History of Kentucky, Volume 5
By William Elsey Connelley, Ellis Merton Coulter

George W. Bushong. M. D. Of the men devoted to the science of healing at Tompkinsville, few bring to bear upon their calling greater gifts of scholarship and resource than Dr. George W. Bushong, president of the Monroe County Medical Society. When he entered upon the practice of his chosen profession it was with a mature mind, trained by some years of work as an educator, and with a full realization of the possibilities and responsibilities which confronted him. During the quarter of a century that he has practiced at Tompkinsville, he has added to a thorough professional equipment a kindly and sympathetic manner, a genuine liking for his calling and a ready adaptation to its multitudinous and exacting demands.

Doctor Bushong was born at Tompkinsville, July 1, 1872, a son of Jacob and Mary (Headrick) Bushong. His grandfather, George Bushong, was born in 1807, in Virginia, and as a young man came to Kentucky and located in Monroe County, founding the old homestead upon which Bushong postoffice now stands. There he was engaged in agricultural pursuits and blacksmithing until his death, which occurred in 1892, at which time his community lost a man who was held in high esteem and one who had proven himself a worthy and useful citizen. He first married a Miss Parker, the grandmother of Doctor Bushong, who died when her son, Jacob, was a small child. He was next married to a widow, Mrs. Maxey, and after her death took his third wife, also a widow, Mrs. Thompson.

George W. Bushong acquired his early education in the rural schools of Monroe County, and when only seventeen years of age began to teach in the country districts. For five years he was thus engaged, in the meantime studying medicine during his leisure hours, and July 1, 1897, was graduated from the Hospital College of Medicine, Louisville, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He did not cease being a student at the time he left college, for he has always applied himself assiduously to his medical library, and in 19o3 took a post-graduate course at the University of Louisville, in general medicine and surgery. Each year since, he has visited some institution, and in 1915 took a post-graduate course at the Cook County Hospital, Chicago, specializing in surgery. In 1921 he spent two months at post-graduate work in Illinois Post-Graduate Medical School of Chicago, taking special courses in surgical diagnosis and operative surgery, and also ear, nose and throat.

In 1897 Doctor Bushong began practice at Tompkinsville, where his skill in diagnosis and his successful treatment of complicated cases of long standing soon created a gratifying demand for his services and laid the foundation of what has proved to be a career of exceptional breadth and usefulness. His offices are in the Baptist Hospital, on Main Street, Public Square. Doctor Bushong has been health officer of Monroe County for twenty years, and is a member of the Monroe County Medical Society, of which he is president, the Kentucky State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Aside from his practice, he has been prominent in republican politics, and from 1898 to 1918 was chairman of the republican County Executive Committee. For thirteen years, during the administrations of President McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft, he served capably as postmaster of Tompkinsville. He was a member of the Monroe County draft board during the World war, and did much to assist the various drives inaugurated to assist America's fighting forces during the great overseas struggle. His fraternal connections are numerous, including membership in Tompkinsville Lodge No. 753, F. and A. M.; Glasgow Chapter No. 45, R. A. M.; Glasgow Commandery No. 36, K. T.; Kosair Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., of Louisville; Tompkinsville Lodge No. 4oo, I. O. O. F.; and Tompkinsville Camp No. 13476, M. W. A. In a number of these orders he has held office, and in all he is popular with his fellowmembers. Doctor Bushong's career has been attended by financial success, due to his industry and to the rewards that his skill has brought him, and at this time he is the owner of two farms m Monroe County, aggregating 3oo acres of valuable land; and a modern residence on Jackson Street which is one of Tompkinsville's desirable homes. He is also a stockholder and member of the board of directors of the Deposit Bank of Monroe County.

In February, 1898, at Tompkinsville, Doctor Bushong was united in marriage with Miss Pearl Eagle, a daughter of Henry and Lucy (Maxey) Eagle, both of whom are now deceased, Mr. Eagle having been a leading merchant and trader of the county seat. Mrs. Bushong, who is a graduate of Bethel College, Hopkinsville, where she took a special course in music, is a talented musician and skilled pianiste, as well as a woman of other accomplishments and graces. Six children have been born to Doctor and Mrs. Bushong: Lucille, a graduate of the Louisville Conservatory of Music, who inherits her mother's talent and is teacher of music, having charge now of the musical department of Lindsay Wilson Training School, Columbia, Kentucky; George Eagle, a member of the class of 1922, University of Louisville, where he is pursuing a medical course; Joe Ed, a member of the class of 1921, Tompkinsville High School, and a teacher in the graded school; Will Randall, born in 19o6, Irvin, born in 1911, and Corinne, born in 1913, all attending the graded school. _UID9A191166ECA7F04F9F11064DD193CAB6E3F2.

[Call me skeptical, but I’m not entirely sure that the seventh bullet was still “self-defense.”]

Henry’s wife, Cecile Richardson, worked in Dr. Bushong’s office. Cecile was seeking a divorce and Dr. Bushong was apparently encouraging her to do so.

Dr. Bushong had previously served as Monroe County Sheriff. So he was familiar with the law enforcement procedures and legal process. Immediately after shooting Henry, Dr. Bushong went to the home of the County Attorney to inform him of what had just transpired and asked for the Sheriff to be notified so that he could be arrested.

The first news article about the shooting (below) calls it a murder. However, on April 11, 1950 Dr. Bushong was acquitted after successfully claiming self-defense. (The follow up news article follows.)

The Kentucky Sheriffs’ Association (KSA) claims—I hope erroneously—that Dr. George Eagle Bushong served as President of the KSA in 1954.

image

I hope this is an error because Dr. Bushong (July 12, 1900 – July 26, 1952) was dead in 1954. Perhaps the citizens of Monroe County propped up his dead carcass and squeezed a few more years of service out of him, but I consider this an unlikely possibility.

source: http://youwantbloodyouvegotit.tumblr.com/post/100871411863/the-night-the-lights-went-out-in-t-ville. The Courier-Journal. Tompkinsville, Ky., April 7, 1950

Attorneys for Dr. George E. Bushong, who went on trial here today for murder, set out to prove he acted in self-defense. The 49-year-old physician and former sheriff of Monroe County is charged with slaying Henry Richardson, 35, farmer and livestock dealer. Before the first witness was called at 1:15 p.m., Circuit Jude James C. Carter ordered a night ession of Monroe Circuit Court tonight in a move to complete the case by tomorrow afternoon. However, court adjourned at 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. tomorrow on motion of the Commonwealth, and it appeared unlikely the trial could be completed before Monday. 47 Witnesses Called Forty-seven witnesses have been summoned, 24 by the defense and 23 by the Common wealth. A jury selected from a special venire of 50 men called from the northern section of Metcalfe County is hearing the case. The panel was enlisted shortly before the noon recess. A special Monroe petit jury list of 60 was exhausted this morning. Richardson, whose divorced wife, Mrs. Cecil Richardson, is receptionist in Dr. Bushong's office, was shot six times last November 16, while in Palmore's Restaurant across from the Courthouse. He died there. One of the six bullets pierced his heart. The defense and the Commonwealth stated there was no evidence of any relationship between Dr. Bushong and Mrs. Richardson other than employer and employee. Lawyers Admit Surprise Attorneys assisting the Commonwealth admitted early in the testimony this afternoon, "We have been taken by surprise" when the State's third witness testified under cross-examination that 30 minutes before the shooting he felt in Richardson's right-hand pocket 'what he believed was a gun. The witness was Edgar M. Chappell, Tompkinsville, a former Kentucky State policeman. Firing questions at Chappell with the quickness of shots from an automatic rifle, Rodes K. Meyers, Bowling Green, chief of defense counsel, brought from the former State policeman a statement that may prove the basis of the defense claim of self; defense. Chappell said fie was with Richardson before the latter had entered the restaurant and still was present when Dr. Bushong walked into the place and fired the shots from a .38-caliber revolver. Meyefs put this question to Chappell: "Didn't Richardson tell you while you were riding with him 'There's going to be some hell around here tonight.' I'm going to kill a dark-skinned doctor?" Doesn't Recall Remark "I don't remember Richardson saying that," Chappell replied. Then Meyers asked Chappell: "Didn't Richardson tap his pocket 30 minutes before the shooting, and have you feel with your hand where he had patted and didn't you feel a gun?" ' Chappel answered, "I felt something like a weapon." George Eagle Bushong

by George Bushong (View posts) Posted: 7 May 2001 11:36PM GMT. Joe was married and divorced to Florence...

This is an appeal from a judgment of the Monroe circuit court. Appellee, Joe Ed Bushong, filed a petition in equity purporting to set out grounds for divorce from the appellant, Florence A. Bushong. He alleged that he and appellant were married in the state of California on November 13, 1932, and that in June, 1934, "the defendant, without fault or like fault willfully deserted this plaintiff." No doubt appellee intended to allege that it was he who was without fault, but, as the petition reads, it would appear that it was the defendant who was free from blame. A warning order was issued, and a warning order attorney was appointed. He reported that he had been unable to locate the defendant and that he knew of no affirmative defense he could make. Thereafter proof was heard, and the chancellor granted the divorce. About four months after the divorce was granted appellant learned of it, apparently for the first time, and filed a motion to vacate the judgment on the ground that the affidavit for the warning order was defective and void and the petition was insufficient. The chancellor refused to set aside the judgment, and this appeal followed. _UID348ECAF18D8C654BB5EC6CB812E011C3D119. Florence A. Bushong. He alleged that he and appellant were married in the state of California on November 13, 1932, and that in June, 1934, "the defendant, without fault or like fault willfully deserted this plaintiff."

At the August, 1936, term of the Monroe Circuit Court the appellee was granted a divorce from the appellant on the ground of one year's abandonment, which, it was alleged, had occurred in the state of California in June, 1934. The petition was defective, and among the allegations on which a warning order was made was the statement that when last heard from the appellant was residing in Long Beach, California. These allegations are set forth in full in our opinion in the case of Bushong v. Bushong, 272 Ky. 474, 114 S.W.2d 735, 736, which was an appeal prosecuted by the present appellant after the Circuit Court had overruled her motion to vacate the judgment of divorce on the ground that it was void because of the deficiencies in the affidavit and the petition. In concluding our opinion in that case we said.
