May 1850.

"Isaacs family are all well and hence is doing a splendid business this
year. John eqeals, if not surpasing him packing about 3000 bbls the season
which is no small number for our small country mills. From our relations I have
no really late news. Yet it will be no doubt a pleasure for you to hear that
I received a letter from cousin Sarah Bushong bearing date 20th Nov in which
she stated that they were all well and doing the best they could, Also
that I received letter from Cousin William Bushong from Ohio, bearing a date
18th Jany last in which he stated that they had had much sickness in their
family but were at time enjoying the blessings of good health. He also
stated that James Bushong son of Jonathan Bushong was was residing at their
house, and that a short time prior to his writing to me he had received a
letter from his mother announcing the glad tidings that they were all well to." Mentioned in 1840 Chancery suit over father, Philip's property..

My great-grandmother's maiden name was Bushong. Her homeplace was close to the airport in Roanoke and today I-581 goes through the corn field.

I have in my possession a xerox copy of a letter that belonged to my father. It states: ...You desire to know whether a man by the name of "D. H." Bushong died at our house. A man whose name was said to be Daniel - Bushong died here at our house. - And, it must have been the name of whom you inquire, for it was also said, that, he was from "Botetourt Co. Va." - & I believe, "belonged to the 22nd Va. Regt"...

Mr. Bushong was wounded in the first "New Market fight" on Sunday the 15th of May, 1864. He was brought here, & was at our house until Monday, the 23rd of May, 1864 when he departed this life, about 9 o'c. in the evening. His head was fractured on the left side a little above the ear...

But on tuesday evening the remains of D. H. Bushong were intered in the burying ground at St. Math's (Rev. J. P. Cline's) church. His grave is marked. There were no funeral services at his burial. ....

signed by Jacob Stinewalt.

The letter was written:

New Market, Shen. Co., Va. October 24th 1864.

Apparently a Mr. Shickle had written Mr. Stinewalt on Mrs. Bushong's behalf. The letter is two full pages that are very informative. He began by saying that he was replying to "you and mother Bushong"... on your & her request. Civil War Service Confederate

1878 LETTER TO HELENA BUSHONG ZIRKLE FROM HER SISTER ELIZABETH BUSHONG
AREHART

A letter written to Helena Bushong Zirkle by Elizabeth Bushong Arehart
(Helena's sister) at the time of their mother's death. Their mother was Marie
Henrietta (Mary) Knupp Bushong. Charles Sodeman, Fannie Zirkle's grandson, of
Edgerton, Missouri shared this letter with other family members.

6 January 1878
Timberville, Rockingham Co. Va.
Dear Sister,
I take the present opportunity hastily to drop you a few lines to let you
know that our Mother died this morning (6th) at one oclock she had not been
much worse until yesterday (Saturday) morning but then, Brother Abram not
fearing no danger did not send for any one so she died without any one there but
Abram and his family, her last words were that she asked for water. Bro.
Abram gave it to her and he then walked to the stove and soon, back to the bed
again and when he got to the bed she was gone. She died peacefully and without
a struggle so we should not weep for her as those who have no hope. She will
be buried at Rader's Church tomorrow meet at the house at 9 oclock. Socrates
Henkle will preach the funeral sermon. I will write to you more about it in
my next letter. I will also tell you that sister Mary is tolerable poorly at
this time she seems to get weaker every day. I must close my few lines for
this time by asking you to write soon and not delay. This leaves us all well and
hoping when it reaches you it may find you all enjoying the same blessing.
No more at present but remain your well wishing sister until death
Elizabeth Arehart

Commissioners have been appointed by the County Court of Rockingham to assign the widow her Dower and they assigned as to her Dower, on the tract of 225 acres giving her 75 1/2 acres, including the dwelling house and which assignment of Dower has been duly affirmed by the said Court and recorded, leaving 149 1/4 acres of the 225 acre tract and the thirty acre tract for partition among the Heirs of said John Knupp and your Orators and Oratress as well as the rest of the heirs are exceedingly desirous that partition shall be made among them if the same can be conveniently done. And if partition cannot be made, they desire that the same may be sold, and the proceeds of the same divided among the parties according to their respective interests and Your Orators believe and charge that the said land cannot be divided among the Heirs without seriously impairing the value of the various shares.
In consideration of the premises your Orators pray that the said Jacob Knupp and Mary Bushong of Shenandoah and Nason Bare and Rebecca his wife of Rockingham may be made Defendants to this Bill and required to answer the same on oath, that if partition of the said land cannot be conveniently made that the same may be sold by a Decree of this Court, and the proceeds divided among the parties according to their just rights and that you Orators may have such others and further relief as is equitable and adopted to their case and they will ever pray and etc.
