I think I remember a line or two of a poem I studied in my eighth grade literature book. It read something like this …” The saddest words of tongue or pen are these — it might have been.”
I think this was a sentiment long held by a lady who lived most of her life near Bristol Tennessee. She was long regarded as the belle of old Stoney Point plantation. She was born around 1835 in or near Blountville, Tenn., a daughter of Philip and Mary Elizabeth Dryden Bushong. Both of her parents are connected to well-known, early pioneer settlers of this section. Her mother was a Laughlin and his mother was an Akard (often called Accord in those days by some early pioneers). Descendants say that Mr. Bushong held a county job of some kind in Blountville. Unfortunately, so many records were burned during the Civil War that I have not been able to prove this claim. It is known that he was living there before his marriage.
During those years a good tailor, who was plying his trade in Greeneville, Tenn., made trips throughout this area taking orders and measurements for various articles of clothing. In this manner, Philip Bushong met that tailor, a man named Andrew Johnson. The two became fast friends, so much so that Johnson made Bushong’s wedding vest for free and attended the wedding. After these newlyweds established a home in Blountville, Johnson often spent a night there as he made his rounds through the area. This close friendship continued for life.
The only child born to this couple was a daughter who they named Elizabeth Jane. In a few years, the Bushong’s moved to a plantation known as Stoney Point in the vicinity of Paperville, Tenn. It was located along what is now King College Road, being divided by Sinking Creek. On this place was a large, two-story log house. Philip Bushong covered it over with regular wood siding and added a fancy portico on the front. He outlined the windows with shutters. The whole was painted white except the shutters painted either a dark green or black. My informant of long ago was not sure. It was said to be one of the finest homes in the Paperville area.
It was there that Elizabeth Jane grew up to become one of the best know Southern belles in the area. Andrew Johnson made this home a stopping point as well when traveling through the area.
In 1834, a son was born to the Johnson’s named Robert. This son grew to manhood during the same years Elizabeth was becoming the beautiful belle of Stoney Point. In time, he began traveling with his father. In that manner, he met the Bushong’s charming daughter. The friendship finally grew into a strong courtship. It seemed inevitable this would happen. When I liquidated the large Hart estate in 1990 (Mrs. Hart was a daughter of Elizabeth Jane Carmack) a very fancy party dress was found that Miss Bushong had worn while attending a party with Robert Johnson at the Susong home in Bristol Virginia.
Finally, the two decided to marry but her mother and father were against it and forbade her to do so. The father explained to his daughter that although very fond of the Johnson’s, alcoholism ran in the family and he greatly feared it would bring sorrow to his greatly beloved daughter and to the family that was to come. The daughter later told that after this, she and Robert agreed to elope. But as the time neared, she just couldn’t bring herself to go against the will of her beloved parents. Thus the opportunity passed. Young Robert Johnson was broken hearted and some say it was during that period that he began to indulge in strong drink. Soon he became an alcoholic and this would soon ruin his life.
Years later, the Belle of Stoney Point was courted by Gideon Burkhart, a promising lawyer who was the first to practice in Bristol. They soon began plans to marry. About that time, her mother became a widow. Elizabeth Jane did not want to leave her mother alone. She would still marry Mr. Burkhart if he would agree to move in with them and make theirs his home. He would not agree to these terms for some reason. Years later he stated he would live to regret that decision.
Then came the trying years of the war. During that war, Robert Johnson became a colonel in the 1st Tennessee Calvary. Later, he was promoted to brigadier general. When his father became president of the United States, he served him as private secretary. Jane was aware of his accomplishments. In a letter to a friend located somewhere here at Pleasant Hill, she made this statement, “Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a daughter-in-law of Andrew Johnson and to be living in the White House. But then that will never be. For it was a few years ago when I decided not to marry Robert. I yet sometimes wonder if I made the wrong decision in that matter. But I cannot go back, the opportunity is lost forever.” When news came that Robert Johnson had taken his life, she wept and was depressed for weeks afterwards.
Finally Elizabeth Jane married Jacob Susong Carmack, a neighbor who lived in the vicinity of present High Point. In 1884, they built the fine brick home that yet stands at 2061 King College Road and is now occupied by a great-granddaughter.
The Belle of Stoney Point died in 1929 and sleeps in the old Village Cemetery in Paperville, Tenn. Yes, it might have been, but it wasn’t.

Last remaining Civil War horse died in Bristol
There is a photo in the newspaper of Jacob Susong Carmack with the
following information:
A horse used in the Civil War survived until 1896. The death of this horse
made front page news both in Bristol and throughout the South. He was last
owned by Jacob Susong Carmack, who is pictured here in his Civil War
uniform.
At about 5 p.m. 2 August 1896, a horse died on Stoney Point Plantation
near Bristol. Tennessee.
Seldom is the death of a horse mentioned in a local newspaper. But not
only did this one receive a front page write up in the BRISTOL NEWS, but other
area newspapers took up the story and newspapers all over the South
followed through with notices of the event.
Why such a to-go over a horse? For the full story, we must go back a bit.
In the latter part of the Civil War (some say mid-1864) a Bristol man, one
Marion Brown, enlisted in the Army of the Confederate States of America.
Until that time, he had worked in the warehouse of the James and Seneker
store that stood near the depot in downtown Bristol. he and his family lived
in a small house on old Fourth street that was rented from Joseph R.
Anderson. When it was learned that Mr. Brown intended to enlist, Joseph Anderson
and W. W. James, his former employer, supplied him with a fine young horse
named King Richard.
When Brown rode away to war, he left behind his wife, a son about 11 years
old and two younger daughters. Soon after the end of war, Brown came
riding home. He was so wounded and sick he could hardly stay mounted on the
horse. Within a week he was dead. The family was left destitute. Mr. Anderson
and Mr. James paid the funeral expenses. He was buried near the northeast
corner of the Confederate section of East Hill Cemetery.
A few days later, his son, young Houston Brown, took King Richard one
morning and went out along what is now King College Road to find work as he had
to help support the struggling family.
He had no luck until about mid-morning when he stopped for a drink at a
roadside spring that yet flows in front of the home of Ann Foley at 2061 King
College Road. This was the seat of the old Stoney Point Plantation.
Mrs. Bushong, a widow and
recently deprived of her slave services, was desperate for help with the
cultivation of her large spread of land. Not only that year but several years
following, young Houston Brown worked for this kind lady.
His two sisters married when they were in their very early teens. His
mother died in 1874.
After his mother's death, Houston moved out to Stoney Point Plantation and
lived in the old slave cabin that had been used by John, a former Bushong
slave. The family called it "Old John's Cabin."
In later years, it was taken down and moved to northern Alabama and
re-erected there. By this time, the only Bushong daughter had married
Jacob Susong Carmack, who became the manager of the plantation. Mr.
Carmack would have gladly kept young Houston on indefinitely had a little twist
of fate dictated otherwise.
A family living near Stoney Point sold out and moved to east Texas. They
hired young Houston Brown to drive livestock to their new location. He left
King Richard behind with the intention of being back to Stoney Point by
Christmas that year.
His employer had a late teenage daughter who helped in the livestock
drive. Along the road, Houston fell in love with this girl. Soon after his
arrival in east Texas, he wrote Mr. Carmack that he planned to be married and
remained in Texas.
The letter he wrote the Carmacks is here among old papers here at Pleasant
Hill. Houston also offered to sell his fine horse to Mr. Carmack. The
offer was accepted. For several years, King Richard was Mr. Carmack's favorite
riding horse.
Mr. Albert C. Smith, who had become the editior of the BRISTOL NEWS began
the countdown as old Civil War horses died one by one. Finally, it became
evident that King Richard was the last surviving horse in this area and
perhaps in other areas of the South.
He was then about 36 years old, somewhat beyond the normal life span of
the average horse. In his final years, he was kept in a little pasture
spreading around what is now the home of the Rev. Bill Goforth at 2004 King
College Road in Bristol, Tennessee and that is where he died.
He was buried in what is now the vegetable garden at this place. Thus, the
last Civil War horse in Bristol and the surrounding area, had died.
