James Deter
M, #6901, b. 1 March 1818, d. 1 February 1913
Biography
James Deter was born on 1 March 1818 in Marcersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He and
Catharine Anna Bushong were married on 18 November 1852 in Hancock, Pleasant Township, Hancock, Ohio. He died on 1 February 1913, at age 94, in Hancock County, Ohio. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, McComb, Hancock County, Ohio.
JAMES DETER, farmer, P. O. Van Buren, was born in Franklin County, Penn., March 1, 1818, son of Jacob and Sarah (Anderson) Deter, natives of Pennsylvania, who moved from there to Richland County, Ohio, when our subject was quite young. Their family consisted of nine children, six now living, our subject being the eldest of the family. James Deter acquired his education in the common schools of his day, and came to this county in 1836, settling in Portage Township. In order to obtain a start in the world he worked by the day and month, and part of this time he worked on the canal on the Maumoo River. In 1850 Mr. Deter was united in marriage with Catharine Bushong, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Bohart) Bushong, natives of Stark County, Ohio, who were among the early settlers of this county. Mr. Bushong was commissioner of this county in a very early day; he departed this life in 1884. Our subject and wife are the parents of four children: Jacob, married to Catharine Wagoner (they have three children: Laura M., Harry and Clinton W.); Samuel, a photographer of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Irvin and Emily J. Mr. Deter took part in the militia of the early times. He has taken an interest in educational affairs in his township. He has been successful in life and, by close application to business, has acquired 210 acres of fine land on which he and family reside.

AGED MAN KILLED BY WABASH TRAIN
"
Hiram Bushong Wandered Away from Home and Met Death Near Montpelier Depot"
"Hiram Bushong, aged about 74, and well known in Montpelier, where he has
resided a number of years, was struck by a Wabash passenger train at
Montpelier Wednesday, and instantly killed. The accident occurred about a
half mile west of the station. For the past couple of years, Mr. Bushong had been ailing, both in mind and body and at times it has been necessary to place him in care of an
attendant. Sometime Wednesday forenoon he went out for a walk, as usual, and it is
supposed that he wandered onto the railroad track and west until about half
way between the bayou and main river bridges, where the fatal accident
occurred. Mr. Bushong was an old resident of Williams county and formerly resided in
Jefferson township four miles northeast of Montpelier." Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959 for Feller

MRS. MERRIMAN
"Mrs. Clifford Merriman passed away at her home on North Lebanon street,
Wednesday noon. She had been a sufferer from impaired health many years and
besides this affliction, cataracts developed on both eyes, and being
physically unable to undergo surgical treatment, she became virtually blind
a few years ago. Since that time she has required constant care which has been
given by a devoted husband. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Friday afternoon at two
o'clock, Rev. Samuel Huecker of the Presbyterian church officiating. The
body was laid in the mausoleum. The adopted son, Clyde Merriman, who is a bridge worker for the New York Central railroad, with headquarters at Alliance, has been here the past week
on account of his mother's failing health. The deceased was a sister of Mrs. M. M. Boothman of this city."
CARD OF THANKS
"C. L. Merriman and son, Clyde, wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to all
friends and neighbors who sympathized with and assisted them in any way
during the sickness and death of their wife and mother, Mrs. Emma Merriman." A son....

OLD MAN BRUTALLY ASSAULTED
WILLIAM BUSHONG BEATEN SEVERLY BY HIGHWAY ROBBERS---THEY EVEN TOOK HIS
SHOES AWAY FROM HIM---SECURED BUT A SMALL SUM OF MONEY
William Bushong , an old man, making his home
with a Mr. Brown in the Rolling Mills District, is confined to his bed as a
result of a brutal attack made on him Saturday night, when he was pounded
into ensenability by two men while walking near his home. His clothes were
rifled and when the men found only a small sum of money on his person, they
stole his shoes. The police and the sheriff's forces are working on the
case. George W Bushong, "United States 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War"
