MARYSVILLE, OHIO CRASH KILLED KARL BUSHONG
STATE PATROLMAN WHO SERVED IN THIS DISTRICT VICTIM OF ACCIDENT.

Karl Bushong, 42, state highway patrolman who was stationed at the Marion substation from June 25, HMfl. until January I this year and who patrolled highways in Union- County and often visited Marysville, was killed in an automobile accident two miles east of Geneva, O., Thursday afternoon. Bushong was a passenger in an automobile In the crush. Bushong died of a punctured lung five hours after the accident. He was the only person seriously hurt in the crash. He was the fifth state Highway patrolman to die in service since the patrol was established in November of 1933, records at the state headquarters in Columbus show. Patrol records show Bushong attendecl the University of Illinois for two and one-half years and that he served two and one-half years in the United States marines air squad. 7 June 1932. An Ohio National Guard Douglas O-38 flown by 2nd Lt. Karl E.
Bushong dropped 25 tear gas bombs on a group of protestors near a mine and
sprayed an adjacent hillside with machine gun fire to scare them away at the
request of the Guernsey County sheriff.The protestors, mostly angry women
who had been stoning working miners during a coal strike, dispersed.15

30 June 1932. 2nd Lt. Karl E. Bushong dropped tear gas bombs from his Ohio
National Guard Douglas 0-38 on several boatloads of West Virginia coal miners
crossing the Ohio River at Powhatan to work as strike breakers in coal mines in
the Buckeye state. He supported boatloads of striking Ohio coal miners who
had intercepted the West Virginia miners in mid river. While the naval battle
between 15 boatloads of miners armed with clubs and oars was progressing,
Ohio National Guard soldiers fired machine gun tracer rounds at the far bank
of the river to persuade would-be strike breakers to remain in West Virginia.16

World War One veteran, pilot with the 112th Observation Squadron, Ohio National Guard, one of the very first Ohio Highway Patrolmen (1933) and the fifth OHP to be killed line of duty.
He was a bomber pilot in the Marine Corps in France during WWl, transferring to the single seat fighters just before the war's ending.
He had over 1500 hours of flight time at his death. He was also an instructor at a commercial hanger on Cleveland Airport in the late 1920's.
At his graveside service the 112th flew in formation, dropping flowers in remembrance of this favored comrade.

William Evy's grandfather, Peter Eavy/Evey/Ewig/etc. was a member of
Rader's Church in Timberville from at least 1789 to at least 1796, when he had
children christened there under the surname Ewig. Which makes me wonder if
he was a member of the Evick family. He later was in southern Shenandoah
Co., where he died, probably in 1816. His wife's name was Anna. One of
their children were sponsored by Peter Schmidt and his wife Anna Maria. His
dau. Mary Magdalena was confirmed at a Lutheran Church in southern
Shenandoah co. previous to her marriage in 1796 in Rockingham Co., VA to Peter
Beaver, son of Mathias Beaver and Mary Shaffer/Sheffer/Shaver.
Another child, the youngest known, John, b. 1798, m. Christina Emswiller
in 1823 in Shenandoah Co.

Bushong, Merton, D. Spruce Pine, N. Carolina
Formerly of Bay City Age 84 years, died January 15, 2006 in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. A resident of Bay City, Michigan for more than 50 years, he demonstrated his commitment to leaving the world a better place through his involvement in community service groups, including the YMCA and the Board of Realtors' Paint 'N' Pride project. He was an active member of the Fremont Ave. UniteMethodist Church where he sang in the choir and served on the finance committee. He recently resided at Country Meadows in Bay City and will be missed by many dear friends. A veteran of World War II, he is preceded in death by his wife, June Bushong; his parents: Reverend Henry and Lottie Bushong; and his brother, Walter. Mert is survived by brothers: Frank and John; sons: Mike and Steve; daughter, Pam; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
His zest for life will be remembered by many. A Memorial Service will be held on February 4, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fremont Ave. United Methodist Church in Bay City. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fremont Ave.
United Methodist or Habitat for Humanity.

Fiske Lodge, one of ,the two cooperative
houses on the Albion
College campus. His formal initiation
into the group will take place
in the near future. Bushong is one

Walter A. Bushong, 25, son of
Rev. and Mrs. Henry Bushong, of
Case City, was very seriously injured
in an automobile accident
about 4:00 a. m. Monday, on M-13,
five miles south of Saginaw. He
suffered a punctured fracture of
the skull and was taken to St.
Mary's Hospital in Saginaw for
treatment. Twelve stitches were
necessary to close the wound in his
forehead. He was found about five o'clock
in the morning and officers believe
that he had lain by the roadside
for an hour before being discovered.
Indications, officers say, are
that Mr. Bushong's automobile was
sideswiped by a truck, ,the driver
of which was a hit-and-run motorist.
The Bushong car, after leaving"
the highway, ran into an embankment
and was turned upside down. Mr. Bushong was returning to
Case City from Albion, where he
had been visiting, when ,the accident
occurred.Plans were made to bring Mr.
Bushong to the home of his parents
in Case City yesterday. His 4 condition
is still very serious.

Rev H G Bushong spoke on the topic "Putting Ideals to Work"
The school auditorium held a large audience Sunday evening when The Rev. H G. Bushong. Pastor of the Methodist Church, gave the Baccalaureate address at a Union service of local Churches.
REV. H G BUSHONG SPOKE ON THE TOPIC; PUTTING IDEALS TO WORK' TAKING FOR HIS TEXT A PORTION OF HEBREW 8:5. "SEE, SAITH he, THAT THOU MAKE ALL THINGS ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN ON THE MOUNT."
Rev Mr. Bushong made the assumption that there are plenty of people who have high ideals and who have a vision of the kind of world we ought to have: but not very many who do the things thus seen. That is the reason we have such a tragedy in a day of great learning and civilization. He said we must have a plan for life and that plan must be envisioned in the highest moments we have in our experience. The plan should be followed with a determination which comes by getting rid of fear. Several illustrations were given which showed how people had red themselves of inferiority complexes and fears.
Concluding his address, Mar Bushong said that we must work at peace with the same intensity that men wage war, The real reason we do not see this done is because men have not the thought that they are doing the ordinary things of life for their country and for their own people. They must have the same mind as Christ who:"Came unto His own."
