PETER P. BUSHONG.
The record of Mr. Bushong is that of a man who by his own efforts worked his
way from a modest beginning to a position of eminence and influence in the
section of the country where he now resides. His life has been one of
unceasing industry and perseverance and the systematic and honorable
methods, which he has followed, have won him the unbounded confidence of his
fellow citizens of
Henry County. Mr. Bushong was born in Augusta County, Virginia, on the 4th
of September 1844, and is the son of Jackson and Lydia (Bushong) Bushong,
first cousins. The family to which the subject belongs was originally from
Pennsylvania, but emigrated to the Old Dominion state, where the
father and grandfather of the subject were born. Jackson Bushong was reared
upon a farm
and upon arriving at mature years chose that for his life occupation. He
married Miss Lydia
Bushong in 1834 and in 1848 he decided that wider opportunities awaited him
in the Hoosier state and accordingly moved there. All of his belongings,
worth probably two hundred and fifty dollars, he loaded into a two-horse
wagon and upon his arrival in Henry county bought one hundred and three
acres of land in Fall Creek township. The price of the land was seven
hundred dollars, but he paid one hundred and twenty-five dollars down, going
in debt for the balance. The land was partially cleared and he at once went
to work to cultivate it and pay off the incumbance upon it. This he
accomplished in a few
years and also added to it a forty-acre tract. Later he sold the entire
tract and purchased another tract of one hundred and sixty acres, a part of
which is the farm now owned by the subject. To this tract he added at
different times by purchase, until he owned a total of two hundred and ten
acres. Here he and his wife remained during the balance of their lives, he
dying at the age of eighty-one years and
she at eighty-three. He was a quiet, unassuming man, but possessed the full
confidence of all who knew him. Religiously they were both members of the
Lutheran church, while in politics he was a Democrat. They were the parents
of two children, the subject of this sketch, and Eliza C., deceased,
who was the wife of George H. Dillinger. Peter P. Bushong, at the age of
four years, accompanied his parents upon their migration from the Old
Dominion to Indiana and was afterward reared upon the farm in Fall Creek
Township. He attended the common schools of the neighborhood and received a
fair education. He remained upon the home- farm until 1870, when he decided
to start out in the world
independently. Purchasing a stock of goods, he went into the general
merchandise business, in which he was fairly successful. However this
business was not to his liking and at the end of five years he sold out and
returned to the farm, where he has since resided. He has pursued a policy of
diversified
farming, believing that to be the most practicable plan for the average
farmer, and has been notably successful in his chosen calling. On the 16th
of January 1875, Mr. Bushong was united in marriage with Miss Rosella
McCormick, the daughter of A. D. and Sarah A. (Bates) McCormick. Her parents
were both natives of Virginia, but she was born and reared in the township
in which she now resides.
This union has been a most happy and congenial one and has been blessed by
the birth of the following children: Wilford H., born June 31, 1876, married
Ezza Brown and resides at Anderson, Indiana; Anderson J., born October 28,
1878, married Sada Franklin, and also lives in Anderson; Charles A., born
April 25, 1881, married Miss Neva Swain and is working for his father on the
home farm.
Religiously Mr. and Mrs. Bushong are active and earnest members of the
Christian church at Cadiz and advance in every way possible the interests of
the church. Fraternally Mr. Bushong is a member of the Independent Order of
Odd Fellows, belonging to local lodge No. 327 at Mechanicsburg, and has
passed all the chairs and has also represented his lodge in the grand lodge.
Mrs. Bushong is a Rebekah,
belonging to Lodge No. 88. Mr. Bushong is also a member of Encampment No.
170 at Middletown. He takes keen interest in the general welfare of his
community, as is evident by the fact that he is a stockholder in and
secretary of the College Corners Gas Company. In all that goes to make up
true, honest manhood the subject stands pre-eminent and because of the many
fine qualities he possesses he has won and retains the highest respect and
esteem of the entire community.

Martha Ann Nancy Russell were married on 14 March 1872 in at Elijah Pitcock's home. He died on 16 March 1890, at age 65. He was buried in Martin Cemetery, Sycamore, Ozark County, Missouri.
Jacob's connection to John Andrew Bushong and Ferby W.White is made, based on the following.
His date of birth fits with siblings.
He's named Jacob as is an uncle
He's middle named, Hamilton, after his uncle Thomas Hamilton and aunt Margaret Peggy Bushong Hamilton.
He married a Bryant, probably a sister to George W Bushong's wife, Nancy T Bryant.
He lived in the same county as his father and was about 13 households away from George Bushong and Nancy Bryant in the 1850 Census
Named a child Newton for middle name, as did at least 2 other siblings.
with this I'm connecting Jacob to John and Ferby Bushong and still looking for more proof.

Rick. As for Ozark County, the patriarch who came from Kentucky was Jacob Hamilton
Bushong in 1870. It is well documented that he came in the caravan with the
Amyxes and Morrisons. Jacob was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky, on
December 17, 1824 and died in Ozark County, Mo., on March 16, 1890 and is
buried in the Martin Cemetery here (I also live in Ozark County.)
Jacob's first wife was Sarah West Bryant (b. May 26, 1823 in Kentucky) who
came with him and then died in 1871 and is buried next to him. On March 14,
1872, Jacob married Martha Pitcock, and she died just two short weeks after
Jacob and is also buried with him, on the other side, in the Martin
Cemetery.
Jacob went by "Hamp" and the story goes that he knew he'd have to be taken
by boat across Bryant Creek for his burial at the Martin, but he insisted on
it. In March that might have been very tricky, but it worked out.
here's another story about the Martin Cemetery...
The cemetery served as a burial ground for several other families,
besides the Martins. Burials made from the Sycamore community, across
the Bryant sometimes involved using a boat to transport the corpse,
especially in times of high water.
This was true of one burial in June, 1871, when J. H. Bushong was
buried there. The Bryant was out of its banks and it took three boats
to guide the one carrying his body across the riffles to the cemetery,
recalls Tan Martin.

DIED
Jacob H. Bushong was born in Monroe county, Kentucky, 14th December 1824,
and lived in that county until he moved to Missouri and after that time he
was a citizen of Ozark county, until the 16th March 1890, he was suddenly
called from this life to that toward which is vouchesied to all who by
"Patient continuing is well doing seek for glory, honor and immortality." The
deceased was a faithful Christian. He was baptised in his 18th year by Newton
Mulky in his native county, and ever after lived consistently with the
profession he had made. He was a good citizen of our county. He was kind to the
poor and always ready to aid those in need; a good neighbor, a loving
husband and father in his family. He was laid to rest on the 18th; funeral
services were conducted by Elder Paul Patrick. Mr. Bushong leaves not only his
family and relatives to mourn his departure, but all who knew him
sympathize with the bereaved ones. Jacob Hamilton Bushong and 3 of his brothers and 5 Amyx family members left
Kentucky in the spring of 1870 with Captain Kimmons Amyx leading the wagon
train and arrived in Missouri in November 1870 at Hartville, Missouri, 40
miles east of Springfield. They rested and discussed where they should
settle. The Bushongs wanted to settle in Hutton Valley near West Plains and the
Amyx wanted to go near Gainesville. Captain Amyx made the decision to go
to Gainesville so they all followed him and moved on arriving 10 miles
northeast of Gainesville on the 23 November 1870 where they settled in what is
still called the Bushong/Amyx Campground. Jacob Hamilton Bushong's wife
Susan died 29 June 1871, about 7 months after arriving from Kentucky and was
buried in Martin Cemetery. He then married in 1872 to Martha A. N.
Pitcock. They both died in 1890 in Ozark County, Missouri and all of them are
buried near each other in the same cemetery, Martin Cemetery.
