Find A Grave Memorial# 101486869. Reitired Marion County Farmer Dies After Illness of Five Weeks

John H, Mitchell, 77, retired farmer and a native of Scott township died yesterday at 9p.m., at his home oh thee Mt. Gilead road, two and a half miles east of Marion.

He had been seriously ill from dropsy for the last five weeks and had been in ill health for several years.

Mr. Mitchell was born Oct 29, 1854, in Scott township to Joseph and Jane Hill, both natives of the towship . He was married on Nov.. 12, 1874, to Ella Dawson, who preceded him in death two years ago.

He leaves a son and daughter, Joseph M. Mitchell of south State street and Mrs. F. M. Fairchild of theedison pike, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks of Kilpatrick, Mrs. Margaret Coons of Duluth, Minn., Mrs Ida Johson of Marion and a brother, B. F. Mitchell of Kilpatrick.

The funeral will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the home, with Rev. O. Dodd of Central Christian church officiating. Burial will be made in Marion cemetery. Friends may view the body at the home any time untill the funeral. John H Mitchel

NEW ORLEANS — People browsing Magazine Street`s Garden District shops may be surprised to find that a real hair-raising adventure awaits them amid the antique stores and galleries.

A modest-looking shop called Whodunit? features mystery novels, spy thrillers and adventure books as well as hair cutting, washing and styling.

``The name suits us perfectly,`` said Hermes Bushong, who runs the bookstore/hair salon with his father, Charles. ``People often ask, `Who did your hair?` and most of our books are of the whodunit variety.``

How Whodunit? was conceived a year ago is a tale nearly as unlikely as those fictional ones on sale here.

Charles and Hermes met only three years ago when the son, who had been raised by his mother and stepfather, used information from an aunt to locate his biological father.

Hermes found Charles at a time when he had retired from his post with the Cleveland Institute of Art and his wife had died. The two became fast friends and decided to go into business together.

Charles had always wanted to run a bookstore and Hermes was a New York hairdresser. They agreed it would be nice to locate in a warm climate and selected New Orleans.

Although their bookstore/hair salon business was really a chance combination of the two men`s personal interests, it is proving a successful mix, Hermes said.

``When people come in to have their hair done, I always offer them a book to read,`` he said. ``And they like to browse through the books while waiting their turn for a shampoo and cut.``

Most of Hermes` customers are local, but sometimes tourists who stop in to look at books decide to get their hair done as well. At $8 for a shampoo and blow-dry, the hair business is a bargain and booming.

Book sales have been slower to grow, said Charles, and hardcovers don`t sell well at all, perhaps because of the sluggish economy. But more and more people who come for haircuts are leaving with bags of books.

When Hurricane Andrew menaced New Orleans last summer, the book business was brisk.

``People expected to lose electricity, so they stocked up on food, candles and some good books to tide them over,`` said Hermes. ``New Orleans is a great town for readers.``

In an era when huge superstores dominate bookselling by luring customers with discounts on best sellers, the Bushongs say that offering people personalized service is a smart marketing ploy. They get to know the reading habits of regular customers and buy new books with individual tastes in mind. ``We`re going to be unique in filling our niche,`` said Hermes. ``We provide an experience you just can`t get from a superstore. We`ll order any book for a customer and will take time to provide personal service.``



The synergy between hair-cutting and mystery-reading has been successful enough to cause the Bushongs to plan the addition of another service to their business.

They`re putting a New York-style deli and coffee shop in rooms adjacent to the bookstore/hair salon.

``We want people to come in and spend a leisurely time with us,`` said Hermes. ``We want them to feel at home here.``.

In the front there was a note to Charles from a friend named Aaron?. The note basically said farewell, have safe trip, this book is to remember me by...Aaron was a good friend of Charles. (it was dated 1801, meaning Charles took a special trip to Amsterdam from America because his wife was in PA before this time having her children) Of course this was during a time when people of that area were fleeing persecution due to their religious beliefs.

Barndollar information was sent to me by Merrill A. Bean of the Montgomery Co. Historical Society, from research done by a deceased colleague of his. Daniel and his wife Anna Margaretha arrived in Philadelphia before 1734, as he is listed on the 1734 tax roll as Daniel Birgendolor. He was naturalized Sept. 1740, his name appearing on a list of Quaker persons naturalized at that time. His occupation is listed as a skinner. Their families lived in the area of Philadelphia and Germantown. Marriages and baptisms are shown at St. Michael's & Zion Lutheran, Philadelphia, and St. Michael's Lutheran, Germantown. Pa. Archives 2, Vol 2, p. 298

Daniel BERNDOLLAR of Phila county, scrupled to take oath (was affirmed) naturalized between 25th and 28th Sept. 1740. Daniel Berndeller is a witness to the will of John Balte/Baldy, another ancestor on my mother's lineage, in 1758 in Roxboro.
The following notes are from the research of Carolyn Carroll: In a list of German inhabitants of Philadelphia County, who owned land prior to 1734 , under Roxburro Twp, is Daniel Bergenthaler, 80 acres. (Rupp, "30,000 Names of Immigrants") Deed dated March 1, 1775, Samuel Guldin of Roxborough, Philadelphia Co, Pa transferred a tract of 275 acres to Daniel Barndolar of Roxberry, yeoman, for 300 pounds, beginning at the mouth of run by Wissahickon Creek, etc, "with houses and outhouses, gardens, orchards, wood, underwoods, meadows, marshes, swamps, etc. Recorded March 15, 1744/45.

Deed dated March 15, 1766 by Daniel and Margaret, part of the above tract of 275 acres, namely 136 acres of land was transferred to Michael Berndolar, "skinner", the said Michael being one of the sons of the said Daniel.

And it is further my will that the two acres of land being my property in Roxborough shall be divided into two parts for the Highway in the middle through the land so that the one half part which joins my son John Barendaller's orchard he shall have the other half part bounded by land of my Daughters husband Christopher Lentz he shall have and the said two Acres of land I give to them as a present and
it is my will that my Daughters Husband David Snyder shall have the cloathes Press as a Present, and it is my will that my son Peter Barendollar shall for his share of inheritance have one shilling and no more.
The rest of my Children shall after my Dear Wife Ann margaretha decease takes in equal parts, one as much as the other, and I do appoint my two Sons in Laws Henry Bockele and Christopher Lentz, Executors.
