_UIDF490C73DE51FE5408C0487E2D54BE9A95CAE. John Andrew ("Andrew") Bushong had person sources.
1 Biography
John Andrew Bushong was born November 4, 1792, and died June 26, 1883. His first wife was Feraby White Hutchens (married before 1820) and his second wife was Jane D. Pace, widow of William G. Hutchens (married December 25, 1862) He was sometimes called John, and even John A. (like his cousin) but most often went by Andrew, probably to avoid confusion with his first cousin, John A. who was about 18 months younger and lived in the area.
Research Notes - Who was Andrew's Father?
Family tradition has it that Andrew's father, George was married in Montgomery County, Virginia, and It should be noted that Andrew's stated place of birth has varied between Virginia and Kentucky. But Kentucky was separated from Virginia in 1792, which is the year of his birth. Only Kentucky's statehood occurred on June 1st and Andrew's birth was after that and according to his tombstone was November 4.
So who was John Andrew Bushong's father? Excepting his tombstone, there are no Bible, birth, or death records. Drawn from thorough research and evidence the only conclusion can be George Bushong (now called George Washington Bushong Sr.). What proves that?
There are multiple geographical associations in census records (below), not to mention that, George's household in the 1810 Census has an unnamed son in Andrew's correct 16-18-year-old age group. Then there is the matching DNA from three of Andrew's male descendants. But that only proves Andrew is in the Bushong family.
Those are all acceptable sources though not the strongest to prove a father. So added to these we can use the process of elimination. This is only possible from extensive charting of the entire Bushong family in America. Charting the Bushong family in FindaGrave (2012), the 1930, and 1940 census, was no small undertaking and took months, resulting in proof, that virtually all American Bushongs are descended from one man and one family.
The charting shows, that in the period, living in the then Kentucky County of Virginia there were only so many adult Bushong men.
First, the family patriarch, Andrew (John Andrew's grandfather), died before 1790, leaving five living sons who are all accounted for. Going through them, the oldest, John, with his youngest brother, Valentine, and mother, Catherine, moved to Ross County, Ohio in the spring of 1797. Brother, Jacob followed in 1817. They never returned and all of John's and Jacob's children are accounted for.
That leaves Henry and George, the two remaining brothers living in Kentucky. Henry can be ruled out because his children are known thanks to The Henry Bushong family Bible transcription of the Mrs. John Owen's of Monroe Co, Kentucky, Bible. Henry actually had one son named John A. and incidentally, it's not much of a stretch to imagine his middle name was also Andrew, but speculation aside, he always went by John A.
But utilizing the process of elimination leaves only George as Andrew's father and we can say: "It could be no one else." With the extensive research and charting preceding, it can be taken with a high level of certainty and confidence that George Bushong was Andrew's father.
The proof that Andrew's father is George:
DNA testing - Three different descendants of Andrew's match Bushong.
1810 Census, He is the correct age in George's household.
1820 Census, he is two pages away from George.
1830 Census, he has the correct number of sons 6 (under 10) Both in Tompkinsville, Monroe, Kentucky
1840 Census, proximity: he is 13 lines from George.
1850 Census, he is 14 pages before George.
Naming patterns: named John after his oldest living uncle; named Andrew after his late grandfather.
Buried in the same cemetery. Andrew and George are buried in Mount Gilead Church of Christ Cemetery, Tompkinsville, Monroe, Kentucky.
Most importantly, the process of elimination - there are no other Bushong parent candidates. Based on charting FindaGrave (2012), the 1930, and 1940 census for all Bushongs in America.
