Doris,
What is your source of information about the Mitchells?

The book "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia - Extracted
from the Original Court Records of Augusta County 1745-1800" by Lyman
Chalkely and published in 1966 has this will Vol. III, page 444:

14th February 1771 John Mitchell's will, farmer, To wife, Elizabeth,
plantation acquired from his mother by verbal will;. to third son John; to
fourth son, James, executor, to youngest daughter, Elizabeth; to eldest son,
Thomas, to eldest daughter, Elenor Wilson; to second son, Robert; to second
daughter, Mary Right. Teste: John Tate, Andrew Moore, Thomas Wilson. Proved
20th August, 1771, by Moore and Wilson.

This John Mitchell married Elizabeth Wilson ca 1730 Lancaster Co., PA. He
lived in Beverley Manor, Augusta Co., VA. His son Thomas married (1)
Elizabeth McClenachan Moor and (2) Elizabeth Wales. Son Robert married
Elizabeth Glass and moved to Woodford Co., KY. Son John married an Elizabeth
_______ and also moved to KY. Daughter Eleanor married Mathew Wilson. Son
James married Elizabeth Beard. Daughter Mary married Samuel Wright. No info
on Elizabeth other than she was baptised 6 Mar. 1747.

This John Mitchell was the son of Thomas Mitchell and Eleanor ______. Thomas
died in Lancaster Co., PA in Oct. 1734 (Will proved 14 Nov. 1734 Lancaster
Co., PA.

The book "Kentucky Genealogy and Biography" Vol. 5, p. 209 edited by Thomas
Westerfield has a biography of Thomas Mitchell b. 16 June 1768 Rockbridge
Co., VA. Thomas was the son of John Mitchell and Margaret Porter. John
Mitchell was the son of John Mitchell and Mary Boyd. The book states "John
Mitchell and Mary Boyd immigrated from Ireland when their two children were
very young. They appeared in Lancaster Co., PA in 1721. They lived there
until 1737 when they moved over to the Virginia frontier to the area known as
Augusta Co., VA. The area in Virginia later became Rockbridge County. In
1744 John, Jr. with his father's money selected a tract of land south of the
Borden Grant for his father. The grant was for 400 acres being as stated in
the patent, on a Branch of the James River called Broad Spring Branch." (The
book states two children which would have been John and William.)

The 1719 tax list for Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co., PA lists only one Mitchell
- James Mitchell. The 1722 tax list for Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co., PA
lists James Mitchell and John Mitchell. (The will of James Mitchell in 1746
lists sons James, Alexander, William, and Thomas - No John)

The John Mitchell in the 1722 tax list was very likely John and Mary Boyd.
Also arriving to Donegal Twp. was Rev. Adam Boyd from New England. John and
Mary appears to have first arrived in Connecticut before moving on over to
Donegal Twp.
Rev. Adam Boyd is very likely Mary Boyd's father. Rev. Adam Boyd was one of
the first pastors at the Donegal Presbyterian Church.

Susannah b. c 1744 Bedford Co. Va OR Campbell Co., VA; d. 20 Aug 1813 Mercer Co, KY. So John Mitchell who died in 1793 in Mercer Co., KY could very well be connected to this family. (please check my list posted here on 9 Sept 2001 Susannah is the d/o Robert Mitchell/Mary Enos. Robert is the s/o John Mitchell/Mary Boyd of Lancaster Co. PA.) [I do NOT agree. MAM]
I also found from "The History of Lancaster Co., PA; East Donegal Township" a James Mitchell here in 1718; Thomas & John Mitchell in 1720; William & Alexander Mitchell in 1730. We don't know if James is a brother to Thomas & John, but there is a brother, William listed on Thomas's will. Alexander, is most likely another brother, having arrived at the same time as William. There is also another John there, listed in other things in "The History", but he was apparently not related, or at least not the brother John. I do believe though, that Thomas brother John, remained in Lancaster Co.Pa. It was Thomas son John that moved to Augusta Co. VA.

Somewhere I posted this already, but I can't seem to find it either, so will post it again here. Since I wrote this up, though, I have figured out there is a slight confusion in the 2 John Mitchells, the brother of Thomas and the son of Thomas. I have it here that the brother of Thomas, John and his wife, Mary Boyd Mitchell, eventually went to Augusta Co. VA too. However, I have proof that it was the son of Thomas, John that went to Augusta Co. VA. I believe his brother stayed in Lancaster Co. PA. There are known will's for both of these John's, but I haven't sent for them yet. Even though, I now believe the brother John to have stayed in Lancaster Co. PA, I believe he is still the ancestor of my 2nd line listed here. I hope these names, dates, etc will be of some use to you. Please let me know. Nita [email protected]

I will list here the names of my Mitchell's, two separate lines from two brothers...first Thomas Mitchell, then John Mitchell.

5. John J. b. 1 Jan 1719 No. Ireland; d. Nov 1789 VA
6. James b. c 1721 No. Ireland
7. Elizabeth b. c 1723 No. Ireland.

Robert Mitchell/Mary Enos [MAM - I do NOT believe that many of these children belong to Robert and Mary Enos. See Robert's page.]

2. Frances b. c 1743 prob Delaware
3. Enos b. c 1744 Pequa, Lancaster Co. PA; d. 27 Feb 1841 Bedford Co. VA
*4. Susannah b. c 1744 Bedford Co. Va OR Campbell Co., VA; d. 20 Aug 1813 Mercer Co, KY m. Josiah Campbell abt 1762 VA.(my 4th ggrandparents)(their daughter Elizabeth Campbell m. Allen Jones; their son Martin Mitchell Jones m. Elizabeth Wallace; their daughter Nancy Jane Jones m. William Henry Walden, son of Lewis Walden/Sarah Mitchell from my first line of Mitchell's. Nancy Jane Jones/William Henry Walden are my ggrandparents)
5. Samuel b c 1749 Pequea, Lancaster Co., PA; d. 15 Mar 1835
6. Daniel b. c 1750 Pequea, Lancaster Co., Pa; d. 25 Sep 1775 Bedford Co, VA
7. Robert Harvey b. c 1752 Pequea, Lancaster Co., PA; d 1818 Mercer Co., KY
8. Stephen b. c 1754 Pequea, Lancaster, Pa
9. Sarah "Sally" b. c 1757 Pequea, Lancaster Co., PA
10. Mary b. c 1758 Pequea, Lancaster Co., PA
11. Margaret b. c 1762 Pequea, Lancaster, PA
12. Andrew b. c 1764 of Bedford Co., VA
13. Martha Ann b. 1767 Pequea, Lancaster, Pa; d. 1 Jun 1875 Bedford Co. VA; buried Stewartsville, Bedford Co., VA
14. James b. 29 Jan 1749 Pequea, Lancaster Co., PA; d. 27 Feb 1841 Prince Edward Co., VA (I believe he was a minister)
15. John b. 3 Nov 1760 Bedford Co., VA

There seems to be some discrepancy between the two John's listed, the son of Thomas and the brother of Thomas. What I printed above concerning the brother of John, I found from the family search site. However, the military records of John, the son of Thomas says that this is the John that was given a Beverly land grant in Augusta Co. VA, for his military service. The submitter for this material on John, the brother of Thomas, has the same death date, etc., as the son of Thomas has. So I believe they have confused these two John's. I believe John, the brother of Thomas, stayed in Lancaster Co., PA, taking care of both his own property and the property left in his care by Eleanor, the widow of Thomas. I intend to send for a copy of his will and also a copy of the will of John, the son of Thomas in Augusta Co. VA.

It is possible, that they have the children of both of these John's confused as well, and listing the same children as children of both. A copy of the wills on one or both of these John's could clear up a lot of this confusion.

At any rate, both John and Thomas Mitchell are my 6th great grandparents.
I hope this is of help to someone.

Some time after Rachel Berry moved to KY her sister, Naomi Shipley Mitchell, followed her. Naomi was the wife of Robert Mitchell. She was massacred by the Indians when the family was attacked while en route to KY. Her daughter, Sarah Shipley
Mitchell, named for her mother's people, was captured by the Indians during the same attack and a few years later upon having been returned to her relatives became the constant associate of Nancy Hanks, her first cousin. It was for this Sarah
Shipley Mitchell that Nancy Hanks most likely named her first child, Sarah Lincoln. It is interesting also that Sarah Mitchell who married John Thompson names one of her daughters, Nancy. A nephew of Sarah Shipley Mitchell was named Tom Shipley
Mitchell.

Death: BEF 1820 in Twin Twp, Ross, Ohio, USA

Note:
!MARRIAGE:
To Elizabeth RIN1653
!CENSUS:
Elizabeth BREEDLOVE is listed in both 1820 and 1830 censuses as the
head of a household with other BREEDLOVE names as follows:
1820 - BREEDLOVE, DAVID ROSS 297 TWIN TWP
BREEDLOVE, ELIZABETH ROSS 301 TWIN TWP
1830 - BREEDLOVE, BAILES ROSS 262 TWIN TWP

BREEDLOVE, ELIJAH ROSS 250 CONCORD
BREEDLOVE, ELIZABETH ROSS 262 TWIN TWP
BREEDLOVE, ROBERT ROSS 262 TWIN TWP
BREEDLOVE, WILLIAM ROSS 255 TWIN TWP
!RESIDENCES:
Thomas Breedlove, father of Elizah RIN22, David RIN158, Bayles RIN158
and William RIN1124 was reportedly a Scotsman from Maryland. However,
compiler was unable to find any BREEDLOVEs in early Maryland censuses.
It seems that they possibly came from Virginia where in Orange
County among others, the BREEDLOVE name appeared. The History of
Champaign County, Ohio, page 545 states that his son, Elijah, was born in
Virginia. This conflict means that much more research needs to be done on
this line.

218: Gives the complete 1840 voters list which included Bayles, Thomas,
William, and Elijah Breedlove, Peter and Paul Igou.

A notation on a Queen Insurance Co notepad, a company represented in
Urbana by Effie Evans STAFFORD RIN85, great granddaughter of
Thomas Breedlove stated: "Thomas Breedlove came
from Maryland. Elizah and David were sons of Thomas - Scotch". In the
Igou folder (6-46), it will be noted that Elizah Breedlove (5-22)
married Mary E. Igou - Bayles Breedlove married her half-sister, Pa-
tience Igou.

I came across a letter from you regarding genealogy on the

I have info on family members, mostly from Ohio if you want it. I hope
this filled in some blanks for you. There has always been "hear
say" that Thomas was our great great granddad, but I have found no
proof of this at all. There are absolutely no records that tell
who Elizabeth was married to. Do you have proof of your Thomas?
If so, that is the info I've been looking for for twenty years!
(But if you got it from Olive Smith's book, it was hear say, info
given by my father and not documented info.) She has many things
wrong in her book. I wrote her with info of Robert's other wives
and she refused it saying her line was correct and complete!
Thank you for writing. I hope that you can make this out. Write
again.
Sincerely
Candy BELL (BREEDLOVE)
REMARKS(1):
See notes on each of the four above sons' "Individual Notes" for LDS
Church Batch Numbers, Serial Sheet Numbers, and Input Source Numbers.
REMARKS(2):
The Effie STAFFORD RIN85 mentioned in SOURCE(1) above was the daughter
of Mary Ann BREEDLOVE RIN11 - granddaughter of Elijah BREEDLOVE RIN22 -
and great granddaughter of Thomas BREEDLOVE RIN157. After the death of
Elizah BREEDLOVE, her grandmother, Mary E. IGOU RIN23 made her home
with the STAFFORD family until her death in 1891. This indicates that
Effie, born 1868 lived in the same household with her grandmother for
23 years so in all probability the notation on her notepad about the
BREEDLOVEs was from her personal knowledge.
NOTES:
On August 31, 1990, the compiler extracted all Ohio BREEDLOVE names
from the Asheville NC LDS Library micro-fiche data and has sent to Salt
Lake City for copies of those files. There were 4 Thomas BREEDLOVEs,
but all reference dates are in the 1800s. None was found in the Mary-
land micro-fiche. A photocopy of the above notes will be found in the
compiler's STAFFORD file folder. The original is in the possession (in
1990) of Isabel Ruth MCROBERTS (Mrs. James Carlton DOCKERAY) RIN348 of
Maitland, Florida.
RESEARCH:
The following is inserted here to inform future researchers as to searches which have been made concerning from where the Breedlove family migrated to Ross County, Ohio:
Maryland Historical Society, 201 West Monument St., Baltimore Md 21201-4674 - 410/685-3750 - FAX 410/685-2105 - Sept 4, 1999.
I have negative results on Maryland as birth plaxce of Thomas Breedlove 1770-1820 (died Ross, Ohio.
I checked, found no printed book, nothing of mention of the surname in Genealogy file, Norris Harris Church file, File Case A, Dielman File (marriages and deaths in newspapers) Maryland Historical Society Magazine Index, Wilkins file, marriages of Maryland by Robert Barnes)
I checked census indexes for Maryland, 1776, 1780, 1790, 1800, 1810.
I checked on the Pennsylvania shelf census 1780, 1790, Pa Colonial and Revolutionary families of Pa, marriages thee before 1810 (and before 1790) Pa German marriages, Pa Vital Records. Pa famalies.
In Filbys Passenger lists to get idea of a state or city, I checked all of his books 1982-1998.
In Mr. Filbys book volume 187601990 I saw Mary H Breedlove in Galveston Tex 1839. You mihgt write to Galveston County Genealogical Society, Trivas Sheffield, 1701 9th Avenue N, Texas City TX 77590nd ask if they have any genealogy on the surname.
I am enclosing a list of those in the Baltimore city phone book. You may try writing to them and some one may have researched on this name. Send a self addressed stamp envelope for a reply.
I am sorry I can't come up with any better information.
Sincerely
(signed) Miss Margaret Neal, volunteer genealogist.
EMAIL:
Lawrence, happened to be browsing through the Russell Co., VA USGenWeb
site today and found a Thomas Breedlove listed on the 1798 and 1799 Tax
Lists and then two deeds, one to Thomas in 1799 and another from Thomas
Breedlove and wife Elizabeth in 1800. This is the only Thomas who had a
wife Elizabeth that I know of that early so he has to be your Thomas. My
bet is that he is the son of Thomas Breedlove Jr who died in 1808 in
Orange Co., VA as a son by that name is mentioned in his will. Hope this
helps. Tom King

This information is some of the best documented which we havereceived
on the Francis Beatey descendancy and should prove very helpful. As
mentioned in previous communications, we are developing Lineage020 as
the DOCUMENTED information on Francis. Lineage 020A and this
020B lineage information will be utilized in developing 020.

This lineage is listed here beginning with Thomas Mitchell, father of
Martha Mitchell, wife of Francis Beatey, Lineage 020. TheMitchell
information is included since it is the most thorough we havereceived
to date on Martha's ancestry.

The following information also includes the Thomas Ross Beaty

Pending further investigation 241 may be merged with 020B.

Descendants of Thomas Mitchell

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 MITCHELL was born Abt. 1661 in Probably Ireland1,and died
1734 in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania2. He married ELEANOR3.

Notes for THOMAS MITCHELL:
**********************************************************
The following information appears on the reverse side of theThomas
Mitchell Family Sheet provided by Evelyn W. Miller.

Thelma Piper: "I can't help believe that Capt. Mitchell justmight be
skipping a generation, but maybe not. But coming to America in1682,
would mean that Thomas was probably born at least in 1661, andthat
would mean he was 48 when John was born in 1709. Guess I willhave to
go look in the Pennsylvania Archives for a marriage around 1707in
Lancaster, but then it said they didn't come to Penn. until1720. I
wonder where our John was born and where Thomas was married."

Thelma: "According to Capt. Harry Mitchell, I quote, 'Thefollowing are
the real facts, corroberated by wills. Two Mitchell brothers,Thomas
and John, had immigrated from Ireland to America in 1682 andinto what
is now Lancaster Co., PA in 1720. Thomas died in LancasterCounty in
1734. After Thomas Mitchell's death, his widow, Eleanor, and her
children moved to Augusta Co., VA.'"

Joe Burch: "Eleanor - 1737 sold 500 A Lancaster Co., PA (4 Feb1737)
went to Orange Co., VA, (Augusta). About 1738, 200 A BeverleyManor
deeded to Eleanor by Wm Beverley 13 Aug 1747. see Aull-Meteer"

Thelma: "I understand the Mitchells were first from Ulster in N.
Ireland, but went later to Craigend, Sterlingshire, Scotland.(Craigend
was a mere manor near the present town of Milingavie nearStrathblane.)"

Capt. Mitchell: "There were evidently some Mitchells in thatsmall place
because the Encyclopedia Britannica records that the celebrated
Australian explorer, Sir Thomas Livingston Mitchell was born in
Craigend, Sterlingshire, Scotland in 1792. Legend says that our
Mitchells immigrated to Ulster County, Ireland in 1637 and thenin 1682,
immigrated to America and in 1720 to Chester County, PA. Theysettled
in E. Donegal and Nottingham Townships."

Thomas Mitchell's will was written 4 May 1734; Probated 14 Nov1734,
Lancaster Co., PA. Therefore, it is safe to assume that he diedin
1734.

Augusta County (then Orange County), Virginia, in about 1738.[Chalkley,

On 13 Aug 1747, 200 acres in Beverley Manor were deeded toEleanor by

From "The Irvins, Doaks, Logans, and McCampbells of Virginia & Kentucky". Morris, Margaret Logan, 1916. On page 79:

Three Doak brothers, David, Samuel and Robert, and one sister, married to John Finley, came to America from the north of Ireland and landed in Pennsylvania. They remained in Chester county for some time, and then moved to Augusta county, Virginia. The brothers fought in the French & Indian wars.

Samuel Doakmarried Jane Mitchell either on the voyage to America or soon after they landed in Pennsylvania. A deed was made to him by William Beverly, owner of Beverly Manor, 23 Sep 1741.

His will dated 5 November 1771 is found in Chalkey, Volume 3, page 123; it went to probate in Augusta county, May 1772. He leaves to his wife Jane (Mitchell) to have the disposal of all the household furniture to her three daughters, Elinor, Mary, Isbel. To oldest son David the plantation he lives on, to son Samuel the plantation at the head waters of Rockfish, to son John the plantation he lives on, to son Robert the tract that his father formerly lived on in Rockfish. The executors are his wife Jane, his son David, his son in law William Brown, brother in law John Finley and John Tate to advise.

Note: the naming of John Finley as a brother-in-law has led some to incorrectly identify Samuel's wife Jane as a Finley, but the personal testimony of Mrs Virginia Doak Burwell to Margaret Logan Morris was that Samuel's wife was named "Jane Mitchaell".

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M59339-1 , System Origin: Alabama-ODM , GS Film number: 1290271. Here's what I have on my Mitchells. My earliest "for certain" ancestor is John B. L. Mitchell, b. 11/4/1826, Perry Co., AL, m. Lucinda Autrey (daughter of Absolam Autrey of Perry Co., AL), 11/3/1847, d. 3/17/1879. John B. L. Mitchell and his father-in-law were the first settlers of Lincoln Parrish, LA having moved there from Perry Co. AL in 1848. John B. L. Mitchell is my g-grandfather.

Until recently I believed that J.B.L. Mitchell's father was John Mitchell of Perry Co. This belief was based on the fact that J.B.L. Mitchell was listed as an heir in John Mitchell's will while other children of John Mitchell were not. Recently, I have been directed to the i850 Census data, Dublin Beat, Perry County AL. I believe that there are at least three households recorded on the Census that are related. The households are #52, #58, and #32 (Ephraim Mitchell, Jas Mitchell, and John Mitchell, respectively, all shown as born in KY). I do not know where in KY they were born, nor do I know who their parents or siblings were.

Household #52
Ephraim Mitchell 49 KY
Elizabeth 24 AL
Rebecca 22
James G 20
Ephraim H 18

Household #58
Jas Mitchell KY
Susan 55 GA
Mary W 27 TN
John B L
Elizabeth P 17 AL
Rebecca A 15
Wm P 13

Household #32
John Mitchell 53 KY
Nancy 53 SC
Jinsey

In the 1850 Census John B. L. Mitchell is listed in Household #58, the only occupant without an age listed. According to my other information, he would have been 24 years old at the time, married (where's his wife Lucinda Autrey Mitchell---presumably back at their or her father's home in Dubach, LA)abd a property owner in LA. I am just guessing that John B. L. Mitchell is visiting in AL and staying in the household of James Mitchell (his probable uncle under this theory. If john B. L. Mitchell is the son of James Mitchell, why did he share as an heir in the estate of John Mitchell when other of his children did not? And the estate settlement was in 1867, nine years after J.B.L. Mitchell had relocated to Lincoln Parrish LA? So, who were John B. L. Mitchells's parents, James or John? Or Ephraim?

What was the geographic location of the Dublin Beat on the 1850 Census? Where exactly did these Mitchell Households own property?

Any information, insight, suggestions on tracking these questions further will be most sincerely appreciated!!!

Phillip Mitchell.

Biography

John *ANCI Mitchell, Pa 1722, was born before 1700 in Ireland ? He and Mary Boyd were married. He died.
