EARLY ALBION HOME TO BE VICTIM OF WRECKER'S TOOLS

ALBION --- One of the earliest homes in the immediate vicinity and one
which may have been a stop-over for run-away slaves, will fall victim to the
wrecker's crowbar within the next several weeks.
Robert and Shirley Bushong, present owners, have decided that
the 125-year old house is beyond practical rebuilding and are planning to
build a new home on the site, just east of the city limits on Jackson Road.
BOUGHT IN 1924
Thus down will come the house that has been home to Mr. Bushong all of
his life as well as to his nine brothers and sisters. It was purchased by
his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Bushong, in 1924.
And it was home to several other families in its long history.
The house, according to stories, was a haven for run-away slaves
traveling the "under-ground" en route from the south into Canada. Apparently
there are no written records substantiating the tale but there is a closet-sort
of room built over the stairwell, accessible only along a narrow ledge,
that gives credibility to the theory.
AGE NOT KNOWN
It was in 1834 that a David Taylor received the land on which the house
stands in a federal government grant originally covering 160 acres which
extended southward to the east Kalamazoo River branch and westward to what
is now Clark Street, the city limits.
It is presumed that he built the house shortly thereafter, although he
may well have built a temporary cabin because 1834 was only a year after
Albion's original settler, Tenny Peabody, established his family in a cabin
near the river forks. It was a year before Jesse Crowell came to the
settlement to become an ardent promoter of the community and establish the Albion
Land Co.
It was no accident, of course, that a settlement became a reality at
the confluence of the two river branches with its water-power resources so
necessary in that era for community growth. In fact the deeds for the plots
of land David Taylor sold in the immediate years after his coming here,
those plots running to the river, recognize that the river will be dammed,
indicative that the saw mills and grist mills, which were prevalent here in the
19th century, were quickly built, after the first settlers' arrival.
BEAMS HOLD BARK
And it is logical to assume that the lumber Mr. Taylor used in
construction of the old house may well have come from the village sawmill. Wide
pine boards were used in the single flooring. The supporting beams, visible in
the basement, were rough cut and in some places still hold their bark.
Albion's Historical Society, through Mrs. Blanche Coggan of East
Lansing, an authority on underground railway activity, tried to verify the story
of the Bushong house as a stop-over but no documentation has been brought
to light. The house has been offered to the society for museum use, if they
would move it, but because of its low ceilings and small room size, as well
as the difficulty of moving the house, the society has not seen fit to
accept it.
The Bushongs, particularly, are looking forward to the actual wrecking
of the old home with some curiosity, wondering what, if anything, may be
found in the partitions.
"I'm even curious to see how the house was fastened to the foundations;
to see what has made it stand so strong through all these years," the

Jack (Ralph) Ardel Bushong and Carolyn June Powers.
My dad's (Jack/Ralph) dad was Ralph Bushong and Leona.
My grandfather's mom and dad was Pansy Geneva and John Bushong. Do you have any further info. on the Bushong family?
