CARL RAYMOND SCHOENAUER

LEIPSIC – Carl Raymond Schoenauer, 94, of Leipsic died 3:35 p.m. Tuesday,
September 22, 2009 at his residence.
He was born September 19, 1915 in Columbus Grove to the late Verlin and
Alice (Bushong) Schoenauer. On August 15, 1934 he married Zelma Myers and she
died June 19, 2004. He is survived by a son: Richard (Carolyn) Schoenauer
of Leipsic; a daughter: Sharon Peck of Leipsic; 6 grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister: Helen Vogel of
Dixon, IL. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law: Jim Peck; and 2 brothers:
Charles Bushong and Bob Schoenauer.
Mr. Schoenauer was the owner/operator of Schoenauer’s Confectionary in
Leipsic and was retired from the N & W Railroad. He was a member of First
Christian Church, Leipsic, Leipsic Commercial Club and Leipsic Grange.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2009 at
Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Leipsic with Rev. Tim Eding officiating. Burial
will follow in Sugar Ridge cemetery, Leipsic. Visitation will be from 4 to 8
p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church or Putnam County
Hospice.

SAM BUSHONG, RETIRED OWNER OF CANDY FIRM
Sam T. Bushong, 85, of 8212 Maple, retired owner of Bushong Candy
Company died Tuesday.
The company sold hand-dipped chocolates wholesale and retail in nine
states.
Bushong came to Wichita in 1920 and founded the company at 624 W.
Douglas, where it remained until he retired in 1946.
Before moving to Wichita, Bushong owned a candy shop in Kansas City for
nine years.
He immigrated from Greece when he was 14, and worked for Santa Fe
Railway in Topeka until 1911, when he moved to Kansas City to open the shop.
In 1938, Bushong was elected district governor of the American Hellenic
Educational and Progressive Association, a Greek organization.
During World War II, he was named director for the Kansas division of
the national Greek War Relief Association, which was started to aid the
invaded Greek nation.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, KCCH, with the Wichita Consistory, and a
member of the Rotary Club, Midian Shrine and Order of Eastern Star.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Wichita Consistory Auditorium.
Survivors include his widow, Faye.
Memorials have been established with Westwood Presbyterian Church and
the American Heart Association. Old Mission Mortuary has charge.

Samuel Theodore Bushong. One of the distinctive industries of Wichita is the Bushong Candy Company, a manufacturing enterprise that in half a dozen years since it was started has grown beyond a position as a local unit, and its products are already know far and wide over several states. It is a business that has grown and prospered on merit, the greatest force in advertising and sale of product being the peculiar excellence and quality of the candy.

The credit for the development of this business belongs to two people, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel T. Bushong. Mr. and Mrs. Bushong, the latter a Kansas girl, were married in 1913, and both had a more than casual experience in the candy business before they started their modest establishment in Wichita, Samuel Theodore Bushong was born in Greece, March 5, 1892, son of Theodore and Cathleen Bushong , and was left an orphan at an early age. When 13 years old he came to the United States, living for a time in Wisconsin, and at Topeka, Kansas, gained experience working in a candy store, After two years he went to Pittsburgh, Pa., and during a working experience of several years obtained a thorough knowledge of candy manufacture.

On March 5, 1913, he married Miss Faye Mooney. Mrs. Bushong was born at Parker, Kansas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Mooney. After their marriage they went to California, and in 1915 to eastern Texas, where Mr. Bushong managed a candy store and for a time was in business for himself.

In Oct, 1920 they started the Bushong Candy Company in a small shop at 1018 West Douglas Ave. in Wichita. Their plan and idea was to specialize in chocolate candies, of the highest possible grade, and the Bushong hand rolled chocolates were soon established in popular flavor. Mrs. Bushong since the first has given her assiduous care and attention to every process of manufacture, insuring that unimpaired quality which is the first requisite of any product of this kind. Mr. Bushong at the beginning represented the entire force of salesman, and the growth of the business has been such that the Bushong chocolates of 65 distinct flavors are now sold by 16 jobbing houses and 10 traveling salesmen over half a dozen states. At the beginning of 1925 the company took possession of its new plant at 622-624 West Douglas Street, a model factory designed and built for the essential necessities of candy making, with every provision not only for the technical processes of the manufacture but also for the convenience and welfare of those who work in the plant.

Mr. and Mrs. Bushong are popular members of the Wichita social and civic organizations. Mr. Bushong belongs to the Exchange Club. His favorite hobbies are baseball and fishing.

married to a woman named Helen and by 1920 census is found living in Rhode
Island with his wife and two young sons. Meanwhile Soterios Bozinakis aka
Samuel Theodore "Bushong" was only in Wisconsin a short time before moving
on to Kansas.

BLUFFTON -- Richard C. Harris 78 of Bluffton and formerly of Columbus Grove died at 6:40 a.m. April 20, 2004 at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. He was born January 28, 1926 in Lima to Russell C. and Ruth (Bushong) Harris. On February 1, 1947 he married Joanna M. Finn and she survives.
Mr. Harris was associated with Harris Funeral Home, Columbus Grove for many years. He also worked at Phillips GTE, Ottawa and retired from Columbus Grove Schools where he was a custodian and bus driver. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Columbus Grove and VFW Post 4510, Arlington. He was a former member of the Lions, American Legion, Masonic Lodge 364 and Order of Eastern Star 527 all of Columbus Grove, and the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Lima. Mr. Harris was an avid supporter of Columbus Grove sports and was on the chain crew at Columbus Grove football games for many years. He was a WWII Navy veteran. Survivors also include two sons; Gary (Helen) Harris of Columbus Grove, Greg (Lynn) Harris of Findlay, a daughter, Gwen (David) Daquette of Savannah, GA, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a sister, Eloise King of Van Wert. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Conrad. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Chiles and Sons-Laman Funeral Home, Bluffton with Rev. Gary Ginter and chaplain William Herr officiating. Burial will be in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove with military graveside rites. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam County Home Health and Hospice or the Columbus Grove High School Athletic Department.

In the matter of the widow's pension of Margaret Zentz, widow of Harrison W. Zentz. Personally appeared, John R. Zentz, whose Post Office address is Alliance, Stark County, Ohio. Affiant states that he is 69 years of age and has resided in Stark County, and Carroll County all of his life; that he and the deceased soldier Harrizon W. Zentz were brothers and that said soldier was born at Waynesburg, Stark County,Ohio about the year 1839.
That the soldier resided in Waynesburg, Stark County, Ohio and in Carroll County, Ohio, about eight miles from Waynesburg, from date of his brith until about the year 1874 excepting the three years he served in the Army.
That about the year 1874 he left Carroll County and located in Columbia County and resided in the city of Salem in that said County until about the year 1886 when he left Salem and located at Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio where he continued to reside until his death at Convoy on Sept 8, 1915.
That the said soldier was first married to Angeline Bushong in Carroll County, Ohio about the year 1867 and that his wife Angeline died on or about the month of June 1879;
that the soldier remained a widower until about the year 1889 when he was married to Margaret Marshall at Convoy, Ohio and they lived together as husband and wife from the date of their marriage to the date of the soldiers death and were not divorced.

George Bushong, aged 65, a veteran of the civil war, died at 1:05 o'clock this morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. David Brown, 1628 Richardson street, after a long illness from tuberculosis. Mr. Bushong came here five years ago from Findlay, Ohio and had since made his home with his children. Surviving him are the following sons and daughters: Frank Bushong and mrs.
